Lap band slipped and gaining like a pig!

Recommended Posts

Had an infill 6 weeks ago due to a band slip. I go tomorrow to see if it moved back. I pray it did because I have been out of control! I don't know what's the matter with me! All I keep saying is wow I haven't been able to eat that in 6 years... Yeah so now I'm up 20 lbs in 6 weeks! I am beyond discussed with myself! I can only hope tomorrow shows it went back and they can start filling me again... ????

Unfortunately, we're never really cured of our eating obsession. Sucks, actually.

My question is..... What is it that you've eaten in the last 6 weeks, that you couldn't allow yourself with a filled band?

Bagels, full bowls of Pasta, whole sandwiches, big bites, large portions. I have just been OUT OF CONTROL! I am so embarrassed by the way I have been eating the last 6 weeks. I eat all day long, not because I'm hungry because I can...

When I lost the Fluid in my band what I experienced was that gradually I increased the amount I was eating , not intentionally but gradual unaware building.

Hi Ann, I hope it goes well tomorrow and you are able to get back on track. I am just back from a therapy appointment. Still pre-band (one more week!) but have been seeing a therapist while going through this process. Trying to sort out those issues of what food has meant for me, the overeating, feeling like my body betrayed me at some point (the initial big gain and subsequent failed attempts to lose weight), etc. I am a stress-eater (who isn't?!) and use food to tamp down anxiety. You must be anxious about your band right now. Things will be so much better when you know what's going on with this and the fact that you are coming here and checking in means you are aware. That is important, don't you think -- the awareness of what we are doing. Just know you're not alone -- please don't feel embarrassed or disgusted with yourself. We've all been there and we're all here now. Keep us posted!

Hi Ann,

I can understand where you are coming from. This last weekend I was at an after funeral "party" for lack of a better word there. It was a big affair, akin to some weddings.

There was food galore, and as each new plate came to the table I thought I really can't wait to dig into that! Then I took a bite, and that was enough. The band would not allow me to eat all that my eyes saw, and my mind wanted to eat.

I was sad, I was stressed, I was overwhelmed by the last couple of weeks and I really wanted to stress eat! The band would not allow that. I was grateful and resentful at that same time. Grateful because I know it's the right thing for my body and my health and resentful because I was floundering and lost!

What would I use to sooth my shattered emotions? I couldn't use the food, so I turned to the people at my table and my husband and we talked and shared and laughed and cried and it worked but I miss that old coping strategy, and let me tell you the food was to die for...even just the one or two bites I was able to eat of each thing so I understand how you feel.

Try not to beat yourself up, and after this slip...when your back on the bandwagon try to explore some other coping strategies to turn to when you need them vs. the food. I'm still working on that because I know if that band wasn't there the other day I would have ate myself under the table.

I've been experimenting with chewing gum..though some don't appreciate the bubble popping as much as I do :)

This scares me. Part of me feels like I've come so far, that it will be a cold day in hell before I allow myself to gain weight.....AGAIN! But as strong as I feel, I'm not sure that I could control it any better now, than I did pre-band. That's why I say all the time in the threads, that we're never really cured.

I'm with the other posters.......don't beat yourself up. You exposed yourself by posting here this morning (which, depending who is reading it......has its own risks-lol), but I really think that if everyone is painfully honest with themselves, we're all vulnerable to old behavior. It's never gone......only in some sort of remission.

Hang in there..... My heart goes out to you. I know all too well, the feeling of being pulled in two different directions; the compulsion to eat, against the fear of gaining. Let us know how it goes after your appointment.

Recovery from food addiction is basically the same as other forms of addiction.

Awareness is the first crucial step, and you are aware of what has happened to cause your weight gain.

I am aware of how drastically my eating habits and patterns have changed over the past months. And I am a self confessed carboholic.

Yes, every day we do have the opportunity to re-commit to doing the best we can to get back on track. I feel it is important to understand the reasons we allow ourselves to engage in behaviors to sabotage our efforts to remain compliant with eating.

My band has been empty since June, and everyday it is a constant awareness of staying compliant to remain with good food choices and portion amounts. I have continued to lose weight, but only because of exercise on a regular basis.

You have taken the first crucial step...do your best to take back control of your eating. Self talk helps...ask yourself does the sandwich, Pasta, or whatever allow me to stay compliant and reach my goals? If the answer is "no", then you have a choice to make.

I hope all will be well with your band...

My band has been empty since Friday. I've been able to lose a few lbs but I still have that fear of losing control. I hope you can start getting fills again... You'll lose the 20, don't worry.

I'm in the same situation - banded 08. big slip a couple months ago - up a solid 50lbs. I'm actually only 27lbs from where I started. very sad. I submitted for sleeve conversion and insurance said no. I can eat, eat, and eat more. Its awful. the doc is now submitted for "fixing this band, but what I'm concerned about is - this one slipped what if it happens again... I actually mentioned to my husband I wanted to find out about "Care Credit" and finance the 16k - even though I have bariatric coverage - its BS! And the topper...I paid cash for this band. New insurance from my husband's employer that has paid NOTHING toward my Bariatric coverage.

Aren't the bands they are installing now different from the ones they did a few years ago. New and improved?

I read about all these slips, and it makes me uneasy. I knew from the start that it's an inherent possibility with the band. But I really do hope that the plication dramatically minimizes that possibility. I was told that they rarely see slips with the added plication.

I can't really respond as to whether or not a sleeve revision is a good way to go for you. It's such a personal thing. For me, the thought of having 3/4 of a vital organ removed, freaks me out. We don't know what life has in store for us. Maybe at some point in the future, having only part of a stomach may be an issue? Once it's gone, we can't get it back. That is my fear with the sleeve, and with issues surrounding the RNY.

I agree I won't have the sleeve done. My band was my savior. I went from 358 lbs to 170. BUT then I started making bad choices and over eating to the point of discomfort and here I am now with this slip. Today I have a 230 appt for my second endoscopy to see if it went back. If not I will have to have surgery to have a new band put in place, and yes that is what u will do. If my Buns won't pay I will take a loan. All I know is that for me personally I need a band. I am a foodaholic. I said I would never gain it back and here it comes... :(

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
