Im at a point were I don't wanna see my surgeon because in extremely angry at little progress. After six months the weight loss slows drastically....ok great I haven't started to loose drastically yet. I feel like a failure seriously do. What can one do?

No one should feel like they have failed. 40 plus pounds in 5 months is a lot. We would never have lost that much on our own. Be happy it's 40 plus pounds gone and not 40 plus pounds added. Even if you only lose 2lbs in a month be happy :D that is 2 lbs closer to where you want to be.

I'm a bit over 5 months and down 55, it may be slim to some but there r a lot of factors to consider. From your SW to calories and Protein and Water intake and exercise. As long as u r losing u will succeed, trust me, I had to learn the hard way, I'm now 40 pounds from goal and very excited, u should be too!

Look your weight loss is fantastic!! 45 pounds you will never see again!! Can you tell us what you are eating/how much now? Maybe you can tweek your menu a bit to get your weight loss moving faster. I really eat very low carb/high Protein and stick to 600-700 calories a day. I walk alot, about 1 1/2 hours a day. I do agree that the first 6 months are the optimum weight loss time(from all that I have read) so for me I am trying to be very vigilant with my diet so that I CAN lose alot the first 6 months.

It seems to me that it only gets more and more discouraging. Im 6months out heading towards my 7th, and I am only about 56lbs down. I have had stall after stall. Its frustrating because now im probably not gonna lose very much more. I have hit my 6 months. If I would have known I might have gone with the gastric. It just seems a bit unfair that there's no medical answer why some loose faster then others. I'd like some pointers on what I can do to pick up the pace if its possible.

Actually there is and its pretty simple; eat at a caloric deficit and you will lose weight. If you are not losing it means your metabolism has taken a beating, your BMR and your RMR has lowered down probably into the low 1000 calories. Overtime you have went from eating very few calories, 500-600 1month postop, with a BMR close to 3000cal per day to around 1000cal at 5 months postop and your BMR has dropped down to around 1200cal, thus why you are not losing. Your not losing because you are eating at a very small caloric deficit each day. The above figures have you losing at 1month postop, 5lbs per week. The above figures also show losing only 1lbs every 17days, 5 months postop. Those numbers are just examples but I bet they are pretty close to whats going on with members who are not losing.

People talk about breaking stalls by eating more. It works because they eat more for a couple days. Their metabolism picks up increasing their BMR and RSR. They go back to eating as usual and lose a few pounds because of their increased metabolism/caloric deficit. Its easy to say I broke my stall because I upped my calories but its much more important to your overall success to understand why/how you broke the stall.

Members who are losing quickly are going above and beyond what your doctors minimum requirements are. They are researching and implementing techniques to lose quicker, finding out what works for them and how their body responds to certain practices . 50g of Protein might be what your DR prescribed but thats really not a lot. 64oz of Water might be whats recommended but most members losing quickly will drink 64oz of Water during their daily workout... its not really a lot of water. You DR tells you to start walking, why not hit the gym and lift weights a couple times a week... how about 15+miles of walking/jogging/running per week? Walking around your block for a half hour 3 times per week might burn 400 calories all week long. Thats roughly 1600 calories a month... not even half a pound loss. Get on an elliptical for 45mins at a steady pace for 45mins every day and thats 600+calories a day, 18000 per month and over 5lbs loss.

Tweak your diets and change it up from time to time. Challenge and push yourself in the gym. Work hard towards a decent size caloric deficit and you will lose weight. Its plain and simple. You can make every excuse in the book but if your not losing it simply means you are not eating at a caloric deficit. If you think you should be losing because of the 800 calories your eating daily, it means your metabolism is shot and you need to figure out a way to increase your BMR and RMR.

My Doctor told me from the beginning that the surgery is considered a success if we lose 60% of our excess weight. And the rest will be due to our hard hard work! For me 60% of the 150 pounds I need to lose is 85 pounds! And I am well on my way to meeting that goal! I know I am going to have to figure out how to make it all the way to my personal goal of 150 on my own!! The sleeve will still continue to be an excellent tool to help me though!!

If I go by the percentages I still haven't lost 60% of what I needed to lose. Would it be fine to go back to basics? Im not sure. But at this point I really do want to try, but im seriously discouraged.

I agree with a lot of the posters, you are doing well and should be proud of what you have accomplished so far.

If you feel you could be doing better or want to try, then make sure to track everything you are eating, either on your own or using something like My Fitness Pal. Sometimes it is a matter of mixing up your routine a little, adding/removing carbs or calories. This will also let your NUT track what you're doing and give advice accordingly.

Don't get discouraged, try to get motivated! I know, easy to say but what is the alternative - Don't let old habits win, you are stronger than that.

Good luck!!

It's easy to get discouraged when you feel like you are putting in the effort and not losing, but hang in there and you will figure it out. I would suggest count, measure, and weigh, and maybe try some of the other poster's suggestions.

I'd like to say that I'm not sure there is really a 6 month window of opportunity....I'm not that far yet, but from reading what successful vets have to say, I think we have a permanent tool that will help us for the long haul. When you look at the stats from some of them, they lost just a few pounds a month for a lot months, and they did get to goal. We can, too! Good luck!

I think I read somewhere that you continue to lose up through two years, probably very slowly for a good part of it, but a loss is a loss and I will take that over gaining any day!!

Here is a quote from a study published in 2010 about the sleeve : The average percentage of excess weight loss after surgery was 24 percent after one month, 36 percent after 3 months, 50 percent after 6 months, 57 percent after 9 months and 60 percent after 12 months. The study demonstrates that it can be used as a single-stage operation for patients not eligible for weight loss surgeries, as well as patients who are eligible for lap band or gastric bypass surgery. Sleeve gastrectomy offers as much weight loss as gastric bypass surgery with a decreased potential for complication.

You can lose weight with or without the sleeve @ 6,12,18 or 24 months, even years down the road.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
