Struggling...4 days post-op

Recommended Posts

I am definitely struggling with "head hunger" and true hunger today. I'm on clears until Tuesday, and I think I'd feel better if I was able to have something with any significant calories. I'm weak, exhausted, and can't stop thinking about food. I'm worried about how I will handle my two young sons on Monday (my first day on my own again). Are these emotions normal? I'm very edgy and emotional right now, and would give anything for a little bit of milk, Protein Shake, or Soup (not broth!!).

It's an "alone" feeling right now. I don't know anyone I can talk to about these emotions, so I'm hoping someone here has been through this! Thanks for reading this whining. I am irritated with myself! :)

That's ok, girl. I was irritated at everyone else for being able to eat "real food" while I drank broth. Blessedly I was only on clears until Thursday (was that *really* only yesterday??) Tomorrow will be better, each day will get better. You are totally right where you are supposed to be after major surgery. hello??? you just had 85% of your stomach cut out! You are sorta allowed to feel less than perky.

It's OK to feel funky and have crazzzzy emotions... And it is hard, especially with taking care of kiddies... And now the real struggle begins. It's the battle with your head... Fight it, girl...

You are not whining, so don't beat yourself up. And you're not alone, we are all here listening and sympathising. Many of us have been where you are...

Day 4 post op and I cried all day. Hormones all over the place, tired because I wasn't getting enough food or Water in and experiencing buyers remorse - what the hell had I done to myself???

Woke up on day 5 feeling more rested and just generally better and the corner was turned. Who knows why but you have just been through a major surgery so strange things happen. It's an emotional time - but all of this will pass, you will start to feel better, healthier and you will lose weight. Keeping up with your kids will get easier :-))))

So chin up, it's very early days, focus on doing what you can with your liquids and remember - u r most definitely not alone! Good luck, keep us updated....

Try some juice....Vegetable juice.....skim milk if you can stand it.....flavored Water as well. I ate Jello too when I was on liquids.....Try that only a bit though....some debate whether it is liquid or solid..i decided it was liquid.....lol

G2 Gatorade as well so that you don't get dehydrated K.....I mix mine half and half with water.....

My daughter made me so much broth when I came out of the hospital and I only drank it a couple of times..The thought of it makes me sick, same with Protein drinks....But you still need them to help you heal.....

Don't forget your body just went through trauma and it will take a while for you to feel better and heal....give yourself a break!

Clear Liquids til Tuesday...bummer! Have you tried adding unflavored Protein powder to your clear broth? Or buying Protein drinks that are clear? It would definitely help with the hunger. Good luck with it.

Hang in there. I was sleeved this past Monday, and I can definitely relate w/ where you are. Try some juice... it really perked me up and gave me some calories. You've come a long way, and I know you can handle this. Just pull through.

I'm 8 days out and I still haven't felt hungry. The first week staying hydrated is the most important thing to do. Apple juice and Mango Italian Ice were my favorites.

Kimmy1813, I promise u it will pass, life will get better... I felt exactly the way u r describing but from that low point, I started heading back up. Am almost 4 months out and wouldn't change a minute of what I've gone through. No regrets - but once u get through the first two weeks, it does get better :-)))))

Oh honey, you're not alone as I'm a hot mess!!! I was sleeved on July 29 & my dr only allows liquids for THREE WEEKS. 21 days. My stomach actually growls like it did before... I imagine myself diving into a bowl of Pasta at Olive Garden... Anyway, I think are thoughts are normal. Good luck :)

I'm right there with you.....the gatorade G2 helped me today when I was light headed.....also boullion (a bit on the salty side rather than broth, but I think it helped.

Jello and jigglers (both SF) helped

I was having spasms, so the ice pops and anything cold was a no no for me, I'm a little leary to try them again...I dilute and drink warm: Isopure clear (protein), sf apple juice, and crystal light....easier to get down......

Good luck.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
