Now I know the answer to my following question, however I just want some personal experience answers LOL! I am dyyyinngggggg to just have ONE sip of a pop! I know I shouldn't and they say not to. But one sip? I can control myself - I just don't want to have pain. Comments???

Also- straws.... I know they said not to. But for how long? Not that I'm totally concerned not using a straw; makes no difference to me really. Just curious. :D

I'm using straws now and I'm 5 weeks post op. I was told I can have soda in moderation at 3 months but if your a soda addict id suggest not to. I usually (preop) would have soda like 2x per month

The fact that you're "dyyyunngggggg" to have one sip is an indication to me that it's probably a trigger for you that should be avoided right? I was never told not to use a straw and have been using them since surgery so I don't know anything about that one.

I was told not to use straws to, but sometimes I forget and use them with no problems. As for soda it won't hurt you as in pain, but if it is a trigger just try to stay away.

True, I think maybe I should wait. I have self control, I really could have one sip but thinking I should wait just because I don't want discomfort.

If you are a soda addict like me dont sip or drink one. It is empty calories and the gas will make your stomach upset. I tried coke and dr pepper. The coke was not bad but the dr pepper was horrible it felt like my stomach was going to pop. So please if you do decide to do this take caution because that dr pepper scared the hell out of me. I decided not to even think about sodas anymore.

My doc says no straws and no soda - unless it is flat...ever. No biggie for me, except every once in awhile a soda sounds like it would be good. Straws...not so worried about. I've "accidentally" used one a couple of times with no problem. The issue is the air from a straw could give you gas. For the soda...the carbonation could cause your sleeve to stretch.

Have a sip if u want.... You won't die.

Btw- I tried a sip of diet coke & it was the worst decision ever. The bubbles were awful and I couldn't get them up. I chewed on gas x and finally got relief. Never again. Not everyone has that experience though. :0)

Soda was allowed by my Dr. at 6 weeks.. but I didn't try any until like maybe 10 weeks... I've had a few sodas here and there and it doesn't feel any difference now than it did before my sleeve.

I've heard the same. Straws allow you to swallow air which causes discomfort & carbonation hurts as well(I'm told) but If you're considering soda I hope it's diet soda. Someone on here suggested getting the soda stream syrups & mixing with Water to avoid the carbonation. If you're drinking diet & eliminating carbonation I don't see how it's any different than drinking Crystal Light. Neither have any nutritional value that I'm aware of. As always, water is best. Good luck!

I was told not to use a straw until 6 months out, same with any kind of carbonation. I tried using a straw after about 4 months and it really really hurt, so I nixed that idea. At 6 months out on the day I had beer at a baseball game, and it was SO painful. It was probably 8 months before I could use either without it hurting. I think its one of those things that you just kinda of slowly try to see how it affects you. Ive never had issues with either thing since......

Hi I was told no carbonated drinks EVER. If I absolutely needed, drink it totally flat. As for straws I was told not to use them now but going for my new habitual drink large Decaf coffee light with skim milk and a sweetner, It comes with a straw and I use it. I try to be careful and not suck down air so far so good. Good luck to you and your soda, I hope you find something that works for you. As I did with my coffee I now drink one caffenated for Breakfast the rest decaf and lots of ice for Fluid.< /p>

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
