Girl !! You know I'm going to call you out on the Water thing!!! That is the key! It sucks sometimes because I feel like I'm drinking all day.. like its a full time job! But when I keep it up I lose the weight.

Oh and I know about the display thing! My favorite is when they ask me everyday "how much weight have you lost now" of course they don't do it as much now because they value their lives!! :P

I know, I've GOT to find a way to get more Water down my throat....

When my brother asked me, so how much weight have you lost?, I lied and said 25 lbs.... I had told him 20 lbs 2 weeks ago and I was too embarrassed to tell him I had not lost anything in almost 2 weeks. Oh what a tangled web we weave.... LOL...

Ok, tomorrow promise you will drink 60oz and I will will do the same?

And you know what I've done when people start talking to me about It, i say "yeah it's hard sometimes and some people ask everyday how much have you lost now, and it just adds to the pressure" then I say "no no not you" but really it is them and they remember to shut their yaps after that! :P

I don't think expected weight loss can be calculated quite that easily because there are stalls and metabolism/thyroid function is different for everyone. I would have to say calculating expected weight loss is non-deterministic' date=' non-linear and has too many variables and unknowns. Quite simply it is not just calories in and calories out.[/quote']

He was saying 20lbs is probably about what they'd calculate. They're doing great a d not to beat themselves up! That's how I read it anyway :)

I am 50 too, but look at it this way: while all the skinny menopausal ladies are becoming unpleasantly surprised by their new little bellies, we are see our big ones go away. At a little over 5 wks out I've lost 16 lbs and feel so great! Like Orthoman said, if I'd lost this much this fast at any other point in my life it would have been a miracle.

I'm a southern gal here in Louisiana too! We love our king cake and soul food and Salt. But not to worry, even slow losers hit stalls. The thing about stalls are, though, that they are just that - Stalls - Not stops!

:) I know its tough to go through, but up your Water and continue on your journey! Don't beat yourself up, You will finish the race!!

I am in the process of waiting for my first visit with the doctor on March 1st. Seems very discouraging that people are slow losers on 600 - 800 calories a day. Is this the norm or an oddity?

Lol!! How to answer that one! Why yes I'm a freak of nature...

But seriously we all lose at radically different paces, so many factors, age, weight, exercise,DIET, Fluid intake.... :)

Oh and Dana I'm right there too almost 47!!

Ok' date=' so I'm a slow loser. Not a surprise. The doc and nutritionist told me that would be the case up front. ( various medical issues, medications). I've lost right about 20 lbs in almost 6 weeks. Deep down I was hoping for some sort of sleeve magic and I would lose more. But ok, so it panned out just like they said...

Superbowl Sunday comes around.... I had a Protein shake for Breakfast and we head out to my brother's house to watch the game with a few people. Jay, my husband, had barbecued ribs (his specialty and one of my favorites) and brought them with us.

This is what I ate or attempted to eat

*1 pork rib ( my first since surgery)

*2 or 3 few crackers with a little dip

*2 tablespoons artichoke casserole ( only able to take a few bites)

*1 piece of King Cake ( a traditional Mardi Gras thing -- we're in the middle of Mardi Gras here in New Orleans . It is something like say a cinnamon roll with icing).

I had another rib and a few spoons of artichoke casserole when we got home later that evening.

Well, guess what? Got on the scale 2 days later and I had gained 3lbs. WHAT??? My head tells me that scientifically that cannot be possible. Yes, I ate more calories than I normally would but it probably came out to about 1500 calories. Yes, I overate but I did not go crazy with it. Of course I know it takes 3500 calories over maintenance levels to add a pound. The scale today says I gained two pounds. So maybe the 1 lb was Fluid. Maybe it's all Fluid ( I'm doubting it because I am on a diuretic for blood pressure).

Anyway, just really down. Down about not losing more, down about gaining from a mild variation from 800 calories a day..... and now wondering if I'm just freaking doomed.

Doomsday Dana is gearing up.......

Oh and by the way, I'm open book-- it's just my personality. I've told all my friends and family about the surgery. Well, now I feel like I'm on display --everybody is checking me out to see if I've lost any weight. It's like, not only do I have to deal with my own disappointment at not losing more but now I feel embarrassed because I know everyone else is thinking, Damn - she can't even lose weight with 85% of her stomach cut out..... Of course, no one actually says that but I guarantee you that they're thinking something similar.[/quote']

So proud of how well you are doing. How is your MS doing with all the changes. How has your healing been. Concerned with all the MEDS that I am on and wonder how that will be for me with my MS.

Hey Liz,

No problems with my MS or Lupus at all. I was concerned about my meds too -- I take a lot and wasn't sure how I would be able to swallow all my pills. Turns out I was worried for nothing -- I've had zero issues with being able to drink or swallow my pills. A few hours after surgery I was sipping Water without issue and then progressed being able to drink normally ( no guzzling of course) the next day.

The only "problem" is how to fit all the do's and don'ts in --- must not take Calcium within 2 hours of multi-Vitamin, must not take PPI or antacid within 4 hours of taking my Synthroid....the Multivitamin makes me nauseous so I have to time that as well. I really need a spreadsheet to keep track!

You know that the math doesn't add up, you had a few extra bites of this and that but not enough to gain several pounds. The up and down part of this "thing" can make you crazy. You are a smart cookie, you have done a lot of research and know that if you stick with the plan it does work. Get rid of that doomsday thinking. You are headed in the right direction even if the pace is slower than you would like. You can do this!

Dana i know exactly how you feel. I am also a slow loser. Today i am exactly 7 weeks out and have lost just 23pnds since surgery day. This past week is the only week thst surprised me with a 4 pnd loss and im sure its because i drank my BP pill which i havent drank in like 2 wks' date=' it has a diuretic so thats probably the 4 pound. Im ok with losing as long as the rumor of no or little shaggy skin is true. So far i haven't really seen anyone confirm this.[/quote']

Ah geee. I didn't quote understand why people were calling themselves "slow losers" what a dum dum am I!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
