My Advice To All Newly Post-Op Sleevers...

back to check in, jimmy! today was my first day weight training! i went when the gym was not packed so i didn't feel stupid looking at the instructions and the body parts the machine works. lol i worked my upper body...it wasn't bad...i didn't realize my shoulders were so weak but i have arthritis in them. i think i was lifting to light...i have in my mind if i'm not in pain, about to pass out, out of breath, etc. i'm not doing anything...i've been like that my whole life. i don't think my workout was that affective today so i would like to go back tomorrow and work my upper again...what are your thoughts? i did 3 sets, 10 reps...is this enough? here is my questions: should i be lift in the full range motion? or pulsing? what's the difference in the results? currently i'm not just looking to tone but i'm also looking to build muscle to lose weight. i remember reading some where...you're supposed to lift heavy to tear the muscle down so it can rebuild...so here was the routine....12 count heavy, 10 count heavy, 8 count heavy, as many as you can easy. something like that. anyway, the point was to get your muscle that you're working to feel weak like a noodle. have you ever heard of that? can i tone while lifting heavy? how long would you say an average weight lifting workout should take, when you're working 1 section of your body i.e. upper? for what i want to accomplish is 2 days a week sufficient for what i'm trying to accomplish? i was thinking tues. (upper) and thurs. (lower). what feeling should i be feeling after a good weight training session? i still can't bring myself to pay for a trainer until after i get my bills from the surgery. lol probably am not going to want to fork out the money then either...lol i'll see how well i do on my own. if i keep asking you questions i'm going to have to put you a check in the mail...lol

    No Hair Loss?

It would be super helpful if the ones that DID NOT experience hair loss could provide some insight on why they think they dodged the bullet. Did you have any complications? Did you get the recommended Protein in daily? Did you lose weight fast, slow or gradually? Did you take any supplements? Did you do anything special? I'm sure this information would be appreciated by ALL!

    Anyone In Stl?

@aligayle Yes! everything is going pretty good for me! i thought i was in a stall but i'm just at a crawl. i'm getting all my protein in and haven't been exercising like I want. I tire after about 20-30 minutes. i will attest i have not got all my energy back but keep telling myself it is still early yet. it is TOM for me right now so my cramps/flow is a bit different but i'm surviving.

    July 18Th Sleevers!

ok, i'm not stalled just at a crawl...down one more pound today...i'm at 196. also i forgot my body was preparing for TOM..ugh @hauntie - no pain for me but remember those are deep wounds so there may be still some healing, upset nerve endings, etc. all my incisions are healed for the most part but the largest one is still a small hole that i wipe with peroxide twice a day. if it is too bothersome i would give your doc/nurse a call but personally i think it just need a little more time. i have not seen some fellow 18th-ers post in a while...praying all is well.

    Have You Ever Wondered...?

Well I guess that's make us both weird. I asked my nurse during my follow up but she said it would be difficult & she didn't think she could get a pic. Honestly, I don't think she wanted to take the time to get it. She suggested I google pic. WTH! REALLY! I just rolled my eyes & said whatever! She did tell me my doc used a size 34 bougie. I'm like I would have loved to see a pic. If my curiousity keeps poking at me I will request it later. I'm thinking it should be part of our med records. You think?

    What Do You Do

Do something to distract your mind i.e. go for a walk, work out, log on - read some post, call a friend. I haven't had that problem yet but I know that helped me pre-op. Stay focus...u can do it!

    Belly Band

I'm also in search of one but am getting a bit confused as i research. i'm not looking to wear something everyday all day...i'm not concern with rolls...what i am looking is something to work out in and train/reshape by body(mid section). so i'm torn between a c-section garment or a exercise waist slimming belt. my stomach giggles at Spanx. i tried the walmart slimming belt preop and it was too snug. i said i was going to go to sport authority and see what they have. any ideas are greatly appreciated.

    Increase Protein?

Ok, i'm going to jump in here but will be really vague as i can't give you all the scientific facts. I'm basing my theory on years of researching weight loss, working out, etc. To answer your question: I SHOOT for 80 and if i fall short that's ok but i AT LEAST get in 60! with you being 3 wks out i would assume you should be getting more Protein than 40g UNLESS you're having problems with keeping thinks down. (you didn't mention that.) I PERSONALLY believe increase your protein intake would make a difference, how big of a difference i don't know but it definitely worth a try. WHY? 1. protein helps you stay fuller longer...so you have less chance of eating slider foods that offer NOTHING. 2. protein is harder to digest/breakdown so the harder your digestive systems works to break it down the more calories your body burns. 3. protein is the #1 source for muscle repair/maintenance so more muscle = more calories burned & fat burned. 4. muscle was cut during the surgery and protein will help repair this 5. our body has been through a trauma and when you're body is trying to heal it is pulling protein from anywhere it can. HTH

    Knee Brace

Funny...pre-op my knee started giving me problems from the transition of sitting on the couch to walking/running EVERY DAY! Let me tell ya, since l've left the hospital I've babysat this knee more than my stomach from surgery! It has given me the blues! I would try a local med store, rehab facility or the internet. I grabbed a sleeve from walgreens. I'm going to push it because I think my knee is just seeking attention. lol its going to get some attention all right...just not the kind its seeking. lol Hope you find what you're looking for!

My Advice To All Newly Post-Op Sleevers...

I agree and hear you LOUD and clear it is too early. you'er absolutely right, execution is KEY and that's why i want to start with the machines to get my form correct. I will not watch TV, you're right again. GREAT INFORMATION! Not sure what intermediate weight would be? i'm guessing it would depend on the amount of sets/reps i do? maybe i will start with at least 10 depending on the muscle(s) i'm working on. can you point me to a good website that explain the different machines and describe the area/muscle that machine works? Can you tell me what areas to concentrate on? i saw you mentioned core...can you elaborate on how to use weight training for your core? I will google/research but just some questions i have. You've been a HUGE help!

    July 18Th Sleevers!

GREAT JOB chris!!!! go for my 1st post op visit tomorrow...BYE BYE DRAIN!!! i'm super happy about that! its more of a nuisance than anything...it makes me feel handicap...i know weird but it does...i guess it's just in the way and i'm conscious about it so i'm cautious with my movement, etc. maybe its a mind thing...who knows. i have a few questions for my surgeon but i will see if i have enough guts to ask when the time come...lol -what size bougie did he use? just curious -is there a pic of my stomach i can see/have? -how often should i have BM's? at what consistency? (sorry) lol he prescribed me stool softeners but i haven't had to really use them...there has been a couple of days i did not have a BM. BONUS QUESTION - was my liver fat? he will probably say "LADY DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY LIVERS I SEE A DAY...I DON'T REMEMBER & IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN TOO FATTY I PERFORMED THE SURGERY!" LMBO no i'm just kiddin' he's really down to earth and cares. I'VE LOSS 13 libs OF ME SINCE SURGERY!!! and have 75 more to go! WHOOT! WHOOT! update: -my taste buds have not swayed! -my appetite is down - i get hungry maybe 1 a day (don't get me wrong i still have desires from commercials/thoughts/sound of things lol) -my drainage is less and clearer -i have discomfort/itching in my drain incision -i have mild pain at the site of the incision over my belly button -i think the heat outside takes a toll on me (i feel faint/shortness of breath/sweaty even once inside air conditioned stores.) -HOT FLASHES!!!! what's up with that?! lol -slept the whole night for the 1st time last night -resting better - each day i sleep longer and longer -work out 30 min. twice a day - just treadmill...walking -if i had to guess i would say 4 oz. is my limit -Chike is STILL by far my FAV Protein shake!!!! -getting all my protein & liquids in! -i FINALLY set a goal weight! 125!!!!!! wish me luck! -burps/passing gas no problem...no gas pain also not excessive thank God because i've read people that does it all the time...hehehe -happy to report my Panera Soup experiment is going ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!!! i can't believe i was trying to put myself through that torture. lol

My Advice To All Newly Post-Op Sleevers...

big THANKS OP!!!! i am a week post-op, i have about 75 more lbs to lose, i walk/bike/jog pre and post op, 39 yrs old, a mother of 2, fairly active just never been consistant. what do you suggest? heavy less reps? light lifting more reps? how many times a week? how many times a day? i'm not really good with individual weights so I will probably start going back to the gym to use the weight machines. I do have individual weights at home up to 15 lbs. would you suggest using while watching tv, perhaps? in addition to going to the gym. i get my drain out tomorrow so I will start doing weights this weekend! OR do you think that's too soon? I'M FEELING GREAT THO! getting all my Protein in! YAY! I know right...my invoice is in the mail, huh? see....you should have never said you were a trainer...now you've got a stalker. lol j/k thanks in advance for all your help!
