Anyone noticing changes in food taste? (I'm post op 4 1/2 weeks)

Recommended Posts

Just a curious question.

I'm almost 5 weeks out and I've been real comfortable with the liquid Protein Drinks and Greek yogurts ...

I slowly added dinner meals into the mix (i.e. eggs, Soups and cottage cheese) ...

I've gone out with friends a couple times and have noticed that some of the good ole foods don't seem to taste the same ... I'm not sure if it's more of a physical or mental response. I've really tried to work on my mental hunger for food over the last month and just checking to see if anyone else is experiencing the same changes?

Last night for example. Had dinner with some friends and had a mini burger. It was good, but not as good as I recall. Same issue last week when I tried some sashimi ... I used to be almost unstoppable when I would get in front of a plate of these items. I was able to eat a small portion (as planned) ... but the taste just didn't seem as good as it used to be.

Again ... just wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing this. I'm still very glad I did this. I'm almost 5 weeks post-op and including the pre-op diet, I'm down 46lbs ... so can't complain ...

Yes!!! I used to love scrambled eggs now they are just gross to me. Not sure if it's a texture thing or what! I am 6 months post op and I can try anything at this point. I have tried a few of my old "comfort foods" you know the ones you turn to when you need to feel better?1 Well so far I have been truly disappointed, they did not taste as good as I remembered or give me that "comfort" I was looking for. Which tells me the "comfort" part I got from the food was all in my head to begin with ^_^

That is so funny..I used to hate eggs..the smell even made me sick. Now I love them! Everything tastes so different to me. I have noticed the texture of food a lot more now. Like I love the taste of bananas but the texture now is hard to deal with. The sleeve is a funny thing...but AWESOME! ;)

My tastes have changes significantly. I no longer like sweet things too much. And now, the spicier the better. I used to like mildly spicy things, but now BRING ON THE SPICE! I read about a study where they performed sleeve surgery on rats, and the rats naturally chose higher Protein, lower carb foods when given the option after surgery.

Yes 100%. I even have problems with dairy which for my entire LIFE was okay for me. I used to hate eggs, now I love egg whites. I was a sweets person (helped me gain all the weight)...I literally have no desire for it, even with a piece of cake in front of me at an event, I don't even want to taste it.

I do miss dairy and wish that hadn't happend to me, but other than that, I simply am not minding the adversion to sweets.

I am only 5 days out from my surgery and have noticed that I don't like anything sweet anymore. I was a sugar addict before the surgery. It makes my options extremely limited for the 2 week full liquid diet I'm on but just the thought of Jello or popsicles turn my stomach now.

Same here. Loved eggs pre-op. now I can't get em down. They hurt my stomach and make me feel sick. Still taste good tho :(. And also now love spicy foods.

I love eggs, and am glad I do because we have chickens in our yard. I can only eat 1 at a time now though.

I used to be an ice creamaholic and now I don't care for it. I use to eat a ton of eggs, but don't have a big desire for them anymore either.

I'm beginning to wonder if the post-op diet forced our taste buds to go cold turkey from all the processed foods. It may be that the taste bud detox is the reason behind our new food likes and dislikes. :-)

I loved crystal light, now I can't drink it. I've been sucking down cold Water. I could drink room temp before but now only ice cold works for me.

Nothing taste the same to me. It has been very disappointing trying some of the foods I loved before May 24, 2013. I work for an internal medicine physician and he as no idea why the taste change....makes no sense. Some people on here say after time their taste returned to normal and some haven't. It's jut strange. Wish someone had an answer.

Definitely. Greasy restaurant food disgusts me now. Maybe it's because we are chewing more and actually tasting the food, rather than just inhaling it like before? That's what I figure.

I went out with a friend and we shared a couple appetizers and I was disgusted by the deep fried stuff.

The best dinner out I've had since surgery was at a higher end restaurant and it was a chicken breast with a balsamic sauce and mushrooms. With roasted potatoes. It was so damn delicious. And I had more than enough for lunch the next day!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
