And since we're making parallels to addiction and recovery, it should be noted that relapse is a part of recovery.

A question was asked to people who are in a similar situation. I think your personal lectures on "backsliding" and such is really uncalled for and rude. We all have vices but they're not the same. The analogy using AA was good except when you go to a meeting and admit you fell off they don't get lectured they get support to fight another day.

The purpose of this forum so I thought was for support. The purpose of our new tool is ultimately to learn how to live life with things in moderation. If you can drink soda, eat dessert, drink alcohol and any other taboo behaviors in moderation then your on point!! Less judgment people we get enough of that from "regular" people no place for it here.

I didn't do in a rude manner which is more than I can say for some of the responses in this thread. Your philosophy on doing things in moderation is understandable, but what you do in moderation is not what I might do in moderation. I stated what works for me, and plainly said that what works for me, and the commitment that I made is my decision and may not work for everyone.

And please do not try to tell me or anyone else what should or should not be posted. As long as I am within the terms of service set out by the moderators, I will post exactly what I choose to post. If you don't like what I post you simply don't have to read it. As I said in my disclaimer, I may post something that you don't want to hear, but I will not hold my tongue. Thank you.

Shame on you John you have been here long enough to know when a person wants a "hard truth" or the wants to find support from like mined individuals.

Actually I wasn't addressing anyone personally but now I am. I have no concern with how you run your program but if the purpose of this forum is support than be supportive. We are all adults and should be able to ask a question without being lectured and belittled for making different choices.

And as far as telling you what you can and can not post I think your "reply" is truly the pot calling the kettle. If I feel like a person is being treated unfairly then it is my RIGHT to say what and how I feel. I have no problem holding my tongue either as you can see. And if you were that perturbed by my post than maybe it was intended for you.

I'm 5 weeks post op and I just had a very small drink of lemon lime soda. I made sure I let it sit in the glass for about an hour to let some of the carbonation go flat. I would say I had 2 oz and I felt fine. I was someone who drank soda often but when I decided I wanted to get sleeved I cut back drastically. While I understand that I need to stay away from my bad eating habits, I'm human and I don't believe in denying myself my rare guilty pleasures. And if I could go the rest of my life without certain foods or drinks that were not healthy, I would never have got sleeved. That being said, pour yourself a very small glass of soda, enjoy it, then go on with your day. :)

. It is my understanding that if you allow the soda to go flat you can drink away.... Mainly it is the carbonation that creates a issue. However, as many have said some are able to drink them fully loaded with carbonation with no discomfort. So, truth be told it is up to your toleration level.

I was told the exact same thing... make the soda or beer go flat and then you can drink it. BUT..... WHY would we want to drink something that is flat?

sweet brown say a COLD POP lol. Everyone has differant surgeons and drs. I was told in my 3 month session way before surgery that it is a tool and not a miricle maker. I was also told soda will cause the sleeve to stretch over time. but they also said no alchol and i drink that on occasion smh lol. but they didnt say alchol will stretch your stomach just carbonation.

Any time you want to. Same for eating brownies and ice cream, potato chips, any other junk. You can also stop exercising any time you want. Really, you can pick up any "bad" habit you might have given up for this surgery at any time you want.

Does that sound preachy? It's NOT meant to be. It's just a fact. YOU choose. I could say "Listen to the advice of your doctor," but really, if you're looking for people to say "Well, I did it and I'm fine," you're looking for a reason/excuse to return to something you quit doing for FOUR months.

So the real question, I think, is WHY? If it's GOOD for you, why'd you give it up for 4 months? You gave it up because it's NOT good for you, no matter how you try to rationalize it. Are you craving it? Perhaps, but do you really want to give in to that craving?

I say this from a "been there, done that" place. When I was first banded, I lost 85 lbs. Gave up sweet tea and almost all sugars, junk, etc. But little by little, I brought those things BACK into my life. Now? I'm 25-30 lbs heavier and need the sleeve to try to get my weight back down. I honestly wish I'd never started with the bad habits...

So that's my advice to you. You have FOUR months of not drinking useless calories...why not try to make it 5 months...or more?

In JohnLatte's defense (not that you need it, John, as you make your point brilliantly and politely)

The person who posted the original question presumably has not yet had any soda. They have posted here to inquire when it might be safe to drink it again. Now if any of us went to an AA meeting and asked "when is it safe to have a beer?" not a SINGLE soul there will say "oh, whenever you feel up to it!" That's called enabling; not support. They will do all in their power to remind that person of why they should not have a drink. It's a different story than when someone goes to an AA meeting and announces that they already had a drink, in which case yes, they would probably be showered with compassion.

Had the original poster made a different post, something along the lines of "so I had a soda, is that really so bad?" that indicated that the deed had already been done, then perhaps it might have been appropriate to be supportive and gently encouraging (and even then, someone is bound to do some chastising).

To the OP..it's best to ask your doctor or nutritionist. As you can see on here, the responses you may get are um not what you may expect. Best advice is if soda was something you consumed in great quantities prior to surgery, then it's probably not a wise decision to start up again unless you have some super self control!

I think the drastic change in food intake causes everyone to be slightly bitchy and judgemental. Lol!!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
