Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Mark, I started elliptical and cycling at 3 weeks. Started pushing myself about 6 weeks (I had hernia repair). I didn't get in a big hurry and there's no real reason to. It's a long road we're on. I actually didn't start jogging till I was 4 months out. Not intentionally, that's just when I got interested. Plus by then I was down about 100 pounds and felt quite a bit better.

My newest high tech running shoes. Yes they are made for running. No they don't hurt my feet...they actually help strengthen my feet and lower leg muscles and allow them to work the way mother nature intended.

For those of you runners wearing highly cushioned motion control shoes and/or orthotics, I highly recommend you read the book "Tread Lightly." It's a great history of the development of running shoes, and the (lack of) science behind them.

Ah patience, my arch nemesis it seems. I have to find a way to get that, like the quote in your sig says, my patience wasn't removed during surgery...so...one day at a time. I think my plan to start c25k on the elliptical for the first few weeks, and just doing week 1 over and over won't be too awful bad, we'll see how it goes.

I like those. I'd like them if I didn't have ogre feet, and well...socks with sandals...meh. I want some Vibrams, but my wife is against them on all fronts. I may just spring for them and buy them anyway.

I have 2 pair of vibrams and love them. There are certainly other brands of minimalist shoes out there just as light and minimal as the vibrams but look like regular shoes. The market is exploding right now.

I'm a big fan of the Merrill trail glove and the Inov-8 Bare X.

Have any of you experienced runners had knee pain? What did you do? I have a call in to my surgeon's office to see if Glucosamine/Chondroitin is an option. Thanks.

Yes, i had about a week in my running history where I had some (left) knee pain. I just took up RICE for a few days and really concentrated on how my foot interacted with the surface. I found out I was not absorbing the shock correctly in my upper legs and core correctly.

Once I worked on adding a little more shock absorbing functionality in my running, the minor injury done to my knee cleared up. Danny, spear header of chi running, has been my role model from the beginning. It is really important to run in a relaxed manner in order to prevent injury, and run faster, especially if you are going to start running at a heavier weight. By heavier, I am talking about 250 lb or higher.

For reference, I wanted to lose 100 lb before starting to run not only to prevent common injuries, but also because I have a recent foot injury. I started running after losing 130 lb, placing me at 225 lb. Running has helped me drop down to 180 lb over the next couple months. I have stalled out for the last month, but hope my body will give in once I start running longer distances. My 5k time is about 25 min and my 10k time is about 57 min. I hope to be running the 1/2 by summer time and look up to those who already are able to run the 1/2 and the marathon.

I was 300 lbs still when I started running...and yeah, my knees hurt like hellfire. Both of them. I suffered through it for several weeks, then happened onto chi-running like fiddleman was talking about. I also did alot of reading on barefoot running and minimalist shoe running....changed everything for me. The change in form and gait took the impact off my knees (and all my joints for that matter) and put it where it belongs....on my muscles which are able to absorb energy. Now I run absolutely pain free. But honestly, from the moment I ditched my big thick cushioned running shoes and went with minimal shoes (and changed my gait appropriately....i.e. forefoot strike instead of heel strike) everything got better.

First day running, walked 5 minutes at 2.8 MPH, 20 min. alternations running at 3.5 for 1 min. then 2.8 for 1 min., then 5 min. at 2.8 MPH. Had knee replacement 2 years ago so have to be careful. Also did 1 hour of Water aerobics in deep end of pool with a class. Not on any anti inflammatory so actually, I'm proud of what I did. Haven't run since I chased grand-kids when they were little and the oldest is 15 now. LOL!!

I'm signed up for my first 5k in June, it's class the splash dash. Texas, summer, 110 degrees, a 5k with Water balloon fights, water hose gangs, and pools you gotta cross mid way, I'm in. Figured it'd be a decent, family fun 5k to do for my first. Wife and kids are signed up, should be fun.

I am just starting the process and go see my surgeon on Wednesday. I have decided to start running/walking to get my body ready for what's to come. How long post surgery do I have to wait to get back into exercising??? I have a great support group at work who are giving me all kinda if advice in how to start in my walking/running goals.

Generally, the doctors will want you to wait 6 weeks before getting into intense exercise or lifting. Walking can and should be done as soon as possible for many reasons. Start slow and build up your distances and intensity in those first few weeks after surgery. The first walk will feel like hell and probably be a block in distance or less, but it is part of the process to recover from surgery. Depending on your own goals and motivation, you might start the c25k after the 6 week mark. Some start later. Listen to your body in order to prevent injury. I like to champion the ChiRunning style because it focuses on a running technique that minimizes injury and maximizes efficiency / enjoyment. It is one approach to running. There are many in this forum that can help with running suggestions.

I got a modified release to work out everything except my abs at 2 weeks. I've listened to my body and I'm doing fine. I'm 5 weeks out now and really enjoying my new found love of exercise.

That is great. Exercise is a nice "love" to have as so many benefits can be derived from it.

Thanks for the inspiration! I am on W1D3 :-) By the end, I feel so energized that I don't want to stop! I am afraid that the knee pain from before surgery will return, so chi-running and minimalist running shoes sound like a topic to look into.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
