Considering Taking The Plunge

Recommended Posts

Hi Everybody!

I've been thinking hard about this.......maybe too hard my brain hurts!

I originally had an appointment with Dr. Craig Taylor at the OClinic North Sydney and booked myself in for the band on October 15th 2012 (not quite sure why, I went in wanting the sleeve). After trawling the internet and forums about the band I completely flipped out and cancelled the surgery (I know Im a chicken)

I've been reading a little more about the sleeve and would much prefer it, but at the same time is scares the hell out of me! If I'm going to go ahead it won't be until April next year, not because of any waiting lists or lack of funds, but I just need to give myself time to come to terms with what I'm going to be doing and I don't have much option for leave at the moment.

I'd like to ask a couple of questions, I've read all the answers in other threads, but I NEED to ask these questions myself if that makes any sense? Here we go:

1. Was the pain really bad, I mean moaning groaning on the verge of tears pain?

2. Was there nausea, how long? (This scares me the most I HATE nausea!!!)

3. How long till you were back at work? Do you really need only 2 weeks?

4. Did you all have feeling of anxiety to the point you though about backing out?

5. At what point do you start feeling normal again (food & Energy wise)

6. Did anyone go to Dr. Craig Taylor?

I will thank everyone in advance and I will be planning to stick around until surgery if/when I decide to have it.

I'm so glad I have found some aussies!!!!

Pain was excrutiating, worse than child birth because it is constant...only being completely still helped....and they won't allow you to be still...so be prepared for that! Some people don't have that kind of pain, I read.

As for the nausea, mine wasn't bad, and was easily treated by using the tongue dissolving tabled and patch behind the ear.

I'm 10 days out and if I had a job, would not be able to go back.

I don't know about feeling normal....I do know I am out of the massive amounts of pain, and able to walk around...hunched, guarded, and slowly, but that's a significant improvement from the torture I felt.

No anxiety for me...though I spent countless hours talking with God about it and countless months exercising and preparing for it...but NOT for the bypass at all!

Make sure your nurses take care of you and do not let you lay in a stretcher in the hall, laid back...because they did that to me and my lungs were partway collapsed and I have asthma and my lungs got worse. My quality of care was quite lacking. And...get the druvgs! Make sure those nurses don't lapse on your meds, and that they help you get a boost up in your bed, or whatever you need.

I was sleeved 8/27

Pain was no big deal. Well controlled in hosp and then took liquid pain med at home for several days. Not much nausea and none with meds in hospital. I was anxious but never thought of backing out. After 2 weeks I started to feel GREAT!! And back to myself. I took 3 weeks off from work. This 3rd week was do nice@ going for walks, out doing errands. You can go back to work in 2 weeks but the 4rd week is nice to have.

I have no regrets. Find a very experienced surgeon and a bariattic centrr of excellence. Good luck.

1. I experienced no pain, with exception of a bit of soreness from the gas.

2. I had a bit of nausea for the first hour or two after coming out of anesthesia. After that none

3. I'm a truck driver, I felt good enough to go back to work almost immediately. But I chose to stay ome for a bit because I didn't want to mess with the post-op diet while on the road.

4. I am one of hose people that never stress anything, but yes, I did have times before the surgery when I questioned this decision. Honestly, if you weren't nervous then you would be an alien.

5. I felt great, never really felt abnormal

I had very minimal pain. I was surprised at how little discomfort there was. I was only nauseated for a couple hours after surgery and for the three hour car ride home. I went back to working 12 hour shifts after ten days ( just made sure I didn't do any lifting). Never thought about backing out. I was anxious the first couple weeks, worrying about developing a leak and other complications. I have had a great recovery. I would do it again in a heartbeat to feel the way I currently feel.

Hi Mimz

I had no pain and nil nausea. I was in hospital in Brisbane for 2 days and once home didn't even need a panadol.

I could of gone back to work after 1 week but as I already had 2 weeks booked I just kept with the planned leave.

After 4 weeks I was eating pretty much normal food and my sleeve tolerates anything.

If you join us on the Attention - Australian Sleevers I'm sure you will find someone through Dr Taylor. That thread is predominately the one is Aussies connect by and they are a great bunch of people.

My only regret is I didn't get my sleeve earlier. I researched for a year and can honestly say it is the best decision I have ever done

Every bodies pain is different, and some have nausea and some don't. Part of my process was to have a shrink dr interview and make sure you are mentally capable of handling surgery. What is your main reason for wls? What is your BMI? How is your overall health? It is my experience that some people don't follow the post diet , because they don't have will power and sabotage themselves , over eating and not giving your body time to heal will cause problems . I was back at work in 6 days , just no heavy lifting! Hardest thing for me was dealing with head hunger not physical hunger. But those cravings pass with time . The first couple of weeks after surgery was hardest for me, but it's getting better and easier each day!

Make a list of things you can do if you lose weight, you will be surprised how bad you want to have it done!

I was sleeved by him 5 weeks ago.

Pain was bearable. After day 2 I was only taking Panadol and took nothing after discharge on day 5.

Nausea only for the first 2 days and I put that solely down to the painkillers because as soon as I stopped them, I stopped feeling sick.

I was anxious, but I knew I was doing the right thing. I made a will, gave my parents the details of my life insurance and super and just went for it.

I took 10 days off work and was back to full duties as a bar tender in a leagues club straight away. No dramas.

I can't remember the other questions, but I'd very strongly recommend the mater hospital. They were all AMAZING!!!

I feel normal now. I still have 3 weeks left of soft foods then onto full solids, but I have heaps of energy, I feel amazing

2 months ago I was a size 18. Today I bought a pair of size 12 work pants that fit me fantastically.

Good luck.

My BMI is 39 and have been diagnosed with Optic disc swelling (Swelling behind the eyes). I was advised to lose weight, I have been overweight all my life and have been capable of losing it in the past, but was never able to maintain it. My Neurologist advised that I look into WLS as that could resolve the eye issues (this swelling can lead to loss of sight!), it's been a very hard and agonising descision for me, I'm not scared of the surgery itself or the pain and can stick to a diet no problems, just can't keep it off.

I have two young children and hubby. He is so supportive and says he will support me whatever I decide, I'm just frightened of that 1-2% that I will be the one with major problems, but then again having this extra weight is causing me more problems that will only get worse if I don't do something about it. This won't be my first surgery either, I've had 2 caeserians, a gallbladder removed, a pin in my broken finger and a nose surgery for a deviated septum, I can deal with pain.........

I just want to be healthy for myself and my family, I hate having no self control and always being hungry. This is SO not about the way I look, it's about the way I feel, I derserve better and so does my family.

I supposed thats all the reaons that I am thinking about the sleeve.

You CANT LIVE LIFE WORRYING ABOUT BEING THE 1-2 % & Bad things that could go wrong . If you have a Great surgeon and a Great proven nutrition plan, and follow it to T, I believe your chances of problems will be slim to none! Alot of problems with this type of surgery are "self inflicted" We take chances everyday ! IF ANYBODY has EATING disorders most of their life, to me it was a NO BRAINER! Be thankful that you have a supporting husband , which will make it much easier! Take a long hard look at your children and things that you can do for and with them if you are healthier, be a good example for them and maybe they will learn from you and you will maybe prevent them future struggles! I SUGGEST YOU DO IT AND DONT LOOK BACK! IM SOOOOOO GLAD I DID!

You are so right shane! That's what I'm telling myself now, I DO want to be that good example and I DO want to prevent a future of struggles for them.

Heck my chance of getting in a car accident is 1 in 75 and I take that chance every day! Yep I actually googled it LOL!

Hi Mimz!

I'm 12 days post-op so all these answers are coming fresh!

1. Pain was relatively minor. Some discomfort stemming more from the drips and inability to sleep on my tummy (which I'm back to doing now no problem). My wounds have healed beautifully and cause me no pain (just itchiness from the healing!)

2. No nausea. I did experience it a bit about 5 days post op but have now realised that was more lightheadedness, due to not having enough Protein. I've rectified that in my diet and am nausea free (I am notoriously weak stomached; I get nauseous sleeping on air mattresses)

3. My surgery was Thursday 6th and I went back Thursday 13th. However, I was totally fine by Monday and was contemplating going back earlier (partly because I was bored out of my brain. Usually when I'm bored, I eat, so that was a new experience!)

4. I was never anxious. Odd considering I suffer with anxiety and depression. But I was so focused on how my life was going to change for the better that I didn't have time to get anxious. Best thing I did was have the surgery because even though I've only lost 8kgs so far my self-confidence is on the rise and my daily anxiety receding!

5. I feel SO much more energy now. Pre-op, I was a massive napper. I always felt lethargic and planned my weekends around being able to have a nap mid-afternoon. I even used to go into the spare office at work and sleep the whole of my hour lunch break. I haven't had a nap since surgery. As food regular food, not there yet but I'm cool with that, especially watching the number on the scales go down!

6. I'm in Perth so no.. My surgeon was fantastic though and the aftercare is beyond belief!

I cannot thank you all enough for your replies and positivity! I went to a seminar last night and saw a surgeon that has had it done himself by a collegue!!! Very impressed and he was a big fan over the sleeve.

I have decided to book in with him. But thank you all very much once again!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
