3 Days Post-Op, Can I Take A Crushed Tums Or Mylanta?

My heartburn is horrible. My doctor prescribed prevacid but not until a week post operative. I am unable to sleep or keep Water down. Can I take Tums (crushed) or Mylanta?

Thank you!

crush the tums if its really bad. I would follow up on monday with your doctor

I TOOK THE PREVACID DAILY It helped

oh hold on, you had surgery this week??

umm call your doctor

ask if you can take the prevacid earlier, I took prilosec right off the bat, per doctors order.

I took Pepcid right away. Maybe your doctor will prescribe that or the Prilosec Iliana says she took.

I agree with this who said "call your surgeon". Don't take anything over the counter without first checking with your surgeon. Prevacid and liquid Zantac have worked wonders for my heartburn. Best of luck!

I spoke with the doctor on call this morning and he said to empty the prevacid capsul into a ounce of water or protein shake....so far it has helped!

Hooray! So glad you found relief.

That's great news !

Tums are chewable so u can take that. The paper from my doctor suggests Tums for the calcium benefits too.

Prevacid is crap in my opinion. A few people here and there like it but many of us have posted that it didn't help one bit. I was able to take Nexium immediately post op and switched to generic omeprazole (Prilosec) within a month or two post op.

If you need immediate relief Tums smoothies (the ones that turn to powder almost immediately) will be fine, but they will only treat the symptoms until you're on a PPI.

Cheri-

How will I be able to tell if the prevacid isn't working? So far I have been heartburn free, but I definitely want to keep a close eye on it.

Thank you!

Was released with my PPI with instructions to start taking it my first full day at home, which was Thu (surgery on Tue).

I'm not sure why your surgeon delays starting, so you really should call and ask.

In terms of our stomachs themselves, you should be able to take the medication, even without crushing it.

Prevacid is Lansoprazole and generally not considered one of the "better" PPIs to take. I've had the best luck with Omeprazole. My Rx is 2x daily. I take 1x daily if needed, or 1x every 2 days if I'm feeling OK. I will take a sip or two of Mylanta if I'm on the verge. PPIs are not getting good press lately and I'm trying to research more before I begin to rely on a daily dosage.
