Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

Well, I haven't been updating much, but I am going in for a fill on the 27th. It has been about a month and I have felt hardly any restriction. I have gained some, and I know Dr. K won't be happy that it took me so long to come in. But with my husband still being out of work, and my job ending next month I had to wait for our tax refund to get a flight. On the plus side though, I did buy an elliptical machine. I LOVE it! I have always liked them, and it is great to have one now. I didn't go all out, I only spent about $300 with a 2 year warranty and got it at Walmart. It is great to have something that is easier on my knees. Well, now I just have 10 days to not gain any more. Maybe I should go back on the preop diet. I went crazy on it and had NO carbs and NO sugar, but I did lose 9 lbs. Maybe I should do it.

I started using the Kellogs Protein Water mix. It is making me get more protein and all my water in. 5g protein and only 30 calories isn't bad. I like the pink lemonade and strawberry kiwi flavors.

Well, just thought I would update. How is everyone else doing?

Look at the waistline you have, and your jeans are so baggy - you are making great progress

Wanted to share a NSV...went bike riding yesterday for the first time in 6 years! I was a little wobbly at first, but really enjoyed myself once I got going.

Hi - I think I have read all 800+ pages of this thread over the last few months. I have met with Dr. K and wouldn't say my experience matches most of what I have read. As a result I checked out some of the other CO doctors for comparison. I find it crazy that none of the doctors have updated websites, but suspect that's not really that unusual for healthcare providers. But back to why I am posting:

My appointment with Dr. K was ok, but I felt rushed, didn't get a lot of specific information about the pre-op diet and generally left feeling like I wanted the surgery but needed more information.

Fast forward a year and I have the money I need (spouse job loss meant I couldn't in good conscious spend the 10K then but have managed to save another 6K so am ready).

Now that I have the money I have decided I can get the information I need, and the one thing I heard from Dr. K that no one else said was that his philosophy was to make sure you could still take a good long drink of Water after exercising rather than making the band so tight you could only take sips.

So, why am I posting? I realize the only thing stopping me is my fear of failure. Imagine spending 10K and failing. I have watched some people with the LAP-BAND® "fool the system" by drinking with their meals, or eating ice cream and other things that go down smoothly. I don't want to fail. I think I am ready to succeed with the help of the LAP-BAND®. I wish it was going to be easier than it will be, but ultimately I am going along with Mark Twain or Rory Cochrane who basically said you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.

Thanks for listening. Posting this is my commitment to calling and getting set up for the surgery, hopefully in May.

I appreciate all that you have shared, even if you didn't know you were helping me!

Still fearful of failing, but know that not trying is the biggest failure of all.

Try Dr. Michael Snyder, he is outstanding! Only Dr. I know that provides you with his personal e-mail and cell phone number! Check him out.

Actually, Dr. K gives his cell phone number out too. And he gets back to you really quick.

Anyone up for a challege??

It's been a while since we've done one. I was thinking we could do our first weigh in Sat (May 1) and go til June 5?

I am going to visit my friend in NJ June 8 and would like to lose at least 10 (hoping for 20) pounds by then.

If you'd like to join in, just let me know and I'll keep track.

So I finally updated my ticker with my gain. I have gained about 10 lbs. Dr. K wasn't worried about it that much though, because I was trying to follow the rules without restriction. And because I have been buying smaller waisted pants. He said that is a sign of gaining muscle. Which would make sense since I really started working out on my elliptical. Hopefully the fill I got Tuesday will help and I will start losing more.

I went to one of Dr. Synder's info sessions and he seems very vested in the success of his surgeries. But since I was self-pay, money was very important too. Dr. K. was about $4,000 less, so that was the deciding factor for me. I have had a wonderful experience with Dr. K and his crew!

YES! COUNT ME IN! We are celebrating our 20th anniversary with an Alaskan cruise-tour that departs on June 5. I am just fitting into a size sixteen but they are a bit snug. 10 pounds by June 5 would be awesome!!! That would get me over 70 pounds lost and into ONEDERLAND!

So I know I just got a fill last week, but it hasn't done squat and I am exercising my butt off. Literally!!!

Anyway, I am hoping to get a fill on the 25 or 27th this month. Are there any of you Denver area ladies, who might be willing to give me a ride from the airport to my appointment and back to the airport after. I would definitely pay gas and then some if someone could help me out. Thanks!

Marie, we haven't met yet, but I'd be happy to drive you to and from your appointment. Either day works for me, though the 27th would be awesome because I am catching a flight that evening anyway. Let me know.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
