How long out of surgery could you...

Recommended Posts

Vacuum? My dr said to wait a month

Drive? I was told 10 days

Garden? As soon as I am up to it,just no lifting of over 10 pounds

Bath/swim?

Drink coffee?

Exercise?

I'm a week out, and have virtually no pain, and am antsy and curious how long other sleevers had physical restrictions. I know I have internal stitches and such, so I'm forcing myself to sit.

Thanks.

Started driving yesterday as I'm off pain meds. Also did 1/2 mile on the treadmill. I've been doing laundry. Cleaning etc. just listen to your body. If u do too much it will tell you. I was sleeved 23rd

Started drinking coffee 3 days ago. I'd stay away from baths and swimming as your incisions are still healing

I think if you stay under the weight lifting restriction, you can do as much as your body will let you. Until the incisions are healed (meaning no longer scabbed), you should avoid submerging in Water.

I'm glad you're feeling up to things! :)

I was ok to drive so long as I wasn't taking pain meds anymore. No lifting over 10lbs and my dr said basically if I was doing something and it hurt to just not do that. I could walk and I did a few weights that didn't force me to use my core. Just like arm ones. At 2 months I was cleared for any exercise I wanted to do. Bathing is ok as long as you don't submerge your incisions, those need to completely heal before you swim or cover them with Water. I was allowed to drink Decaf coffee for the first 2 months after that I could drink regular.

Vacuum? I probably waited a couple of weeks. I was pretty sore for a week or two and didn't really feel up to it. Not like anyone was really coming over in that time so I wasn't worried about it.

Drive? Their official booklet said 2 weeks. I was told I would be fine as long as I was 100% off the pain meds.

Garden? I was out and walking the first couple days, but I don't think I would have been up for bending down and moving like you need to garden for at least 2 weeks.

Bath/swim? Day after I was discharged from the facility.

Drink coffee? My doctor said no caffeine for six months. I probably tried some about four or five months out.

Exercise? Their official stance was like 4-6 weeks I think? I wasn't ready to really work out for maybe 4 weeks. I did walk twice a day for about 30 minutes starting a couple days after surgery though.

I think mine we're good at 6 weeks out. You just want to make sure they are sealed closed to where Water can't seep into the incision or it could cause an infection. Everyone heals at a different rate tho.

Vacuum? My dr said to wait a month My doctor never said anything but I did it at 3 weeks out and was so sore, I just had a dirty house for awhile. LOL.

Drive? I was told 10 days I was told once I got off pain meds. So for me that was about 3 days.

Garden? As soon as I am up to it,just no lifting of over 10 pounds I had a lifting restriction too, so I started gardening again at 8-9 weeks. Definately did not want to get a hernia!

Bath/swim? I was sleeved in Feb so I haven't swam but I just had to have fully healed incisions.

Drink coffee? I gave it up before getting sleeved. drinking tea now

Exercise? 6 weeks but no heavy lifting until at least 8 weeks

I'm a week out, and have virtually no pain, and am antsy and curious how long other sleevers had physical restrictions. I know I have internal stitches and such, so I'm forcing myself to sit.

Thanks.

I was chainsawing trees at 3 weeks.....but I still can't vacuum. Doc said that would stretch my sleeve, something about the repeated push/pull motion plus the drop in barometric pressure due to the vacuum....at least that's what I told the missus.

Wow! I think your doctor is BS'ing you!

I was told in no uncertain terms that running the vacuum would suck out the remaining part of my stomach so I would need a cleaning lady for the rest of my life.

My doc said it, I believe it and that's that! So far, hubby is buying it. :D

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
