my first time slimming. i ate lunch at work, came back to my desk thinking 30 min passed, WRONG, i was really thirsty the wings i had for lunch were really salty so i took my Water and chugged 3 big gulps and by the 3rd gulp i felt it in my chest, it hurt so bad i had to spit the rest of the water out of my mouth because i couldnt take anymore in. that is the worse freaking feeling to have that stuck feeling in the middle of your chest and it wont go down and wont come up i had tears in my eyes and my nose was running and my mouth was watery. i am slowly learning not to take that last bit in. lesson learned

I found this ariticle going through google i hope it helps someone understand how food and beverage work in our new tummy's

First, I’m not a doctor nor have I ever played one on TV.

This may be old news to some..... But I’ve noticed a lot of people who have had VSG do not have any idea how the Pyloric Valve works.

This is my understanding how the Pyloric Valve works.

The Pyloric Valve function and how it pertains to your VSG.

The function of your Pyloric valve is the single most not talked about important part of understanding how and when you should eat and drink.

The Pyloric Valve is just that....It is a valve that is located at the bottom of your stomach/sleeve. This valve is in between your sleeve and the lower intestine. The basic definition of a valve is an apparatus that opens and closes.

When open this valve it is about the diameter of a dime. When closed it’s opening is closed down to the diameter of the head of a ballpoint pen.

Dense Proteins and harder to digest foods will cause the Pyloric valve to close to hold the food in your stomach for pre-digestion...... stomach acids breaking down this “Rough” food.

That’s why we are told to eat dense Proteins first.....To close the Pyloric Valve so food stays in your stomach/sleeve longer so we have a sense of satisfaction.

It takes about 30-60 minutes for the food to clear the Pyloric Valve...... Than it’s OK to drink.

That is also where the term slider food comes into play. A slider food does not close the Pyloric Valve and as the term is intended.....food slides right past an open Pyloric Valve.

There is a video that gets posted every so often that is supposed to explain food going past the Pyloric Valve. The guy uses a funnel and has apple sauce or something in it....and it shows the apple sauce dripping out the end of the funnel very slow. Than he pours Water on top of the apple sauce to dilute it, illustrating drinking after eating.....and the diluted apple sauce runs through the funnel end faster. Than he concludes that this is how your pyloric valve

This happened to me the other day. I swear I was nearly standing on my head to get the Water to move away from my stomach. Lol

Ugg....I haven't done that but I'm still in the pureed stage and suppose to have 2 oz.

I ate 2.5 oz. the other day and I had that feeling where it felt like the food was coming up my esophagus...it wasn't a vomiting feeling or heartburn it was just a feeling of the food overfilling my new small stomach and felt like it was trying to come up. I'll be so glad when I can have more than 2 oz.

I'm feeling the same way.... I think I had too much tonight..I had a small bowl of cream of wheat (thin), but the "fat girl" in me wanted to eat one more bite!!! I threw up/slimmed a little bit... I feel like I have more to do...(ugh....NEVER AGAIN)

Fortunately I've always had to be deathly ill before I throw up...it was kind of like I felt like I needed to burp but ...I knew it wasn't a burp I was feeling that needed to come up, it was food..I have taken TINY sips of tea while eating before if I just cant stand it...or chewed a very small piece of ice out of my tea, so far that hasn't caused a problem.

I'm kind of confused that when I get to the stage I can eat 'regular foods' it says 4-6oz....but what causes the stomach to be able to hold more? I didn't think to ask the doctor that when I went for my week post op visit Friday.

Yes I read the article, unfortunately I'm not really eating Protein as far as the part where it says dense protein stays at the bottom. I understand I just shouldn't have eaten that extra half an ounce and I have noticed the couple of times it occurred I believe I didn't have my food pureed quite enough...it definitely wasn't 'slider food'! Do you know the answer to my stomach question as far as being able to consume 4-6 ounces at the 3rd stage of the diet?

Melinda -Your stomache is swollen and inflamed for a while after surgery...as the swelling goes down you will be able to tolerate a little more food... It's all relative to what your eating, how slow u eat, how well u chew, how far post op you are...

I'm almost 3 months out and I have to tell you that sliming can be more than just that watery feeling in your mouth. You can actually throw up, but the only thing that comes up is watery saliva! Now, that's gross and will really keep you from taking the next bite. I've read that it can happen with eating chicken that's microwaved, so watch out! 45 lbs down thought! And guess what? Skinny is starting to taste pretty good!

Oh my chicken and eggs get me every time! I guess I have to chew more! My mom is always trying to give me a drink after I eat to help the hiccups but I tell her its a no no and will make it worse!! The best thing that helps me is walking immediately after I eat. Whether its just around house or outside any walking besides sitting after eating helps. Even sometimes I wait over 30 mins to drink the food still seems stuck.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
