Do you like dark chocolate? I have bought a bar of high quality Ghiardelli's and eaten it slowly, broken up into pieces, The pieces are fairly big and are approx. 70-80 calories. But chocolate isn't a trigger food for me.

My go to chocolate foods are Oh Yeah Protein bars (just like Snickers!), Starbucks skinny mocha frappacinos (130 calories), Fiber One chocolate chip Cookies (microwave for 20 seconds - yum), EAS carb advantage Protein shakes with added banana, ice and NF dried milk (23 grams protein), or if I need just a bit of chocolate that isn't meal sized, a Hershey Kiss. Sweets did not make me fat, so I can eat just one or two.

I cannot get myself any leeway on salty carbs, though. That's my downfall.

chocolate can still be benefitial as a post op if you manage the consumption of it.

If you can eat chocolate in moderation, you might consider have a small portion of dark chocolate that is 80% cocao or higher once or twice a week. It will satisfy your cravings and also provide you with some additional benefits that come from eating dark pure chocolate.

If you are not so much of a moderation type (me), then you might think about satisfying your chocolate cravings with chocolate flavored Protein powder or perhaps hot chocolate with additional Protein. Find something with a good chocolate flavor that is not going to punish you in term of calories or spike your insulin levels to trigger even more cravings.

I never have really been into chocolate before VSG, but as a post op it is a flavor I have come to enjoy. Every night I make a double chocolate casein Protein shake and it satisfies me as a desert. The casein protein also is such it helps my metabolism keep burning until morning when able to eat again. I really do enjoy the richness of the double chocolate flavor.

I know cravings can be hard. I think the key with dealing with them is to first determine if you are a moderation person or an all or nothing person and then go from there, perhaps implementing one of the suggestions above into your post op plan.

Hope this helps.

I found this recipe earlier today for Protein and Peanut Butter Cookies - I haven't tried them yet, but was planning to make a batch after dinner.

I tried the sugar free Hershey's dark chocolate at Wal-Mart. I thought it tasted really good.

Do you take Calcium? My Doc wanted me to take Citracal twice a day, they make chocolate chews I have one after Breakfast and one after dinner, they taste like a tootsie roll, and satisfies my need for desert. Also, some of the chocolate Protein Shakes aren't bad, and Unjury makes a Protein hot chocolate that is really good and filling.

The reason why we like chocolate is the little bit of phenylethylamine that it contains. This nuerotransmittor releases norepinephrene and dopamine into the blood stream, the "feel good" hormones. Unfortunately, the 1/2 life of phenylethylamine is only 5-10 minutes which means the cravings come back quickly for more chocolate. It is better to find a food that triggers the release of the hormones with a longer 1/2 life. Caffeine in coffee might be a good example because it tends to stay in the body a lot longer before being metabolized. Just something to consider when thinking about the chocolate cravings.

How far out are you from surgery?

After surgery my go to was chocolate fudge sugarfreee pudding. I put in a scoop of chocolate or unflavored powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powder and it packed 16 grams of Protein with about 150 calories. It was my meal sometimes and in the beginning it helped me get in the much needed calories. I still will make the pudding sometimes but don't put in as much Protein Powder. Its a good before bed snack.< /p>

Right now I am drinking a Unjury chocolate splendor Protein Shake with a few drops of the Cherry extract. Tastes like chocolate covered cherries.

My NUT offered this solution, count out chocale chips (yes the baking kind) and eat them slowly...you can work them in daily.

I purchased the unsweetened semi-sweet chocolate. I put it into the unflavored Protein Powder from Unjury and sweeten to my liking. I find some of the shakes too sweet. Th s has a deep rich chocolate flavor with minimal calories. I don't have an addiction to chocolate. I'd be in the cabinets looking for a carb in the past. ;-)

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
