About One Year And Feel Like Failure

Recommended Posts

I know I should be happy I am down from 276.6 to 197 lbs. Is this around what other people have lost at this time frame? it seems like my scale is stuck for the last month. Does anyone have suggestions for kick starting my body again?

I'm only two weeks out, so I'm afraid I'm not much help. I have read a lot of posts regarding stalls saying go back. To basics to bust the stall. Many suggest going back to a liquid diet for a short time and channging up your exercise routine. Good luck to you!

Are you tracking your food on a program like My Fitness Pal? You should be limiting your carbs and fat, eating only healthy fats. Your carbs should come from dairy and veggies. Also, make sure you're drinking a lot of Water.

Are you exercising? People say they walk a certain amount of miles every day. If they're doing that, they should be walking very quickly with some hills, and keep up the heart rate for at least 30 min. You can take your pulse, to make sure it's in the aerobic zone.

I can only speak for what's been successful for me: Next to no sugar, lots of Protein, low carbs, and plenty of exercise, specifically lifting weights. I work out 3-4 times a week with a combination of cardio and weights and I'm very happy with my results. I see that the weight loss is now slowing down but it hasn't stopped. I'll be at 6 months on September 7th and I'm just a few pounds away from 100 pounds lost.

Since when is losing 79 pounds and keeping it off failure?

If you aren't losing at the pace you'd like, but you are active and adhering to a healthy diet, you need to accept that you might just be a slower loser. I thought I'd be down 107 pounds by nine months out...it took me 17 months to hit goal.

If you're not already, you need to track your food. Without changing your current diet, track every single bite you put in your mouth for three days. Then, shave 20% off your calories and return to a healthier balance (I do 40% Protein, 30% carbs and 30% fat) and if you don't lose weight after two weeks of doing that, come back and ask for help again.

Odds are good you've simply fallen into denial or gotten complacent about your diet. It's normal - I think a lot of us that take longer to lose the weight do this at some point. Pick it up and get back to basics. If you've dropped your Protein shake, reconsider. It's a great way to up your Protein totals for the day without adding a ton of extra calories. I always aim for 90+ grams a day. And be sure you're drinking Water between meals and not drinking a lot of excess calories (or diet soda, which isn't good for anyone) without realizing it.

Diet alone should help you jump start, but adding in new exercise will certainly help. Consider finding something you can look forward to doing as a daily physical activity. I won't lie, I have trouble with this myself.

There is no reason you can't reach your goal weight in your second year post op. Your sleeve is as big as it's getting. It's the same tool it was a year ago - so if you buckle down and get real with yourself you can reach your goal this year.

I am 3 1/2 months out and I have lost 66 lbs. Protein is the answer. If your weight loss slows down, pick up on your protein intake. I try to atleast get 60 grams in a day. I can tell when I dont drink it because the scale dont move but when I do... I can loose atleast 5 lbs a week easy.

what other people have lost at this time frame?

kiddo

you have done terrific this past year.

being here this past year you know, we all are different to how much weight we've lost, how long it takes to lose, we're all different

no comparisons allowed ^_^

you've lost 79 lbs - now standing tall in onederland, how great is that? doesn't matter how long it took you to do this, the fact you are here now is the great thing

you will get over this stall. it will happen

don't get depressed - things will turn around - and one more time you will be jumping around healthier and happier, and loving life again. ;)

your glass is half full not half empty

God grant me patience, just hurry up about it :)

good luck :)

I have a feeling based on my track record that I will be a slower loser than many here. I've just got to prepare myself and try not to compare --- that is where the disappointment comes in. Think about it -- if you had lost 79 pounds in a vacuum with no one else to compare to you would be ecstatic right?

Maybe I'm just in a bad mood today but the subject for this thread makes me mad. I saw the subject "feel like a failure" and got scared that the sleeve might have failed someone. Then, I read that you've lost 90 lbs. On what planet is that a failure? Give me a break.

I was talking to my surgeon about stalling or Plateauing and he said, during those times it is very important to really exercise and get your resting heart rate up to burn more calories and jump start your metabolism to start kicking the weight off. Try not to get discouraged and do your best to stay active and maintain your diet.

Best of luck!

Hey there!

It's going to be all right. I don't know how many times I see people saying they didn't reach their goal by 1 year post op and I remember that the sleeve studies out there show people hit their best excess weight loss at 18-24 months post op. A LOT of sleevers take that long to hit goal and the statistics prove it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that! As long as the weight comes off---that is what matters! Don't be discouraged. It's not a magic pill--it's a work in progress.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
