Ahh.. So mad at myself!

Recommended Posts

Went for a fill yesterday and did fluro.... My esophagus just above my band is stretched a little!!! They say it's fixable because it's not too bad right now... I'm so angry at myself for letting this happen.... They said either laying down after eating, not chewing well enough or overeating is what's caused it! I need to fix this... Any ideas or suggestions??? True results isn't very helpful, they just tell me what wrong but don't really offer suggestions. Help!!! Please!! I'm new to this only 9 months post op so yes I have a lot to learn, so please don't be so harsh and negative on me, we all make mistakes! I can say I'm guilty of laying down after eating, so that I will change. I don't think I overeat, I don't eat to the point that I feel awful, do I need to start measuring my food? ?

I have measured my food whenever possible since I was banded 21 months ago. For me, it's the only way I can be 100% certain I'm not accidentally over eating. So, yes, if I were you I'd start measuring your food.< /p>

Here's a great article that explains the band, what to expect and what is necessary. I think it'll help you a lot: http://drsimpson.net/fills/Lap-band-eating/lap-band-not-restriction/lap-band-and-restriction.html

Btw, it seems I see a lot of stories like yours from others who've been to True Results. It's very disheartening, but it sounds like they just herd you through like cattle with very little direction or education. I've also heard from many how they never see the surgeon after surgery- only the PA for fills. It's quite sad because you deserve far better and more thorough treatment. (again, just my observation based on what I see here)

Thank you very much! Yes I agree with that about true results however I still see my surgeon every month but he's not the one that gives me my fills. I will see my surgeon on the 4th. I did call and leave him a message today about my concern so I'm hoping he'll call me tomorrow.

If you haven't measured your food before, I would recommend you do so to get a real idea of what 1 cup looks like. If you are going off of feel alone, overeating can easily be accomplished. Don't need to do this forever as you will soon learn how to eyeball measurements. But it's always a good habit to start w/.

As for not chewing enough, precutting as much as possible, avoiding things that encourage large bites (ie sandwiches) etc may be a good start until you have reinforced your habits. Even when I'm brazen enough to eat something like a pizza I use a fork and knife because it is near impossible to bite small bites off at a time.

Hope this helps

Thank you, I just bought some portion bowels that have 1 cup measurements on them and I'll start using those to help me. I hope that I can reverse this little stretching that I have. I have put myself of a liquid/mushy diet until I see my surgeon on the 4th or he returns my call. It doesn't seem like a good idea to put full solids on a stretched esophagus, but idk.

I'm sorry to hear your experience with True Results hasn't been great. I went through them here in Austin and they are amazing!! If anything, I feel over-educated compared to most and I have everyone's contact info, phone numbers, emails, everything if I have any questions or need help! They're so responsive and send me folders full of info anytime I have a question. I'd call and tell them you need help and demand some answers.

Thank y'all! Loved the article! Great read! I talked to my surgeon and he is confident that it'll fix itself in about 3 weeks if I follow all the rules he gave me today, I feel much better! I'll have a follow up X-ray in a few weeks to check it out again!

Hi Mandy, that's great news! (And I love that article, too, Missy.) Think I'll go read it again! Best wishes to you........keep us posted on your progress. What is your protocol over the next few weeks? I am getting banded Tuesday then Clear Liquids one day only (!?!) and on to full liquids for a week, then full liquids plus smooth foods then mushies.

I'm to only eat 2-3 times a day no Snacks. Those meals will only consist of 7oz's of food. Nothing too heavy, no Pasta, no rice, no red meat. I can have as many Protein shakes as I need to help with hunger. It should shrink back up in a few weeks. I have to chew chew chew and use a timer to time exactly one minute between each baby bite. So tonight I had tuna, and used a timer. I don't feel hungry and it took like 20 mins to finish the tuna!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
