I had my first nutritionist appointment today and she gave me samples of Bariatric Advantage Protein Shakes. I had the strawberry one, and I thought it tasted gross. Does anyone have other suggestions for the Protein powders/shakes? Only because I don't know if I can drink one of those a day and then twice a day three weeks before surgery. Luckily, my pre-op diet allows me to still eat certain foods and drink 2-3 protein shakes a day. But I don't know if I can stomach the shakes. Help!

I hate all of them except for Premier Protein & you can find them at costco, Sam's & Walmart. Not sure where else. Good luck.

I realize that all the Protein Shakes seem to bother my stomach and make me run to the bathroom. I have been having all different Soup broths and I put a Protein shot in so you cant taste it. You can get them at Walmart. . It's small but has a lot of protein 26 grams.

I am four days post-op and have found that I enjoy Pure Protein, Frosty chocolate (it can be purchased at Trader Joe's or at Wal-Mart). Best of luck to you!

i have the GNC lean shake - it is 25 grams of Protein and about 14 oz. the dutch chocolate is very good. i know they are running a special now, but one get the other half off. And also the Atkins and ADvantage are very good as well. You can get the advantage at BJ's for alot cheaper than CVS.

Consider yourself lucky for being able to sample it. I stupidly bought a gallon size jar of it and another of some other fruit flavor. Yuck!

I fight back and forth between different brands of chocolate. I actually hate them all and its a daily struggle for me. I hope you can find one you like.

The best on I have ever tasted was Premier Protein chocolate. 30 grams of Protein, 2 grams of carbs a nd 1 gram sugar. I get mine at Sams for around $16. Taste so good!!!

Go down to your local Vitamin shoppe & get sone Syntrax nectar single serve packets. They're 1.99 or so each & you mix w/ Water for fruity flavors & milk for desert flavors like vanilla or oreo.

I stand by the Roadside Lemonade. Its my go to flavor. I mix in mio or Torani sugar free or use iced tea instead of h2o. I looove it.

Also u can buy on Amazon.com, bj's bariatrics etc.

The Syntrax website has a sampler pack dirt cheap but u need to call to get one & its assorted.

Bj's will let u choose.

I like the indiv. Packets & bought a tub & a few packets to keep in car/ purse/ desk for emergencys.

Also, in the baby section of your local supermarket/ walmart/ target they have formula holders that have 3 to 4 compartments in them which are great. They're easy to pack & have a no mess pour spout.

Oh and final hint. Put the Water in cup first then Protein powder. Stir w/ spoon or Blender Bottle.

Dont use actual blender as too much bubbles/foam.

Also never leave a 1/2 drunk shake in your car. Pour it out or take it inside as it will smell like the death of 1,000!

allons-y

After doing some research, I ordered an unflavored whey Protein product online.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014KYXN0/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I hope to use this to add to smoothies or drinks to meet my daily Protein requirements. I am leery of those products with artificial flavors or sweeteners. I know "unflavored" doesn't mean "tasteless", but the reviews on this product were pretty good.

I like Nectars too. just got my 2nd tub yesterday. vanilla Bean Torte. Tastes like a vanilla milkshake. Already have Cappucino (even yummier). I also bought the 12 pk sampler from BJBariatrics.com for like $16.00. But I order the tubs from Amazon cuz I get free shipping.

4 yrs ago when I was banded, I invested a small fortune in GNC.com (Lean shakes and Isopure). hated it all. Thats was before I found out that gnc.com has a taste guarantee (they'll refund your $ if you don't like what u ordered). So I stuck to whatever was cheapest at Walmart at the time (can't remember the brand). It was ok, nothing special. Luv Syntrax Nectar!

So I emailed my nutritionist about the Syntrax and she said that the syntrax doesn't have enough Protein for a shake/meal replacement. She would prefer I use one off of the list she gave me (which sucks because I can't find sampling sizes for most of them). But she said the syntrax is good for adding to greek yogurt and stuff for extra protein. She said she'll give me some samples when I have my next appointment. Sigh.

I bought dutch chocolate Isopure. It was the only one I could stomach. The rest smelled bad and tasted bad.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
