I am a pre-op w/ 3 months to go. I just had a question for you post-ops out there.

Are you able to eat corn? How about Beans and nuts? What foods have you had a problem eating?

Thanks!!!

I'm 5 weeks post op and can eat nuts as long as I chew them really well. Haven't tried corn yet. I really haven't had a problem with anything I eat yet! Sometimes I do eat too fast though....old habits die hard I guess.

Yes by now you should be able to tolerate all those foods of course in limited quantites. Corn is higher in starch/sugar so probably not the healthiest veg for losing weight. Nuts are a good source of Protein but high in calories, they make a great snack! I'm also 3 months out and enjoying small amounts of these foods!

I can eat Beans, pureed at first. Last night I ate the whole for the 1st time and they went down great. Everyone is different though. Corn scares me since it is hard to digest. Good luck!

I waited 4 months before eating any of those. My surgeon suggested waiting because the skins or pieces of them can get stuck in your sutures in your stomach and possibly cause an infection.

Okay so you have 3 months until your surgery. Glad to have you here. I waited a few months before in introduced those things. Your surgeon should have a nutritional guide for you. Some surgeons do not want there patients eating nuts or popcorn until at least 6 months out. I ate nuts at 3 months. My post op went: 2 weeks of Clear liquids, 2 weeks of full liquids, 2 weeks of pureed food and finally you get to introduce solids as tolerated.

As was said, corn is not a good choice, but a little bit of otherwise healthy foods are fine later way down the line. Beans are great sources of Protein. Beans are my friend and I ate a fair amount of refried beans during the puree stage. Now any bean and legumes are on the menu -- except for lima beans. I hates them!

The rule for weight loss and for sleevers is Protein first, then maybe a little bit of vegetables and an even a tinier amount of good carbs like quinoa or 1/4 to 1/2 slice of toasted whole wheat. For a long time, you will not have much room at all. Most people and only eat a couple ounces at first and then a six month they are able to eat maybe 4 fl. oz. or 1/2 cup at a time. That's not much room and we need 70-90 grams of protein a day so there is no room to waste on starchy filler.

I eat nuts twice a day, every day, at 3.5 months out. Haven't tried corn, too many carbs and low Protein. Don't eat Beans but never did - they make me uncomfortably gassy.

Thanks guys! All of your input is very helpful! I'm just trying to picture what life is going to be like post-op. I only asked about corn because I love corn on the cob right off the BBQ. Other than Beans, what do you do to get your Protein? I see that many people drink Protein Shakes but I feel a little confused because I would think that the shakes are very filling and there is not much room after surgery. What is the avg amount of a shake that you are able to drink while still getting in adequate protein?

the Protein Shake is something you will be sipping on all day long basically. I started eating solids about a week out without any problems at all. I mostly eat chicken for my Protein but I also have these Protein Shots that I drink if I notice i'm not at my protein intake for the day, they have 40 grams of protein and are cheap! I also buy nuts now and eat those for Snacks, Bolthouse Farms Protein Shakes are good too if you want something different. My nutritionist recommended those to us. I also like string cheese for a snack too, it's high in protein and it fills me up.

The shakes will go right through you pretty fast. The denser Proteins will sit in your stomach much longer. My surgeon wants us off the shakes and getting protein from foods as soon as possible. When I mentioned that I occasionally still have a Protein Shake for Breakfast at almost six months, she was a little annoyed. I still do it anyway because I can make really tasty ones. I don't sip on them throughout the day because I like them fresh out of the blender and cold.

The reason for getting on regular foods is that the Protein Shakes really do not give you everything you need nutritionally (certain amino acids, Vitamins, minerals and fiber) and for the fact that we basically should be not on a liquid diet for long.

I eat tri tip, ribeye, sirloin, fillet mignon, turkey, chicken, ahi tuna, white fish, shellfish, pork, cheese, Greek yogurt, Beans and nuts for protein. I don't like lamb or organ meats. Quinoa is a high protein grain I eat. Lots of calories and carbs, so a 1/4 cup serving usually does it. Treat it like couscous and add feta and cranberries or whatever.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
