Hi! My name is LaToya.

I was in the process of getting the LapBand but my surgeon (Dr.Van Wagner-St.Louis) suggested that the RNY Gastric Bypass will be my best bet. I have been overweight since I was 11 years old and probably even before that. It was very emotional when Dr.Wagner told me that he didn't think I would be 'as' succesful with the LapBand....I really appreciated his honesty.

So now I am going back and researching everything dealing with the RNY.

I am concerned that it is a mal-nutrition process.

But I do have at least 200 pounds to loose.

Can't wait to get to know everyone. Would love to know if anyone else is seeing Dr.Wagner as well!

I had 200 lbs to lose when I got my band 2 1/2 years ago. I wish I had gotten the bypass then, but I was too afraid. I have lost and maintained 100 lbs with the band but I have had problems with the band for almost 2 years. I also realized that I was never going to get to my goal unless I had a malabsorptive aspect because I love to eat and you can get around the restrictiveness of the band with ice creams and chips and other junk foods. I got to the points were I couldn't eat any rice, Pasta, bread, meat, fruit or veggies without it getting stuck and causing me severe pain and vomiting. I feel like when I get the bypass I will be able to eat a better variety of food to keep myself healthy.

Danielle

Hello, I had a gastric bypass over 30yrs ago and getting ready for a gastric bypass revison..But if you take Omega3 and get your Protein you won't be losing your hair or be mal-nurished..This is a chance for you to have a great life..You will cry and you will want the things you ate before, but that want will go away, I found keeping busy helped me..As the years passed and I started gaining weight the last 10yrs I finally went to a Dr. and found out that the way they did the surgery 30yrs ago has had a big change so I'm just getting started and hoping I will be able to get my surgery..I wish you luck....I'm going to Dr Fang...

Hi Latoya! I've posted on a couple other thread of yours as well. If you have any questios - please ask away...

I lost about 65 lbs with the band. The first year was wonderful, but after that it went downhill and I ended up with gerd and esophagus dialition issues, so my new doctor (in fl - I moved) told me he had to take it out. I had convinced myself I wanted the Sleeve but he wouldn't do it nor would insurance approve it.

So I'm now two months post op and doing well. I've had issues lately with drinking within an hour and a half after eating some meals...but am going Wednesday to my doctor to follow up. I think it may be an ulcer, which is a result of the gerd I fought for years with the band. I just started having heartburn issues in the last couple of weeks. So I may be back on meds for that - which is okay...easy fix.

Can't wait to chat with you - and hopefully we can get this forum more active.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
