Any Long Islanders?

Recommended Posts

I have no idea what my band is called, just that it holds 14CCs- give yourself time to heal- it takes two weeks to feel like yourself again- I guess it is mostly the anesthesia and make sure you are getting enough protein!

Hello dear Candle:

I am so glad to hear how well you are doing. I've followed your progress from the beginning and you've given me inspiration from day one. Heck I know why you don't go to support meetings you'd be way too busy supporting to even get sleep! You are an ideal patient. I am finally getting banded in either February or March...just waiting on insurance approval or disapproval or course but have finally finished all the hurdles and feel so certain now that I want this. I figure I have one more "last supper" anymore and I won't make it to surgery date!@!

Best to all,

Marg

That's really really sweet of you.:rolleyes2:

Be sure to let us know when you have a date. You are in good hands at NYU. (Did you read Fighting Weight? The book Dr Fielding co-wrote with K. Ali)

It's nice to see all the Long Islanders! I'd be interested in hearing more about the J&J band.

Banding on 3/4 with Dr Powers (Dr Geiss's partner). Has anyone been to their support group for banded patients?

Are there any other groups around besides the one Ron runs?

thanks.

Congrats Big Dawg!!! You'll do fine. How long do you have to stay? I was in for less than 24 hours.

ajoneen - I'm sorry, I've never been to the support group. I met Dr Powers when I had my surgery.

How did things go?!

Tell your wife not to be scared. She can stay with you most of the time. The day of the surgery, you go to the registration area (first left after you enter the front door of the hospital). They go over your info., put a band on your arm, and then you sit in a chair and wait (maybe 10 minutes) to be called by someone over at security. This person will take you on the elevator to the holding room in the recovery area.

You'll be given a garment bag to put all your clothes in and shown to a bathroom where you'll change into a gown (it will fit) and an OR hat. The garment bag will be taken to your room and you go into the pre-op area and get weighed and then jump in a bed. At this point, your wife will join you. An anesthesiologist will come to talk with the two of you and then you'll see your surgeon. The RN will start an IV and you'll get an antibiotic through that just prior to going to the operating room (OR).

Once you're taken to the OR, your wife goes to the waiting area just outside the recovery area. When they have you settled in the recovery room, they will bring your wife in to see you and she can stay with you and accompany you when they bring you to your room.

I hope that helps a little?

I had a rough time in the hospital(not medically, emotionally). The last couple of days have been tough for me. Lots of questioning my decision to get the band. But I'm coming to understand that is normal. I'm going to give the support group a try, although Im getting alot of support from LBT.

I just found out that my insurance authorized the surgery as an outpatient and is not going to cover the overnight part. They said the hospital will be eating that cost because they told them it was not covered and I was kept anyways. I wish it was outpatient, I really could have skipped that hospital stay all together. I never want to go back there.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
