8 Weeks Of This Leak And I'm About To Go Crazy.need Help From Other Leaders !

I had my surgery on July 10th and discovered I had a leak on July 15th was rushed to the ER . I was then put in ICU for 5 days cuz I was septic. I spent the next 4 weeks in the hospitAL on TPN saline and 4 antibiotic and 2 drains. I got to start drinking and they next day try some yogurt everything was staying out of the drain .so I was allowed to go home on a Monday and did great till Thursday when I was drinking purple protein and my drain turned purple. Got in to see the doctor on Friday did a leak test and I watched it myself leak. I was then admitted for 2 more weeks and still leaked so I was sent home with pic lines and home healthcare . I am having such a problem with allergy drainage and horrible dry mouth and nothing works. Everyone I have seen healed In 4 weeks or so but I am double . It got so bad this weekend I started snicking ice and sucking on it . Can anyone give me advice that has been through this, I have 4 kids to take care of and my poor husband and family are wore out.

I am really praying hard for you as i don't know what to tell you. I have 3 children and have not had my surgery yet. Stuff like this really scares me. I am praying that my surgery goes smoothly as we are to 2 parent working household. I will keep you in my prayers. I can't imagine going to the hospital for so long.... Stay strong and don't give up....

I have stuck with it to a T for

8 weeks but when ur mouth gets so dry u throw up but one piece of Ice keep u from it. I told my doctor about it too. And he said won't tell me to do it or not to do it ! I appreciate all the prayers and well wishes but please don't down me for some ice. I really am looking for some advice from anyone who had been through this or know some one who has . I may start looking for a second opinion from another doctor soon.

I'm sorry,,I wasn't downing you. I did have a leak as well,,I was just trying to encourage you..sorry it didn't come off the way I meant it. You just said you were sneaking ice,,if your doctor says it's ok,,then by all means whatever makes you comfortable and is ok for you to do. I know how important it was to not have a single drop in my stomach while healing. I too was on tpn with a pic line and antiobiotics,,home healthcare..the whole bit so I do know what you are going through.

Peacequeen, you are always so helpful and sweet. Your posts are always caring. I'm glad you are doing better from your leak. :)

I had a sleeve done in December and was in the hospital till March. I had a leak, I was septic, I had chest tubes, I had strep on my spleen , got C-Diff due to my antibiotics, I had it all. First of all, I can't give you medical advice, only your doctor can do that, I can only tell you what they did for me. They put a stent in via an endoscopy to cover the leak. That one slipped, and they put in a second one on top of the first one. I was exteremely nasueous, but eventually it did heal. I was not able to do anything by mouth until they knew the leak was healed and they verified that by a CAT scan. I sucked on sponge sticks dipped in iceand cold water. It did suck. It was the worst time of my life. I went home on TPN and by then was allowed very small amounts of liquid and BOOST protein drink. My progression of my diet was very slow I was on clear liquids for a month even after the leak was healed. Then I progressed very slowly to a blended diet, and eventually to a soft diet.I did not get to a general diet until almost June. I am praying for you, but I am here to tell you that you will get through this and it will be OK in the end. I have lost 90 poundso far and have some residual pain in my left lung and lower abdomen that I probably will live with for the rest of my life. However, I can walk without being out of breath, I feel much better and I am getting healthier every day. I am confused as to why you are out of the hospital if you still have an active leak, but that's again up to your doctor. I would like to tell you that in spite of evrything I've been through I would do it again, it was worth it, in spite of the complications, since I think I will live longer and have a better quality of life. If you do not feel you are getting the care that you need, then consider a second opinion. Find a bariatric center of excellence and go have your case reviewed. It's a long road ahead, but you will make it. I have you in my thoughts and prayers. Ask me any other questions that you have.

Ohhh so sorry you're dealin wih this. I haven't had surgery yet but I do have experience with such complications from removing my gall bladder. Leaks- stents- MRSA- pancreatitis and a very long time in the hospital so I do feel for you. I'm familiar with having home health and pic lines etc and that was the pits!!!

A second opinion isn't a bad idea if you honestly think your doc isn't competent enough. I feel, though, that this probabaly isn't the case and surely s/he must be consulting with others too? I would ask if you haven't already.

It does seem long for you to be dealing with this. I'm sorry f this is a dumb question but did they go in and re staple/suture at all or are they addressing it by hoping it heals? Just wondering and if not- why would they not try that? Maybe they did.

You will get better- what have they told you lately as prognosis and treatment planning?

May God send you the strength and healing u need love .

Cheers

Parris

@Justine13: The stomach is a very friable tissue, so they cannot go back in and re staple or resuture. I found that out through my experience. It has to heal on its own. It's unfortunate but true...
