You are NOT a loser! Sounds like you had a low blood sugar crash. Call your doctor and tell them what happened! You can do this! DId you go from a morning shake all the way to 2pm without anything else but Water? That would definitely cause a sugar crash. The pre-op diet is low carb, and will get all the sugar cravings out of your body by day 3, if you can make it till them, you will be fine! HANG IN THERE!!!

Thank you sophie. YES Accourding to my diet list I can only drink 2 Protein Shakes during the day and a chicken or egg salad for dinner! I am type 2 diabetic, I have never felt all the things i felt today. It makes since that by not eating my sugar just drop.

You only drank one shake between the time you woke up and 3:30pm??? You need to have a second one around noon. 100 calories isn't going to last you until late afternoon.

I would contact your surgeon and make sure they know you're diabetic and ask if they can modify your pre-op diet.

I'd like to second this.

The first time I went through pre-op dieting, my surgeon's office and NUT didn't realize I was diabetic, and I felt TERRIBLE.

After the third day, I called them in tears and explained that I just wasn't cut out for surgery if I couldn't handle this. After listening to my symptoms, the doc switched me to a more balanced Protein Shake and let me have an extra one a day, and it made all the difference.

Give your doc a call, be honest, see what they say. Good luck!

My pre-op diet allowed me to eat all of the veggies I wanted, which I love. I don't know how that would impact someone with diabetes, but veggies won't interfere with shrinking your liver.

It sounds like even though you didn't stick to the pre-op diet you were given, you made very smart choices when you got the sub, added lots of veggies and didn't eat the bread.

The pre-op diet shouldn't make you sick. I second what others have said and make sure the diet they gave you works for diabetics too.

I agree with everyone else that you need to have more than 1 shake by 3 in the afternoon. Ask your doctor or nut for a written meal plan for the pre-op diet so that you can make better choices to keep your blood sugar levels in check.

BTW, EVERYONE here is a big loser, so welcome to the club! :) You're going to do fine. The pre-op diet is absolutely the toughest part of this whole process and you WILL make it! :)

If you are still taking diabetic meds and reduced your calorie intake by about 1/2 you probably need to talk to primary Dr. about adjusting meds for lower calorie intake. Don't feel bad about little set back sounds like Doctor dropped the ball on this one. Good luck!!

Hi Smilen, I also suffer (or should I say suffered ) from Type 2 diabetes. It def sounds like low sugar to me. Speak to your DR, mine required a 5 day very low calorie diet early on in the process where they force the body to go into ketosis. All I was allowed was 9oz (3 morning 3 lunch and 3 dinner) of lean meat and two cups of chicken broth per day. At the end of the 5th day they measure your ketone levels to see if you follow instructions and confirm you can control yourself prior to surgery approval. I barely made it to the 5th day and I had a long talk with my DR. She immediately understood and for my 2 week pre op diet gave me a much more inclusive low fat low calorie but Protein rich menu. Diabetes isn't something they take lightly, they will make adjustments.

On the bright side, hang in there, I am 10 days post op and completely off my medicine since surgery date. My sugar levels have been steady in the 80s :) good luck!

I don't know why hey are still doing that pre op diet, it is the old way of doing things, makes the patient to weak to go into surgery.

Most doctors only require liquid diet the whole day prior.

You had a bad start, make tomorrow count. Wake up with the thoughts of why you decided to do this and push forward. I agree with the rest of the posters, sounds like a drop in sugar..contact your doc and I'm sure he'll have them set up a meal plan that meets your needs. Good luck!

They do it because many morbidly obese people have a fatty liver which means the liver can be "brittle" when being lifted up out of the way and it can begin massively bleeding. The pre op diet can shrink the fatty portions by up to a third and make bleeding and liver complications far less likely.

So explained our bariatric nurse.

Because of my insurance, I was granted a "surprise " sleeve. Meaning I had less than two weeks on get on board with the diet. No fun blow out binges or my beloved tequila. I don't have diabetes, so I can't speak for the diabetes (althought I did have some really crappy feelings of low sugar crashes, I think) but I can speak about the feeling of despair and wanting to quit. It's very hard, I had my cheats in there, like we all prob did, but you can and will do it. You have your reasons for the surgery and always keep in the front of your mind , not the back. For me, I looked at my 3 year old son every freaking day and thought about how I HAD to be around for him, I want to be that mom that says "eff it, I'm going on that Water slide, eff it , I'm going on that roller coaster". I don't want to be a sideline mom. My son deserves better. So, that's my reason for making it through. Maybe others can share theirs? Strength in numbers kinda deal. Oh, and I want to ride a horse and not feel bad for the horse. ; )

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
