Dating question from a girl

Recommended Posts

Hey guys - sorry to just barge into the Men's Room but I'm looking for some advice.

I'm back on the dating scene after almost a decade's absence. My absence was due to dating the wrong person & being depressed & somewhat of a man-hater after that, my parents' divorce (how can you trust "true love" if your parents just fell out of it?), my step-father cheating on my mom (how can you trust men?), having a former boyfriend cheat (again, how can you trust men?), etc. Needless to say, I was not very interested in trying to trust myself or any man, for quite some time. Now that I have lost over 75 lbs I am happily back to getting attention from men. I'm on Match & it's been quite an interesting journey so far.

Anyway, my question is: how do I delicately explain my absence from dating for almost a decade when it was due to trust issues & obesity? And when is the right time to bring up being a former heavyweight without the guy worrying that I will return to my former title weight? Do I quickly follow up my former overweight status by stating there shouldn't be a concern that I'll go back to that because I've had surgery?

Ok, sorry, that was more than one question - but they all really only require one answer ;-)

OK, I'll quietly sneak back out of the Men's Room & hope no one notices I was in here.

Thanks all!

Susan

You were too busy to date (work, philanthropic persuits, etc.) Why bring up the rest?

The right time is once you figure out the guy is a keeper. Up until that point, is it really his business?

Why hasn't such a lovely lady been dating?

I've been busy.

Later you can go into details, but often we guys can handle the abbridged version as a start...

Awesome, guys!!! Thanks so much. Your answers seem so straightforward. I guess I was over thinking it all.

Straightforward and less talky talky is the way we like it usually. :-)

how do I explain my absence from dating????

Susan

not sure i understand why any new guy you meet would ask about your dating past after just meeting you, or shortly after???

as Art saiad - you can just say you've been concentrating on work

you can say you've dated here and there a bit - just haven't found that "special" person yet

if the guy you meet does turn into that special guy,

and you want to talk about your past histoy

the words will come to you about your history - if the guy cares about you, he will only be more proud of you and amazed by your success

if for some reason he (or anyone else) all of a sudden feels funny - for some reason not liking your past??

he's no one to care about

IMO - i wouldn't bring up your valid "trust" issues immediately to any guy

maybe after you know him longer

you don't/shouldn't in my opinion "spill your guts" about your past to ANYONE your barely know

a little mystery here and there is good ;)

many/most new guys will see how great you are - too bad they didn't realize that decade ago (they should have)

have fun

enjoy life

good luck

kathy

Lovely, lovely response, Kathy. You are so right.

For some reason I have started being very open & honest with everyone since i started this weight loss surgery journey & I have lost my creative thinking when it comes to face to face interaction. Thank you for helping me to see "outside the box."

I needed help with this & every one of you have provided me with good insight & responses. I knew this was the place to come!! My VST peeps are awesome.

Thanks again!!

Susan

I agree with others, doesn't really need to be explained. I know I am not going to ask a potential date how her dating life has been. If it comes up, just say you had other priorities.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
