Recommended Posts

How many carbs do you try to stay under each day. I wasn't given a certain number and just want to make sure I am in the right ballpark with carbs. I am 2 weeks post op on full liquids/ purée.

I can only speak from my experience... At 2 weeks post-op you should be worried about getting in your nutrients and that's it.. Whether it's from soft foods, purees, etc.. I am over 10 months out and I have never once counted carbs.. I'm down 129lbs... When I was 2 weeks out I was eating things like mashed potatoes, baked potato Soup, grits etc.. pretty much all carbs but the amounts are so small and frequent that your metabolism should speed up which makes the weight come off.

Hope this helps!! If you still feel the need to watch your carbs then speak with your surgeon of nutritionist for direction.

I hated the first few weeks after surgery when everything was cream this and liquid that. Felt like I was just stuffing myself with carbs! I don't exactly count my carbs but I only eat low carb stuff most of the time to keep them on the low side. I found carbsmart yogurt from Kroger that has 8 G Protein and 4g carbs. Tastes way better than Greek yogurt to me so that's my Breakfast most days. The rest of the day the meals center on protein so the amount I get in other foods is negligible. I'm almost 7 weeks out.

My guidelines are to stay under 100g of carbs a day, so they're pretty liberal. I honestly just try to stick with my primary guidelines, but I admit to deliberately putting carbs in my diet on occasion, though I try to stick with healthy carbs like whole grains rather than sugars or processed carbs.

You are going to get suggestions and advice from all over place.. LOL We all have different experiences... I have always known what I needed to eat in order to lose weight... My issue before surgery was control... and yes.. I probably ate some things that I shouldn't have eaten BUT.... the beauty of this surgery is the fact that it has given me what I didn't have before.. C O N T R O L!!! I enjoy pretty much the same foods as I enjoyed before.. Just very small portions... Now granted.. I do lead with Protein first which definitely fills you up faster but I also enjoy my carbs. I can eat rice, Pasta, etc.. but I do so in moderation. If I crave a cookie I eat a cookie... The difference is that before surgery I would eat 8-10 oreos... Now I have one or two and am completely satisfied. I make better choices because I now eat to fuel my body versus out or boredom.

My philosophy is this..... I didn't have this surgery to be on a diet for the rest of my life.. For the past 20 years I have counted points, carbs, exercised 5-6 days of week, etc... to only lose at the most 40 lbs before plateauing... My body was just too comfortable being fat and I needed to do something drastic to shock it into losing weight.

Because of this surgery I have finally won my weight loss battle! My surgeon says I was the "perfect" candidate and honestly... my entire experience has been pretty easy and nothing short of amazing!!!

I LOVE MY SLEEVE!! Best decision I have ever made and best money I ever spent!!! :)

My nutritionist told me not to worry about calories, fat, carbohydrates, etc. Just be sure you're getting your daily Protein in. MyFitnessPal.com gave me numbers based on my height and weight and I am under those numbers everyday even though I am not counting.

I carried a lot of weight in my stomach area before getting sleeved. By eating a low carb diet for post op, I believe that losing the visceral fat around my stomach was much easier. I did not eat any carbs that were not already part of my high Protein diet except for carbs found in the light soy milk I drink. Everyone is certainly free to eat in the manner that suits them, but I have found eating between 20-30 carbs a day, perhaps less, has really helped. Keep in mind I eat a fairly restricted diet that might not be suitable for everyone.

I've been a low carber for forever so counting carbs is second nature to me. Your first count should be your Protein, always. Within the first month or so post op, you should be building your daily Protein intake to your surgeon's recommended level for you-- typically between 60 and 80 grams per day. We are always instructed to get our Proteins in first and then add carbs... and by carbs, I assume most doctors mean fibrous carbs-- leafy green vegetables and the like. A lot of people can't handle bread or rice post surgery... it just doesn't seem likely that my doctor wants me to have baked chicken breast and then back fill with buttetry Pasta. The most I indulged in was refried Beans which are starchy but have a lot of protein.

As you get further along, you may want to keep your eye on your calories, carbs and fat as they relate to your protein. While I enjoy beef and pork more than chicken, those tend to be higher in calories, which puts me above a calorie level that is optimal for losing for ME. Tracking what you eat is essential for control as well as for seeing what works with your body. You might see a great result from eating 800 to 1000 calories as opposed to 600 to 800 calories. You also might not see any detrimental effect from eating breads, pastas and rice. It's all about finding the sweet spot... and that's going to be different for every person.

For right now, through about week 4ish, concentrate on Proteins, getting in all your liquids and moving through the post op phases as your surgeon recommends. I didn't worry much about that stuff until i was fully eating solid foods, around 5 or 6 weeks out.

I'm a bit over 4 months post-op. For me I try to get in 50 or less carbs per day. Typically I get my largest concentration of carbs in the morning for breakfast and spread the rest out over the day. There are of course days when my carb allowance is more that the 50grams. I say find a plan that works for you.

Thanks everyone!! I am ready to be at the point where this all comes natural and is my new normal! I am so glad to have made this decision! Wish I could have made it sooner!

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
