An English Sleever's Journey

Recommended Posts

Nathalie, I am so very very sorry. It is never easy to find those things out - it is particularly painful when you're informed that it has been going on for some time and you are the last to know. (I had a similar thing). May I ask how old your boyfriend is? Do you know what you're going to do now? Stay and fight for it? Go back to Manchester?

If it is any consolation - you found out now. Right before an AMAZING transformation is going to take place in your life. As painful as it is right now, give it 10 months and this will seem like a dim and distant memory and whilst he's inspecting his shoes, realising what a total idiot (I could think of many more choice words to use here, but would probably get banned if I did) he is; you'll be spreading your magnificent wings and truly flying...

You're absolutely right to focus on you and continue to do so. This Jackass doesn't deserve you and is fundamentally a coward. Plain and simple - a coward. If he wasn't happy, he should have had the balls to call it - not, as he appears to have been doing - coveting the attentions of someone else to give him an 'out'. You, on the other hand, are facing your greatest fear which is no mean feat and with such courage. And you WILL conquer it.

Eyes on the prize, baby-girl. Eyes on the prize...

I know this is an awful time for you, but whatever you choose to do, we all want the best for you and will be here whenever you need us.

Hang on in there, honey. Nirvana is just around the corner :) xxx

Thank you so much everybody - it means so much that you took the time to reply (even if it did make me cry!!). You're all so right, this is a whole new start for me now - and now without any ties here me and my new slimmer body will be free to do whatever we want. I have been with him since I was 19 though so we have done a lot of growing up together and I am terrified of being on my own again. I guess it will hurt a little less every day so, like my pre-op diet, I just have to take it one day at a time.

Went to L'Occitane at lunchtime and treated myself to my favourite shower gel and body lotion for at the hospital - I can never justify spending so much on it normally but I decided this was one of those times that was worth it.

Madam Reverie - he is 24. I am up to Manchester tonight anyway for my operation, and was already planning to stay there for a couple of weeks. Further than that I don't know what I'm going to do - my priorities are with getting myself recovered now.

He's 24 and a total knob. Glad you're back on your home turf for the operation. You take all the time you need up there to heal and get things together. Nothing like having your crew around you.

As for he posh shower gel? Hell, you have at it! If that's as bad as it gets, you're going to be just fine! When I split from my ex fiance, I think i blew a cool £1,000 on 'making me feel better' stuff!

Barclaycard, MAC and House of Fraser were very happy, I can tell you! :) x

Thanks Richard! I'm trying to stay positive!! Just got into my room at the hospital. Very nice - although right next to the nurses station so it's very noisy!!

Don't expect to get any sleep whilst you're there. I was under the illusion I'd be doped up and getting some serious naps in. Hell no. Apart from the ambient racket they were creating, they were in and out of my room practically every hour. If i were you? I'd be asking them straight up to leave you alone after the first night. I walked out of hospital shattered... Best of luck for today. I know you'll be legendary and then it all begins. We'll be waiting for you :)xx

Went down for theatre at about 10.20, and was put under at about 10.45.

Woke up in recovery with a really dry mouth, sore throat and what felt like the worst pulled muscles in my stomach! Apparently I had been telling the recovery nurse that I felt sick but I didn't remember it! He sorted me out with a little sip of Water, painkillers and anti-emetics and then I snoozed on and off until I got back to my room.

Since then, once again I have basically just nodded on and off. I am struggling with nausea more than pain ( I am just on paracetamol now ) and my oxygen levels and blood pressure is quite low.

My surgeon has just been in to see me (and woken me in the process!) and said everything went very well.

Hoping by tomorrow I will feel a little better - I hate feeling sick!!

Ask them for morphine. It'll ease the sickness and allow you to relax a bit... Glad it went well though and you're up, awake and fighting the temporary misery. Give it three days and this will be a vague blur. Well done, honey xx

I'm super sensitive to morphine and that makes me more sick than anything (as I once found out to my detriment on the platform at Bermondsey tube station! Eek!), so although I had some of that yesterday I am trying to avoid it for now.

Had a few hours unbroken sleep and I don't feel too bad at the moment. I have had no pain relief since about 6pm yesterday so I am really surprised how little I am hurting. Just feel like I've done a really intense abs class at the gym!

Not being able to drink much Water (it's just knocking me sick) so I have had two saline drips - although I keep needing to wee and feel guilty every time I call a nurse to unhook me from my various bits of equipment!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
