Five things no one every told me how to deal with

Recommended Posts

Being able to go for a run with my 14 year old son and seeing the looks of "How cool is that" from the people who drive by. The pride I hear in my boy's voices when they tell people how much weight I lost and how I am now a 'hot mama'! The appreciation in my husband eyes and the fact he can now carry me anywhere, anytime! Wearing clothes that fit, shopping the clearance rack because there are a lot of small size clothes there, being in control of my food choices, finding my voice to say no to people, having the seat at the movies swallow me whole...oh the list goes on and on! I HAVE MY LIFE BACK and I even have a life I never imagined.

Thanks for sharing! I can not wait until I have these problems! I have to admit I was looking in one of my THREE closets yesterday thinking some person is going to get some REALLLY nice clothes and it kind os made me sad. I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars on clothes I LOVE to shop and they are all going to to be too big. A part of me is sad but I can not wait until they are!!! I'll be shopping at goodwill until I reach my goal weight!

Same here. Every time I turn around I'm having to cull things out of my closet. Now I'm down to the smallest size I have in my wardrobe, 14, and after that I have nothing. ...and I'm not even half way through to my goal weight!

So far I've removed size 20, 18, 16 pants, dresses, sweaters and tops.

Well..this one is not as much fun as some of the others ...

I bought a new hat for winter a few days ago. I thought it was cute and sassy. I took a photo of myself wearing it, no makeup, big smile. When I looked at the photo I was shocked. I mean really, really shocked.

I have never really had any facial wrinkles before because there was so much fat in my face. Well, after close to 50 lbs of weight loss, there they are. Crows feet, under eyes, across cheeks,...and more crow's feet. Especially with the crow's feet. I have 56 lbs to go to meet my goal weight. I guess that I'll just start collecting these wherever they surface.

Janerose- thanks for the post....

The rapid weight loss' date=' everyone wants to know my secret <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Having to buy new clothes on a monthly basis. At this rate I'm going to have to get a second job to keep up (lol)

That i would be able to run & play with my grandchildren, without running out of breath, so soon...I love it!!!

And, finally, how soon I would feel like a new person....co morbidities gone!!!

[/quote']

I really haven't told anyone-any suggestions on how to handle things when people start asking. I have already set the stage on talking about going to the gym every day. Soon that won't fly.

@Mich: I'm still pre-op, but I haven't told anyone at work... My plan is just to say I was having some medical issues and/or that I am on a strict Dr. Supervised diet... (both of which are true!)... don't imagine people will ask a lot of questions after "medical issues" and if they do I can say it's personal...?

I like it. Hope you don't mind if I use that! I haven't told anyone but hubby, son and wife, daughter and boyfriend and two sisters. They assured they would not tell. At first I was just afraid that something would go wrong and then I would have to explain why I didn't have the surgery. And now it's kind of "we'll I got this far without telling anyone, I guess I won't tell now. We will see what happens.

I know what some people will say----well here she goes on yet another diet, how long will she stick with this one !!!! This is the last one.

I am an equestrian, I had no idea that the reason I had my stirrups so short before was because of how fat my thighs were. My legs have grown in length, when riding, and I feel more like a normal rider!

No one told me that at my current size - still 15-20# away from goal - many people would consider me pretty good looking....hahaha... it is great! Perfection not required.... progress toward better is my new mindset!

I also ride, but I ride english and do hunter/jumpers. What I'm looking forward to is placing higher than those skinny girls without skill. It's so political, you won't win unless you look pretty and I can't wait to see the look on those girl's faces when I beat them which I will because I can actually ride versus pay for $100,000 horses and look pretty. So excited!

Hi

I didnt know that a lot of my fears would just disappear.I look at the skidivers and think that would be nice.I want to constantly do stuff I havent in 25 years (I exhaust my family)

But,I didnt know I would become so shy.All the attention really gets to me and I become quite embarrassed when people make a big scene about my weightloss, especially when there is a lot of people around.I also didnt expect my overweight friends to become so uncomfortable around me.I hope this will pass.

And I didnt know I would be so stressed about seeing my family for the first time after a 120 pound weight loss.I shopped up a storm for the holiday just about 10 days ago and dropped 12 pounds in the last 10 days ( dont know why so fast) and now some of the new clothes I bought washed and packed are way to big.Brand new, never warn. Will have to shop again this weekend,o and I love shopping way to much now.

I didnt know that the housekeeper would keep putting my clothes in my teeny tiny housemate and my oldest daughters closets.I am constantly looking for stuff. She told me this week that Its the same size than some of the other's clothes.

One of the craziest things.I never in a lifetime thought I would worry about losing too much fat as they need some to do sculpting with when I go for plastics.hehehe, who would have thought?

You can also lie and get away with having a thyroid problem that your now on medication for. Those make you drop pounds like CRAZY.

wrinkles

I lost 50 lbs last year and noticed all the wrinkles appearing, I freaked out and I think that might have gone a long way in sabotaging my most successful diet in years.

This year I have no choice because my sleeve won't let me quit :)

I am HOPING it is just a deflated balloon scenario where the skin just hasn't tightened back up after the fat underneath is gone and most of these wrinkles will go away.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
