Did you keep your surgery a secret?

I'm still aways out from having my surgery but I have already decided I'm not telling a soul. In the begining of this year I had to have surgery due to a ruptured cyst on my ovary....well what do you know....it happened again ;)

I told my Husband, and my mother and sister. My mother is having it done too, so her husband knows, so soon all my town and the next town will know. My sister cares for my grandma so she knows, and she will tell all the aunts and uncles. And my husband blurted it out to my inlaws in the grocerie store. So its really a question of who doesnt know by now.

I've only told a few family members. I'm not ashamed but its just very personal. When people ask me how I've lost so much I tell them I stopped drinking soda and that I cut my portion size way down. It's not a lie because that's what I've done I just don't feel everyone needs to know my medical history!

I think everyone has to do what is right for them. I have told a few people but not many. Inside I want to tell people but then I chicken out.

I pretty much have to tell some people at work. Just my department though. I work in healthcare and can't work with lifting restrictions. My surgeon does 8 weeks of lifting restrictions, so I will be out 8 weeks. I don't want to lie, but 8 weeks will lead to questions. I already told my director because she is double checking the rules for restrictions for me. I am hoping we can work around it. But if it is a liability for the company, then they won't let me work.

As for others in my life, of course my husband knows. I have told my sister and a couple friends. My immediate family and Close friends I plan to tell, but that's it. If extended family ask I won't lie.

I am really happy about my decision and excited for my jounrney. I don't want to feel like it is something to be ashamed of. But I also don't want to have to defend myself for skeptics over and over. My body, my decision. And I know this is the right decision to finally be happy and healthy. :-)

For those who told absolutely no one, just wondering--did you not have anyone with you at the hospital? How did you get home from the hospital? (don't you have to have someone there for them to release you?).

Although I have not had my surgery I don't plan on telling a soul. I will ask either my ex boyfirend or my aunt to pick me up. I plan on telling them that I had to have surgery to remove another cyst (happened last year). When I ge to the point of the liquid diet I will just tell everyone I am fasting to cleanse my system. As far as expaling small meals in the future when I eat out. I just plan on telling people that I ate something healthy at home before I came so i would not over eat...so ill just order a small appatizer...problem solved.

I should have kept a secret because those I've confided in told many people. Sucks.

I don't plan on telling anyone outside of my mom, except my immediate supervisor and HR when I do my FMLA paperwork. I told my best friend/co-worker that I had my consultation. She's chomping at the bit to tell EVERYONE she knows that knows me. I told her I would kill her... it's my personal business. She had the audacity to tell me that I don't have the right to keep my business a secret. Made her a deal, she can tell my business, when I can discuss her procedure that no one knows about but me. After all, you don't have the right to keep your business a secret. Problem solved ;-)

As of right now only my husband, my mom and best friend know. I haven't decided how I'm going to handle questions from others nor decided how to handle my inlaws. I know they will be so against it. And the majority of my friends are health/fitness fanatics and personal trainers so I know they won't understand.

Well I'm just explaining that I took care of medical issues and started Atkins, which if you bread up on you will see the bariatric diet is comparable.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
