So for the last 4 months I have had my.mind set on the band but lately I question if that is right for me. The one major thing that made me decide that I wanted the band was because of the risks. I really think I would be more successful with the sleeve due to the decrease in hunger, restrictive eating and watnot. What made you decide to go with the sleeve instead of other wls? Right.now I'm 5 7 and 342 lbs. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I was origanaly gonna get the band but after speaking with my doctor, I chose the sleeve. Yes there could be complications, but all surgeries do, but at the same time the sleeve has a very low risk of complications. I wanted to lose weight at a decent pace and the band was too slow of weight change. After research I know the sleeve is right for me! :D

After doing my research I never really considered the other options. If I couldn't have had the sleeve I would not have had weight loss surgery.

To me, the sleeve is the best mix of benefit-risk. For most, less complications and malnutrition than RNY, and no risk of anything slipping or eroding like with the band.

The only real leap you have to make with the sleeve is that it's not reversible because a large chunk of your stomach is gone forever. But I don't think anyone would ever go back to normal upon reversing the other surgeries.

Good luck with your decision.

I hade thought about the lapband, but feelt I wouldn't loose as much weight seeing that I am 5'6 368lb, and hope to loose at least 180lb

I also didn't want to have to keep going every 6 weeks for fills. Do your reserch and do wats best for you and your life style.

Good Luck. :)

I HAD the Lap Band....I had the Lap band surgery in August 2010 and had it removed August 2012. I had the SLEEVE surgery done on October 1st. The Lap band didn't work for me...I never lost more than 20 lbs and all the healthy food would get stuck and make me vomit. I couldn't eat chicken, salad, steak, aspargus, etc without having problems. That caused me to eat more "slider" foods such as ice cream and soft foods. I have only had the sleeve for a few days, so I cannot honestly tell you how its helping me, but I know I would definitely never have gotten the Lap band if I knew what it would be like. And I was 240 lbs at the time of both surgeries.

Im so glad I found out about the sleeve when I was researching WLS, for me it was the best option, like sleevedude said, if it wasnt a option I dont think I would have had WLS. From a lot of things I have read most Lap Banders have to either get the band taken out sometime down the road, or revise to another surgery, not trying to steer you in any direction, but make sure you do a lot of research.

Wishing you the best of luck!

I initially wanted the Lap Band. While doing my research a friend mentioned the sleeve to me. That was the first time that I had even heard of it. After researching the differences, reading tons of posts here, and watching tons of You Tube videos I decided the sleeve would be best for me. Also at the WLS seminar my surgeon showed several comparisons between the sleeve, the Lap Band and gastric bypass. It seemed to me that the sleeve is right in the middle as far as the risks are concerned. Also the success rate seems higher with sleeve patients vs. Lap Band patients.

I too considered the band when I was thinking about WLS. I am a nurse practitioner so I hit the research journals and studies have shown that there is a statically high failure rate with the lap band. In fact in Europe, the band is pretty much being abandoned because of the high rate of failure.

This past year at the Bariatic Surgeon conference more and more surgeons are moving toward the sleeve procedure.

It is a personal and individual choice. Good luck to you in making an informed decision.

I have not had surgery yet. I had a consultation with the surgeon and will be returning on October 16 to let him know my decision on which type of WLS I would like. I have decided to go with the sleeve after reading about it.

My doctor said he had to remove a lot of lap bands and he no longer recommends them. It isn't as reversible as they say

The lap band didn't seem like a permanent surgery and I couldn't imagine having to live 20+ yrs with it in me. Plus I've noticed that most end up having to get revised to something different. I didn't want the gastric bypass because of the malabsorption and the dumping. If I want to enjoy a cookie or something with sugar, I don't want to be in pain. I felt like the sleeve will have me eating like a normal skinny person (small portions of food). Also I didn't want to have to take tons of Vitamins or have constant Iron infusions. Plus my surgeon said that he's removed more than he's put in and he prefers not to do them.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
