Good DVD workout for beginners?

Recommended Posts

Any recommendations for a good beginners workout video? I have one of the dvds from the shapley girl series, but its boring, and too easy. I looked at the Extreme weight loss or biggest loser ones, but I am afraid they will be too hard. I need something for just starting out with a high BMI. Any suggestions?

I would suggest the Power90 series. NOT the P90X, the Power90. Same guy, different workouts. It's basically the equivalent of a gym workout with a trainer. Very good starting point.

I agree with kalee. Walk away the pounds has DVDs with several different distances to choose from and you can use 2 pound weights to help with your arms while you walk and to increase effort. She also has 'jogging' videos.

I concur w the two posters about walk away the lbs. I've been doing Leslie sansones watp DVD since 2005. No matter my weight, nd even after knee surgeries, ive done her DVDs and they r amazn. And u can work up a sweat depending on which miles u choose, or keep it low impact. If u try just one, u won't b sry, ull get the others:). Just google her name and ull c all that she offers, the walking is measured in miles. U can even find some at Walmart. Gr8 product in my opinion.

Actually, the biggest loser ones are really great and the trainers certainly know their stuff. I do not use them anymore, but they were very helpful a few years back when losing some weight on a "diet." They are usually really cheap at Walmart or even TJ max. Who knew TJ max would carry these? Give them a try. Now you just have to decide on which trainer you like ( bob or Jillian) and which flavor of workout you like. The basic biggest loser workouts are a good place to start and are designed for beginners. You can branch off into other, perhaps harder, stuff when the time is right like biggest loser strength training, shred, cardio, yoga, kick boxing, etc. when you are ready for some real intense DVD options, i have a few suggestions. ;) Good luck!

Goochman...you are my hero! Even in great shape Power 90 kicked my butt. Tony is awesome and he will get you in shape for real!

Have you tried Slim in 6. Also made by the same company that does Power 90, but it is a bit more toned down than the Power 90, PX90 ones. I find the workout challenging and also varied enough that as soon as you think you can't take it, she switches up on you.

Also, if you like more of a short but tough workout you can try T-Tap or Bar Method. T-Tap got to be boring for me but it was a real workout. Bar Method still kicks my butt!

I was gonna say walk away the pounds. I think she calls it walk at home now actually. I've been doing this off and on for a few years at different weights. It's still challenging and you can add weights and also jog when they walk etc.

I didn't know she had jogging knes! What are they called.

I just took this pic today of the ones I have.

Hey - if we are suggesting walking DVDs, why not just go for walks outside. :) It is much more refreshing, plus you can take your dog if you have one. Walking is great! I spent the first 2 months walking 3-4 miles a day. It was great! My dog loved all the walking. I made it interesting after a month by walking up hills or picking up the pace. I then graduated onto my ellyptical at month 3, running at month 5 and cross fit at month 7 until today.

Fiddle it's more than just a basic walk though. ;) I know- sounds super easy bit it's actually harder than ya think. I just broke a sweat and a half doing three miles w Leslie. I'd have to jog to burn as many calories as I did in 45 minutes vs. walking.

Plus it's rain or shine! :D

I have a huge collection of Leslie Sansone videos. She incorporates even light jogging into some of them, and has tons of videos with walk boosters(stretchie bands, walk belt, weights, etc). LOVE her and her positivity!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
