Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been on here. I'll be there on the 4th, but a reminder would be helpful.

I'm going to try to get a fill soon because I've not only been able to eat too much, but I've been on steroids for a few weeks due to an eye issue...both are causing me to gain a few pounds. Nothing drastic, but enough to bum me out. I also have to get my ass to the gym again! I'm a slacker.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

Theresa

Hello Ladies!! I haven't been here forever! How are you all doing? Long story short, Josh and I left the nanny scene and both have good dependable jobs now and I am able to afford regular fills. I am getting back on the band wagon, and got a good fill on Monday and am down 5 lbs this week so far. I know it won't come off that fast for long but at least I am heading down now. It is a relief to not be gradually climbing. I figured it would be good for me to get back on here. I need to kick myself in the butt and stay on the wagon this time!

Wow! Marie! So good to see you posting again! I have thought of you often and wondered how you were doing! Hearing that you're back on the bandwagon and getting your fills sounds great! I saw a study recently that stated the most successful LapBanders are the ones that get fills - not big ones, but small fills every 4 to 6 weeks - they tend to lose consistantly and do well. IT also keeps their minds on track for working out and being accountable.

I know that when I was doing my best, I was seeing Dr K or Tom regularly. Sometimes life gets in the way with work and stuff and we get off track! What is so sweeet about the Band is you can return and start back from square one!

Don't be a stranger!

Hello, nearly new here. Originally wanted Dr. K to do my surgery but never quite saved up the cash to move forward. Got a call today from Chae's office that insurance approved my lap-band request. Surgery set for November 28th. I really didn't expect this kind of mental reaction on my part. Suddenly I'm scared crapless. It's taken 2+ years to get here and now that I can see this is really going to happen, the fear of failure or the fear that I can't live without stuffing my fat face anymore is a reality. Anyone else have this kind of reaction?

Dan

Well, Dan. Your surgery is today!! Please let us know how everything went when you feel up to it. Hopefully you will be able to meet up with us on the 4th.

I've been having a lot of dreams this last week. One was this recurring dread of being in an airport with tickets in hand to go somewhere. I was dodging other people and many roadblocks. Must have been the obstacle course prior to surgery?

Then last night I dreamt I was on the op table and they decided to you use a midget's lapband and it was called "The Laptastic"??

Anyway, got banded today. Still a sore but not too bad. I have to use this oxygen tank/generator for a few days and I really hate it. 7 hours later I was still hallucinating and would start and stop in mid sentece. sleeping on the couch tonight.

Thanks for the support!

Post op day 2. Incisions are really red and oozing. Very tender to the touch. I've thought about this for years now and this is not what I thought it would be? Hard to tell if I'm full, bloated, hungry or sick? I feel like crap all the time. Not enough food or is there something wrong? Not a fun time right now. I ventured out to a Vitamin Shoppe for some Protein and could hardly speak to the clerk. Sorry to ramble but my body aches all over and I can't take any ibuprofen. I have vicodin but that stuff shuts down all my sphincters and makes it impossible to eat.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
