November buddies where are you?

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 3 of my two week pre-op diet and it's so tough!! It's not liquid only - but it's super low carb, super high Protein. I went to the grocery store to get some things for my husband and son - boy was THAT a mistake. Never have I felt so tempted!! But I've been doing REALLY well and sticking to the diet. I'm only down a few pounds since the first day of the diet. They said that if, on surgery day, you "maintain or gain weight", the surgery is cancelled. So that's been a huge incentive right there!

But I will admit to sniffing the cheesebread sticks from pizza hut my husband got.

Just a sniff!

I'm getting sleeved Nov 21 in Grand Rapids, MI. Anyone else a GHP patient here?

Hi Kelly!

I'm going to GHP, too! My surgery date is Tuesday 11.12.13. I just had my last pre-op checkup with the PA and I have lost 10 pounds on the pre-op diet and that was earlier this week. I've lost a total of 14 since I started the pre-op on 10.29.13.

I'm getting nervous and, honestly, can't really believe I am going to do this on Tuesday. I have Dr. Foote. Which surgeon do you have?

I understand about the food. I've been tempted, too. But, I will say, GHP has done a good job of having a variety on the pre-op diet. The dinners are actually good. The Soup is my least favorite. The omelets are better than the oatmeal. I bought my post-op liquids this week. Hopefully I will feel like drinking them after being sleeved!

Good luck on your journey. You will do great. I'll keep you in my prayers and you do the same.

~Susan.

I'm in Orange County and I'm getting sleeved on the 18th. All liquid 2 week diet and I'm really hating the Bariatric Advantage shakes! My nut doesn't like generic Protein Drinks because they are not "meal replacements".

Glad to hear your surgery is a success!

Hi Bob, what surgeon/ hospital? I'm in OC too and was sleeved 11/4 by Dr Leport at Orange Coast. I existed on the OH YEAH chocolate milkshake Protein Powder. I didn't like the New Directions Proteins the office sells, but you might try those. I found the absolute essential part of surviving that pre op nightmare was finding a protein that I actually looked forward to having. Anyway, I hope you find one you like and hang in there. LMK if you have any questions or want to talk.

Surgery was Thursday the 7th. It's been a rough go so far. Hoping today will be much better. I'm fighting dehydration and I'm looking at going back to ER today for fluids. I hope everyone else is doing great! I'm not regretting anything just gotta push through the rough spots and get to the other side! On a positive note I'm down right at 10 pounds in 3 days :)

Hi Susan!

I completely agree on your take of the foods: the soup is gross, the oatmeal is okay but it's got that real obvious "artificial sweetener" taste which I can't stand. Also, artificial sweeteners give me Migraines, so I stay away from them at all cost. So I haven't had any sugar free popsicles, drinks, pop, etc. It's been strictly Water and the food.

My surgeon is Dr. Kemmeter and I really like him. But I've also heard GREAT things about Dr. Foote so I know you're in good hands, too!

My last pre-op check up with the PA is on 11.13 - you will already be sleeved by then! I will definitely keep you in my thoughts this coming week and hope for a speedy and easy recovery for us both!

Kelly

Hi Amanda,

My surgeon is Dr Johnsrud at St.Joseph in Orange. He's a cool guy. I actually know several people who got gastric bypass with Dr, Laport and swear by him. :) Thanks for the OH YEAH tip, where do you find those?

Hi everyone!! I am new to the site and was sleeved on 11/4. I am down 11lbs and feeling pretty good. I still have some small cramping pains and difficulty sleeping at night, but overall can't complain. My Dr still has me on a clear liquid diet for the 1st week and Monday I go for a 1 week post-op check up and will advance to a full liquid diet, so looking forward to that! I like reading everyone's posts, as it makes me feel like I'm not alone. I had my surgery in Minnesota, at Park Nicolette, they have a fabulous team to work with. Very excited for my new beginnings. Look forward reading your posts and chatting with everyone!!

Me too, Sooner, have lost about 9 lbs since surgery a week ago. My tummy is hungry frequently, but is easily satisfied. I'm getting the hang of it! Can't wait to be able to put some more substantial food in there! I'm looking forward to some mashed potatoes! That sounds so good!!! What are you going to eat first when you can go to purees? I am really craving meat, also! I am so happy I did this!!!!!!

Sometimes i think i get hunger and gas pains confused. Believe me I cant wait either. But i have no idea what i want to eat. Im getting use to it too. It really is a all day thing. I go back to work tomorrow, so we will see how that goes. Its very light duty so i think i will be ok. When do you have your next appt with your surgeon?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
