I also wanted to mention, which I forgot to! That I also had surgery in TJ with Ponce de leon and know tons of very happy, like me, people who had a great time in Mexico!

I even went to Ensenada to the Buffadora (sp?) and markets. It was a blast!

Educate yourself as to which areas are experiencing problems. Most of them are near the Texas border...and most of the surgeons that people go to are near the California border, not that area.

Who did your surgery if you don't mind me asking?

Surgery was done by Dr. Mario Almanza (http://hospitaljerusalem.com.mx/bariatric-sleeve-gastrectomy.php).

If your parents are worried about Mexico, then go to Cancun. It's a great vacation destination. I had my surgery there and took the family. Everyone had a great time and I had no worries at all! I used Dr.Verboonen and have had no problems what so ever!

"If I can't even drink the Water, why would I have surgery there?"

I'm guessing your parents are referring to the news that the Zeta cartel has been making since... probably last fall. There was a blow-up, but things have gotten a lot more low key. But AFAIK the major conflicts with the Zeta cartel are not in the same area as the hospitals. I'm pretty sure those routes aren't highly prized drug trafficking venues.

^ just best guess from a midwesterner who hasn't crossed the Mex border in a solid 5 years.

25 years ago I went to Cancun for my honeymoon....my mother was convinced I would be kidnapped and never seen again...and this was BEFORE the lovely internet, 24 hour news, "Nancy Grace" and even cable tv for our area.

I am a mother. i would worry about my daughter (a solder) overseas no matter where she went (and she can kick butt). I believe the state department has travel advisories posted when there are things to truly watch out for, not just what the media portrays. Like anywhere you're not familiar with ... common sense. And even with all the media portrayal..when was the last time you heard of a "fat chick murdered in driveby in TJ?" You KNOW the media would LOVE that! (of course, now that I've said it I 'll probably be the next headline lol)

Like others have said, you can get killed doing anything, including not to anything. :) I will be going to TJ alone. My biggest concern is the Water. (and not the media portrayal of shark attacks in the Water lol)

I leave for Tijuana tomorrow to Dr Almanza. I am nervous as anyone can be and I am so glad to find this forum for self pay Mexico .. I seriously need to hear from people that have been to Tijuana and say it is clean and sanitary .. I was also told the anesthesiologist will be in the room during my surgery the entire time.. is this fact for those of you that went to DR Almanza? I am a smoker - quitting and slowing down of course, but I have breathing problems, and that is truly my biggest worry right now., any other smokers? ex smokers that quit just before surgery?

Ya, I think it all depends on where you are crossing. I live in New Mexico, and I know the people south of our border have gone freaking bugnuts. AZ border is pretty bad too. The dentist my dad used to go to down there was kidnapped and to my knowledge never found.

Sorry- not to scare you, but it seems everyone going to the baja end of Mexico are not having trouble. If it were closer this way, I'd seriously advise against it. I can see why your family is concerned, but the realtime experiences from people on here should guide you in the right direction and give you a sense of what's what.

Girl my family gave me hell too for deciding on Tijuana, and I'm Mexican... go figure!

All I did was check travel the travel advisories. If they give you the green light to travel, then go for it!!z

I haven't gone yet, not until December but Dr. Kelly will be doing it.

And I feel really confident that everything will go well because..

#1- I haven't heard of anyone not feeling safe, both on this forum and people I know

#2- there aren't any travel advisories for Tijuana. The big places are like Sinaloa and places where the Cartels have strongholds.

Tijuana has such a big American presence (or so I've heard) ,you really wont feel "out of place" if you don't speak Spanish. And plus everyone that has gone was well taken care of.

I'm sure you will be fine wherever you go, whether here or Mexico . I am extremely confident in my decision and if you have any questions just ask! Good luck on your decision! :)

I went to dr Kelly. I never felt unsafe. I actually was worried and had a post before I went too. But Omar was with us everywhere hospital was clean and I felt I got great care. The biggest differences I noticed was less automation at hospital. more handwritten. Less computers.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
