Lapband to sleeve weight loss

Recommended Posts

I was reading a YouTube by a dr saying that because lapband stretches esophagus and pouch he does not recommend to do removal of the band and sleeve in one surgery and that weight loss is poor if they are done together. Any thoughts,

Well I had mine done in one procedure....and I'm 6 months post op and have lost 85 pounds with 84 to go....

I think its what you make it....my doc told me that my loss will be slower than the typical VSG patient because I had the band for 7 years, but I'm ok with it...as long as I can work hard to each my ultimate goal!

I haven't seen any studies on this, but it seems that surgeons are following hunches on this stuff. All i can share is my personal experience... I had the lapband for 10 years and weighed over 300 pounds, I had serious dialation. My band came out in Sept, I was sleeved in December. It has been just over a year and i have lost 135 pounds so I feel I have been very successful with the sleeve.

I am trying to get my dr to take it out, i was self pay. I will see, maybe I will have it unfilled to begin with. I want to heal it before I convert. Anyone else?

My history is band 4 years ago, fill defill and filled at 2 cc and i am not having any luck, I lost 20 pounds

I have dilation of the esophagus that I am still battling, despite my band being taken out 3 months before being sleeved.

I still can only eat what a 'normal' sleever eats, but I don't get relief from hunger.

I too had dilation in my esphogus....my doc said it would not go away, and the way he made my sleeve I can eat just a little more than the typical sleeve patient because of my dilation....

I also had my lapband unfilled 2 weeks prior to my procedure....I too was self pay because my insurance refused to cover any revision....he told me that I may have to have 2 surgeries but was able to do it in one procedure (which I am thankful)

I honestly dont think there is much difference between either waiting or having a all in one....I think it has more to do if you had any major complacations like erosion or abnormal slippage...

So with band I don't get feeling of fullness, I just get tight, do you get satisfied with sleeve?

My band eroded 40% so I had to have it removed then wait six months for the scar tissue to settle and the hole in my stomach to heal before having tests to determine if the sleeve was going to work for me (upper gi, upper endoscopy and esophageal manometry). I am good to go and just received the approval from my insurance company. I jhope to have surgery in January. So far my surgeon hasn't suggested that my weight loss will be any different but I will be sure to ask him.

So far, I don't get satisfied, but my surgeon really thinks it'll change. I still get that full/tight feeling up high with a hungry, rumbly feeling down low, just like I did with my band.

Yes, I feel Fat Full when I've had enough with the sleeve....I love it! I actually feel full after very little to eat!

the physical sensation is different. I was still hungry with the band - like I would have food stuck and be in pain but still feel like had an empty stomach. I don't have that feeling AT ALL with the sleeve.

The other difference is my own mindset. I am just alot more "over" food as recreation then I was when I was banded in 2001.

So with band I don't get feeling of fullness, I just get tight, do you get satisfied with sleeve?

just had band removed and sleeved in one procedure on 12/26. Doc did not mention there being a possibility for slower weight loss progress, but my band experience was horrible e.g. 20lbs only after 4 years; never had band fully filled either, just couldn't eat anything with 4-6cc's. I guess we will see how it goes.

I had the band done and it was in for 4 years. I did lose 60 pounds but in the end there was dialation and a hernia. I converted all at once which I am glad because I did not want o go through a bunch of surgeries and time off from work. I am feeling sad and frustrated now though. I feel like I can't eat anything. I was sleeved on Nov 30 and it is very difficult to feel satisfied before I am stuffed with that really full feeling. I feel that my stomach is full and I cannot eat anything else, but I don't know if it is in my head or what is going on. I feel like I have made a huge mistake because I can not even eat a full small meal. I have to get the Protein in of which you can only eat very little, and never get to the salade or vegtables. Also, I feel like I am behind getting Fluid in all the time. You can't drink much at a time and then I have to stop and wait. Will it get better in time or is this something I am going to have to live with? Help let me know if you have been through this.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
