Sounds just like the damn lap band. Ugh. Everything had to be slathered in sauce to go down. No eggs, lettuce, or fibrous veggies or fruits, nothing dry. That's just how my band was. I don't want to relive that nightmare anytime soon. I'm freaking out. I'm scheduled for Friday. Not sure if this is the best thing for me anymore.

I had the band for four years-hated every minute of it!! I've been sleeved for three weeks and already love my sleeve. I feel like it is doing exactly what the band should have done.

With the band, I threw up frequently, had intolerable heartburn, and was always hungry. I would just get stuck, not full or even close to satisfied unless I drank while eating to force food through. Kinda defeats the purpose.

With the sleeve, I am totally full/satisfied after small portions. I am having some trouble with dairy, but my dr reminded me that my stomach is like a new baby's and needs to work up to stuff. I think nothing will be totally off limits, but even if a few things are, it will be nothing like the band.

I know this is a big decision for you because I was dead set against it because of my failure with the band. Am I glad u spent so much time on this forum!! This was the best decision EVER!!

I am also a previous lap band. The sleeve is amazing comparing, it is in NO WAY like the band. Its the best thing i have done -- for real - wish i wouldnt have waited as long as i did having the sleeve.

I can tolerate anything really. The only thing i have noticed that might be some intolerance is really heavy ice cream. I can eat frozen yogurt etc and i am fine but heavier fat ice cream (i guess) makes my tummy hurt. Other than that, i havent met anything that didnt agree. :)

I don't like ice cream anyways, so that's ok!

This truly upsets me that there are foods that aren't tolerated. The band failed me due to food intolerance. I wanted to eat eggs, nuts, and fibrous fruits and veggies, but I never could without vomiting. That is why I wanted the sleeve. I didn't want to sit next to the bathroom at every restaurant in case I vomited. The band ultimately had to come out when I got pregnant. It completely closed off due to pregnancy swelling. Even empty, nothing would pass thru. I didn't want to stress now that I might vomit after one bite of the wrong thing. That's just exactly how six months of the band went. Ugh. Am I doing the right thing???

I am a year out and there is nothing I can't eat now. I did have difficulty with few foods at first not making me sick just didn't feel right in my stomach. Now I eat anything I want just in small portions. If something doesn't set well with you just wait a few weeks and try it again, that's what I did anyway.

Apples. Well, at least with their peels. Makes my stomach gurgly and angry. They don't even give any sort of sensation of fullness for me.

I wouldn't say that I've become lactose intolerant, but I can't drink milk like I used to. One, it makes me VERY full. A glass of milk might as well be a meal for me. Two, because it just makes my stomach not sit right. It makes it gurgle and generally unhappy with me.

I am 6 months out. I made sure I followed doctor's orders regarding food progression, Vitamins, Protein, liquids. A little tough at first, but keep your eye on the prize! After 4 months, I could eat what I wanted in much, much smaller quantities. I didn't vomit once. Got uncomfortable with some foods, so I waited to try again. Everyone is different. I had 60 lbs to lose and am now at goal. I love buying all new clothes. I smile when I look at myself in a mirror. I love my sleeve. Well worth what I had to give up-- Stuffing myself because I had no self control. Good luck with your surgery!

I'm almost 3 months post-op, and I seem to be able to eat just about anything. That said, I don't have a ton of variety yet (very little fruits or veges).

The one item I had a horrible time with was a hot dog on the 4th of July. Wowzers did that make me feel yucky! I had this acidic gurgle in the upper part of my stomach, and I got a bit clamy... had to actually lie down the rest of the evening.

Aside from that... I've eaten nuts without any problem, different meats, all kinds of dairy (I seem to do great with non-fat and low-fat dairy products), grilled chicken, even a slice of bacon (yeah yeah, I know!), etc...

Good luck! Everything I've heard, the sleeve is an amazing tool - I know I'm very pleased with mine. Best of luck!!

I should rephrase - none of those foods (except dairy - I am lactose intolerant) are things I CANNOT eat. I can eat all of them. I do, sometimes! But why would I choose to eat a big salad made of iceberg and have loose bowels later? Why would I choose to eat a wrap with tortilla knowing I'll only get two bites in before I feel uncomfortable and full, when I could have half a grilled or toasted sandwich instead?

All of my food goes down easily. I've overeaten only a handful of times in two years and yes, I've had to urp back up those last few bites a few times. But my life is NOTHING like what I've read about the band. I was sure I wanted the band until I saw so many revisions and complications during my six months of research.

I eat nuts, I don't need meat to be slathered in sauce or gravy and for the most part I eat like a totally normal person.

I avoid the foods I do because there are other options available that don't come with the risk of some form of discomfort, that's all.

You can't count on having NO food intolerances and you can't count on having them, either. Unfortunately, there is no real way to know what's going to happen to you until after surgery. Let us know how your appointment goes on Friday and what your ultimate decision is. I can tell you that I'd rather avoid tortillas for the rest of my life and be so effortlessly maintaining my goal weight than to be where I was two years ago. The boards are FULL of people like me, and there are only a handful of people that are more than a year out with a persistent food intolerance.

Best of luck,

~Cheri

I was sleeved 5/7/12, I used to be a huge popcorn eater. Please tell me that day will come again. Ok, maybe not a huge eater but to be able to enjoy it again would be great. Lol...can you eat popcorn at all after being sleeved?

You'll do just fine! No worries - really! It's a big choice and it will definitely change your life, but for the better.

Yes, popcorn is something I never cared much for preop but LOVE now. Watch it, though, because it slides. And I do think a lot of folks avoid it for at least a few months while healing. But yes, popcorn can be in your future if you'd like it to be. :)

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
