Seriously, you can't fix stupid

Recommended Posts

Do you mean I'm not going to lose 30 in 7 days while lying around watching talk shows? This surgery really is a scam. I could lose more with one of the supplements sold at 2:30 in the morning.

Seriously' date=' I gave up soda about a month before surgery haven't look back. With the exception of a sip of a drink I made for my wife, I have been drinking Water exclusively. After my anniversary dinner, I'll be back to Water.< /p>

[/quote']

I already tried the laying around thing and I can say by experience it doesn't work! :D

Soda? I gave it up over a year ago before I even thought about surgery and I don't miss it. Before that, I was at a point of buying a case of diet coke every week! It should not be part of anybody's shopping list!

Laura' date=' on a serious note, I want to thank you for all of the support and counsel you give to the posters on this forum. It is posters like you, fiddleman, antiband and a few others that have made me trade in my food addiction for a forum addiction.[/quote']

Thanks, you know I can relate to everyone on this forum because I am (was) fat and unhealthy because of my lousy eating..

I know what is like to want food, yes even bad food! I understand the person who wants cake or fast food in "moderation" because hey it sounds good in theory! But I know reality is a different animal.

so I chose not to.

It's called pop.

My people, (Iowans), called it sody (sew-dee) pop.

I think saying "you can't fix stupid" is a bit drastic. I understand the sentiment, but for some people, having WLS actually SHOWS them where their problems are. As in, all the psych evals, orientations, and doc visits TALK about what life is like after the sleeve, but TALKING and DOING are two different things. Perhaps, pre-sleeve, some people really DO think that giving up soda, or cutting back on portions, etc, won't be a problem...and then, they find out what they're wanting to eat is way more emotional than physical.

When I frequented band support boards, there'd always be those few who would intentionally NOT go get fills. They found that they didn't like not being able to eat their favorite foods in the quantity they wanted. Or they'd find the "sliders," just like sleevers can do.

So I honestly don't think it's being "stupid"...I think there can be a real difficulty in give up certain comfort foods and coping mechanisms.

Ha! I find that interesting that "banders" would not go get fills so they can eat!!!

I'm sorry but that is kinda stupid :P

So maybe we should say here "you can't fix your sleeve"

Once it's done it's done so you really need to have a concept as to what you are getting into!

I am a pig! I eat to excess I did this knowing that I would have my "free will" taken away. Because I can't be trusted.

I knew there would be days that I would be pissed because I can't eat copious amounts of food. Because I'm FAT and I eat tons of food and nothing stopped me because I'm fat (oh it's a loop :P)

Is this difficult? f**k yes! But if you want the easy way out I can say this surgery is not for you.. Because so much more than just your stomach has to be changed.

I am not stupid - did I do stupid things - yes. Now I know better, and when you know better, you do better. I refuse to beat myself up for the past. I have never eaten because I was hungry - I ate emotionally, and still do. Or I eat because it's there. Believe me, if theres an Edward's frozen pie in the freezer it's mine. Yes, I am a before sleeve. I can understand never cheating, and I hope that I am so terrified of gaining this weight back that I won't cheat. I'm not taking this removal of 85% of my healthy stomach lightly. I am having this surgery in Mexico, and I hope my Dr. is as thorough with post op instruction as the OP's Dr. I wish I could have a Bariatric Bible. I am doing this on my own, but, I have a psychologist, a nutritionist, and support from my immediate family, and this web-site. It took me 10 years to come to this decision, and I will do this for myself - but I will try not to judge others, one thing I learned from al-anon is that you cannot control other people.

Rox.. Just ask for the bariatric "bible" It's not an exclusive thing. Almost everyone will share their drs instructions if they still have it. Mines on my desk top and I don't need to religiously refer to it in order o succeed. You learn what you need to through research and others helping you out. That's what this forum is for

Rox, I was sleeved in Mexico and I received a full post op diet and information package for reference, I also had plenty of face to face time with the doctors for all the questions I had. Additionally, most Mexico surgery packages will include phone visits with a nutritionist. I can't guarantee your experience will be the same, but this was mine.

I asked preop and was told six weeks before soda could be tried. Instructions in my packet also said no soda for six weeks... There are many doctors who do not prohibit soda. Because YOUR seminar so clearly stated that you can never ever ever have soda again, I think it is quite presumptive of you to assume that this is the case for everyone.

I think it is quite narrow minded to say that people who don't follow YOUR doctors instructions or the information that YOU received in YOUR seminar are stupid. We simply didn't have the same doctor that you did.

BTW, I don't "cheat" I log my calories, I exercise AND I enjoy an occasional soda because it's allowed on my plan and it's something I enjoy. No it's not the healthiest thing, but I enjoy it in moderation (maybe once in a week or two) I also enjoy an occasional sugar free Jello.. I don't think it's a healthy option either since they use aspartame, but it's sure tasty when I'm craving something sweet!

I wasn't assuming anything about what other doctors say, but I DID assume that common sense would prevent anyone from even thinking about a sip of coke prior to reaching goal. Seriously......if there isn't any more self control than that, I don't know what will happen when they are not at goal and are at an office party with tempting things.....things that you can have, or at least I do.....once goal is reached and we get our footing on what our new normal is, what we can splurge on once in a while that doesn't trigger over doing.....but a few weeks out, six weeks, two months. I'd have kicked my own @ss if I had done it, of course I didn't drink one coke a week....not even one coke a month, EVER!! Junk was not my problem, portions were. I've always preferred a big ol' steak and loaded baked potato. Med rare, just past the mooing stage. ;) Of course, I still have that now, but rather than a 10 oz steak, I have 3.5 oz and 2 TB of potato, not loaded, only about half loaded. LoL

I guess my point is that for those of us who are allowed soda under our plans, it's no different for us than drinking other sugar free beverages. It's ALLOWED for us during the weight loss phase, we're not looking to "get around" the rules.. these ARE our rules. Common sense certainly does NOT dictate that an occasional diet soda will be my undoing! If soda was a "trigger food" for someone then yeah, it should be avoided at least until they are really ready to do all the mental work required to actually learn moderation with trigger foods, which I believe CAN be done, but it's harder sometimes than just avoiding the food alltogether. But if it's allowed on your plan, it's not a trigger food, and you enjoy a few a month, i really don't see the big deal... I don't see drinking 8 ounces of diet gingerale as any different than drinking 8 ounces of crystal light... both should be regarded as occasional treats, not sources of hydration.

Ntv txn-I gave up soda, coffee, and wine for my sleeve. I track my food but travel a lot for work so I can usually only weight measure portions at home on the weekend. Any tips to under eating your sleeve away from home. I eat until full right now.

Well, us Iowans have an inward sense that we have the superior grasp on just about everything including how to say sody. Folks think we are just about corn and pigs and nothing to do but we bask in our own greatness to occupy our time.

My husband is an IT director, he is always saying his job is 'fighting ignorance, but some times you just can't fix stupid' He says it's ok, it's job security. That is just something we say here at the house, and many times when we are on 635 here in Dallas.....at rush hour! :) I don't agree about the portion thing though, after having 85% of my tummy removed....it is forced Portion Control and one bite too many can result in being in pain. I've never thrown up, but have felt sick a few times. Always after eating out, and we get busy visiting and all of a sudden, the last bite or two just was not good. This is what I needed, forced portion control. I love it, I still have really good restriction and if I'm lucky, if we all are, it will always be like this. Even this far out, I feel like I have the digestive tract of a field mouse!! * fingers and toes are crossed *

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
