I had surgery on 1-31-13. I had 4oz of diet soda young for the first time. It was yummy and I lived to tell the take.

The fact is that carbonation is not going to stretch your sleeve, but we are still told to stay away from it. If you're told you shouldn't have something I think it's ignorant to eat/drink it anyways. Why take the chance? I didn't go through all of this to eat/drink something I was specifically told not to.

I was SPECIFICALLY TOLD that diet soda was fine.

I was specifically told that it was not.

I am/was a Coke Zero "addict" so I know FOR ME that it's best avoided. I stopped cold turkey three weeks ago and I craved one like a sumovabeach yesterday for the first time since cutting it out of my day. I am so glad I didn't give in because I know that would have been a real slippery slope for me, one that I am not willing to risk.

I assumed the OP meant diet so as far as calories, etched hey go crazy. I'm just saying for me I used to live on Pepsi and coke and if I were to start drinking even diet soda, soon it would be regular. That's what mean as far as a slippery slope for me. If OP is talking about regular soda, um I say no way Jose!! Lol!

I definitely agree here.. anything that is a trigger, we should try to stay away from. I didn't have a problem with soda pre-sleeve and mostly just drank Water so having an occasional soda doesn't trigger anything in MY brain. Don't get me wrong.. I have PLENTY of trigger foods that I try to avoid, soda just happens to not be one of them so I see no reason to give it up! There are a lot of people here, not YOU Mrs.G, but there are others, who can't understand that Soda is NOT a big bad trigger food for everyone. Also, there are people here who go on and on about all the chemicals in soda, but yet drink crystal light or eat sf jello!?! If people don't want it for WHATEVER reason that's great, but I do believe that it it's overly demonized.

People are just putting information out there that maybe someone isn't aware of. No need to get defensive about the facts. Chemicals un crystal light and sf Jello doesn't change anything about diet soda which is what this particular thread is about. I'm on my phone so I can't copy the link but for anyone interested, if you Google, "is diet soda better for you" there's a good article by Mark Hyman in the huffington post. I'm not shaking my finger at anyone who wants to drink it, just relaying what I've heard about the subject.

I drink soda... but rarely and MUCH less than I did presleeve. I don't ever tell myself NO any particular food or drink but I do limit my quantity. So far so good. Over a year out and I haven't gained a pound... in fact I'm still losing. Btw I had a half cup of soda today.

It's a rather sensationalized blog post making claims based on a study when the study actually only shows association and nothing causational.

It's really an article against artificial sweeteners. It demonizes soda in particular, but there's nothing special about the artificial sweetener in soda that makes it any different than when the artificial sweetener is used anywhere else... including crystal light, most of our Protein Shakes, or sugar free jell-o.... Actually I use JayRobb Protein Powder because I don't WANT artificial sweeteners every day and the Jay Robb uses Stevia.. I usually will choose just a plain cottage cheese when what I really want to do is mix it with SF Jello and make a mousse with it... I pick and choose when I'm going to consume artificial sweeteners because I personally believe they SHOULD be limited. I just don't single out ONE source of artificial sweetener as being any worse than any other.

Last night I dreamed about having a diet coke. After I drank it, I realized that I shouldn't have it but I felt fine afterwards. LOL Crazy dreams

That's cool, Serendipity. I wasn't trying to start an argument. I've heard the same information from several sources, that was just a quick find that repeated everything I've heard about diet cola specifically. Like I said someone may not know that and have an addiction to it. They may think twice about having another one. Thanks for posting the link!

So for those who have drank soda' date=' how soon after surgery did you start drinking soda?[/quote']

I waited 3 months. But I should mention I buy those mini cans and only drink half. I drink it only 2-3 times a week and use A LOT of ice.

I crave pop. Only because I'm tired of drinking Water, koolaid, and Decaf tea. Pop is bad for you. Especially diet. If consumed continuously, it can eat your kidneys up. I've seen a nephrologist since I was 4. He declares pop as evil but says drink it in moderation, once twice a week. My surgeon said no carbonated beverages either. I have tried any yet. Hopefully I won't but I may have to try an ounce or two of cherry coke zero. I'm definitely not going to be drinking 3-4 bottles a day. Worse comes to worse, try it. It might make you sicker than a dog and you won't have to worry about drinking it anymore.

Well, like a previous poster already said, soda is not going to stretch your stomach. Is it the healthiest of choices, probably not. But, if I quit eating and drinking everything they say is unhealthy, will cause cancer, blah, blah, blah then I probably wouldn't have needed the sleeve because I would be dead from malnutrition. I mean, seriously, you can google just about any food nowadays and find some kind of study saying why you should avoid it. It could drive a person crazy, lol.

I am an "everything in moderation" kind of girl. If I want something, I have it. Denying myself things are what lead me to eventually binge on them. So, instead, I have a normal serving size of what I am craving and then I am perfectly satisfied. But, because this works for me, doesn't mean it will work for you. Just like, just because some people are able to cut everything unhealthy out of their diets doesn't mean that will work for you. You have to figure out what you can and cannot do, you have to find your own personal balance in what you do, what makes you healthy and happy and what works for you. Everyone can offer their advice, insist their way is the only way, etc., but the bottom line is it is your body, your life and your road to map out and follow to get you to your destination.

And for the record, I was a former diet coke addict. I didn't have one for well over a year out from my surgery, simply because I wasn't interested in having one. Now, I usually drink one every couple of days without any problem.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
