I Can't Do This I Need Support

Recommended Posts

They do it because many morbidly obese people have a fatty liver which means the liver can be "brittle" when being lifted up out of the way and it can begin massively bleeding. The pre op diet can shrink the fatty portions by up to a third and make bleeding and liver complications far less likely.

So explained our bariatric nurse.

Very interesting about the liver. I think that explains something for me. My doc had me do no pre op except no Water past mid night. I have a fatty liver and after surgery my right side was extremely bruised and swollen. It's still some what swollen. I asked about it because it puts me quite lop sided. He said it was from a contusion and my liver was so enlarged he took a biopsy. So maybe I had so much bleeding swelling and bruising due to the lack of pre op dieting. Hmmmmm. Though I did watch carefully what I ate pre op. just thinking things through. And by the way. I'm very impressed by the caring, supportive, and thoughtfulness of everyone who posts. Nobody knows anyone yet everyone is so helpful. :). Thanks

You definitely need to have a serious talk with your primary care Dr and/or a nutritionist who works with Diabetics. Before pre-op I was on Glyburide and Metformin as well as humalog and lantus and byetta. They completely stopped the glyburide when I went on pre-op and put me on a sliding scale on my insulin so that I hardly took any during my pre-op diet.

If your primary care Dr doesn't know, it would be a good idea to have a serious conversation with them. Even if your insurance isn't paying for it your Dr should be involved with your diabetes management.

Take care and do not worry, you will make it. I would also suggest sugar free Jello and pudding during pre-op diet. They are sugar and fat free and won't interfere with the shrinking of your liver.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
