Candle I go for the meeting with the nurse next Tues 8/28.. What happens at that meeting? Then Wed, I go for the presurg testing. I'm a week behind you. Did you go to the Aug meeting on Tues 8/7? The pt who spoke that night was very encouraging, she looked great and gave me the hope that I too will look good and be much healthier after this surgery. I feel the future looks very bright!!! I wish you all the best on Monday, I'll be thinking of you!;)

I thought it Dr. Geiss's office required that it should have been included in all of the pre op testing.

I agree - but it didn't keep me from worrying about it!!

The office seems like a well oiled machine at this point and my boyfriend kept telling me not to fuss over it. I'm a worrier though - and overly meticulous. (For example someone at Dr Geiss's office left me a voice mail this morning that I didn't hear until after the office was closed. All night I've been freaking out wondering why they called. I'm such a mess - lol! )

I saw my PCP today and she gave me a little crap about being over due for a PAP. In the past 6 months I think I’ve seen more doctors than I’ve seen in my whole life - that's the last thing I want to do right now!!

only4me - How's everything going for you? I assume you are on mushies by now and feeling back to normal? (I'm soooo sick of Soup and Protein shakes ALREADY - ugh)

I thought it was a one-on-one thing but it's a group of people being banded around the same time, that just get together with the OR nurse to discuss details. Like what to expect during surgery, what to bring to the hospital, etc. You might get lucky and meet someone being banded on the same day as you - I was the only one with my date there.

Warning - it lasted a LONG time. It was set for 2:45 and we probably didn't get started until closer to 3:30 and quite a few people asked A LOT of questions. I don't think we left until some time after 5:00! (The pre-surgery testing took longer than I expected too - it was about 2 hours. Most of it just waiting around)

I only went to the one required seminar and that was back in March. I didn't find it all that informative but that might just be because I've researched this extensively. I brought my boyfriend, hoping he'd get something out if it but he said he really didn't learn anything I hadn't already told him. 2 older men with the band spoke but they mostly just talked about things specific to their cases. It was kind of weird.

Good luck with everything - suddenly I feel like things are moving really fast!

I just wanted you all to know that you have been a great help to me in my journey to get the lap-band surgery. I have been reading your boards for about a month now and I am almost done with all my mandatory appointments. Just a stress test and upperGI series, then the support meeting and voila....I can sit and wait for the date of my surgery. I am sooooooo excited and wanted to thank you all for the information I have been gathering here. I am being banded by Dr. Geiss and as you confirmed in these boards...I am in very good hands. Thanks again and I hope to meet some of you at the support meeting on September 4th. 1 question....whats the typical wait time from end of appointments to surgery date in Dr. Geiss's office???

notmzperfect,

It was only about a month after the pre-op testing. After all of your testing, and after you get your date you will be scheduled to meet with their OR nurse, June,- you usually meet with her and a group within 2 weeks of surgery date and she goes over everything that will happen from admission on. The you start your pre-op diet, and then surgery. It goes very fast. I am hoping to go on September 4th, but I come in from Suffolk, and I work on Tuesdays, so, I probably will be either late, or wont make it.

Candle- Sorry I didnt get an email stating that there was a post on this thread. By the time you get this you will have had surgery and will be home by now. I hope all is well with you. The first couple of days were a little tough, but I walked alot and kept and icepack on my port for the whole first week. I really felt that it helped with the pain and swelling. So many people comlain of port pain, and I had none at all. So, ice, ice, baby!! Yes, I am on mushies, and I am doing well, at my 2 week post op I was down 21lbs from the time I started the pre-op diet. But I feel very much back to normal. Let me know how you are doing.

I'm one week out of surgery today and doing great!!! Glad to hear you are as well. I haven't really had any pain, finally have been sleeping a little better, and now getting my energy back.

I see Dr Geiss next Monday and hope to get the go-ahead to mushies!!

Can any Dr Geiss people tell me what happens at the 2 week check up?

Will I actually see Dr Geiss or just a PA?

If I still have Steri-Strips will they remove them? (They don't look any where near ready to come off yet)

Will they do another x-ray to check band placement? Will I get to see the x-ray that was done in the hospital?

thanks

Candle- you will see one of the PA's when you go. They will take off the steri-strips and remove any sutures that are present. They wont do an xray at this visit. They didnt show me any xray (I am assuming you mean when they did the florosope the day after surgery)- its mostly post op visit, where she will talk to you about the diet and any concerns you will have. You will be given a six week visit after that visit. ac

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
