Over 400Lbs Gastric Sleeve Success Story

Recommended Posts

WOW, James. That is fantastic. Congratulations! And to think you did it in just under a year. Good for you!

Care to share any secrets to your success? My HW was 431, but it was 2 years ago, before I had surgery. Between the various weight loss diets, I managed to lose 72 lbs. before surgery on 11/1/13.

I have only lost 27 pounds in the last 2 months. Nothing in the last 2 weeks. This has me concerned. I have severe arthritis, and the cold weather is making it near impossible for me to get around, so I'm not getting any exercise. I need both knees and hips replaced, but that will be after I lose more weight.

Clearly, I am a lot older than you. And I'm very happy for you that you did this for yourself at a young age. What a great life you have ahead of you.

Ah, I finally found the right forum for me. I'm 417lbs and want the sleeve but doc is recommending bypass. Doesn't sound right for me for so many reasons so I'm thrilled to see so many success stories with similar starting weights and great successes. I'm committed to the process and feel I'll have great success with the sleeve. I hear it's not really very easy to stretch like you hear people talk about because it's actually the less stretchy part and more muscular part of the stomach that the sleeve is made from. Have others heard this too? So happy to have found you all.

I started at 410. I was sleeved 09.27.2013. I'm down 110 pounds. Current weight 300. I still have aways to go. But hey it's working and I'm not even a full 6 months out yet.

i think that's something of an urban myth. i cant even count how many people have told me. do whatever feels good for you. the sleeve may be slightly less effective but it's much safer.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
