Me too.before you choose one of them check out Mexico surgery solutions dot com. Out of all of the coordinators I've talked to he has been the best. Ugh. I've got to get this weight off and I know how you feel.

I had a revision on 5/4/12. I used Dr. Hector Perez in Cancun. I felt my medical care was exceptional and the accomodations were beyond beautiful. Looking back I wouldn't have choosen anyone else, he was quite wonderful. Also, I live in South Florida so it is easy to get to Cancun.

Is there that much of a price difference if you go out of the country?

Oh yeah. The price difference is super crazy! And they have been doing the sleeve longer and have more experience than USA surgeons

This question comes up a LOT, and I can tell you that you MUST read and read and read, and then read some more... to make your decision. I found myself frustrated at the Medical Tourism aspect (i.e. the coordinators, etc) and the "high sales" tactic - and that turned me off. I kept reading about Dr. Kelly in TJ, Mexico, and finally just called. Talking to him on the phone, talking to his facilitator Omar, etc etc. is what made me make my decision.

I also considered Dr. Aceves, who has a terrific reputation and Dr. Alvarez. They both charge a little more but it is still very reasonable. All of them... Kelly, Aceves, Alvarez, Garcia, etc. have good reputations. In the end I chose Dr. Kelly because of personal referral - not because of a coordinator, not because of price - but because of the former patients that I've met through here, from all over the U.S. and Canada - who have had wonderful experiences with the surgery, with recovery and with their weight loss success.

I DID research a couple of places here in the U.S. Yes there are some very good ones, also. The ones nearest to me were over $20K and one of them did it as an outpatient procedure. Once I learned that my insurance will cover nothing, not even a complication, then I started looking at Mexico. The doctors are VERY experienced there as this is a "booming business" for them, to some degree. The VSG technique has been done in Mexico since about 2004-2005, whereas it was approved in the U.S. in 2008. That is why some of the Mexican doctors simply have more experience with it.

So read about the doctors here (there is a Surgeons button at the top with reviews) and CALL them.

Dr. Kelly's info: you can call Omar at 619-395-5347 and he will get you all the information you need for Dr. Kelly.

I'm not pushing you in any one direction. Most people here have had great experiences with their Mexican doctors. So you have to decide! :)

Good luck! I am scheduled with Dr. Kelly on June 14th.

Argh I always forget to mention dr. Ponce de leon - several people have used him, too, and have been very happy...

There is also a Dr. Joya in Puerto Vallarta (I think?) who has had good reviews, but I know nothing else about him.

I used Dr. Leino in DR. My experience was great from the ride they sent me at the airport till the day they took me around while I was waiting 2 leave. Everything was great! I found him thru global medical services and I intend 2 go back next year 4 my tt and breast lift. I might even get a butt lift while I'm there.

I think there are several coordinator companies associated with Obesity Solutions International. We went thru Ready 4 a Change and most of the paperwork said Obesity Solutions. Even the goodie bag from the Hospital MI Doctor has Obesity Solutions International on it. Our coordinator was alma and she was great. I think it's a way to get more exposure for the doctors to be listed with several WLS coordinators.

All this being said, we loved Alma, Dr. Garcia and the staff at Hospital MI Doctor in TJ and would choose them all again. We had a fantastic experience there and felt safe and in good hands. We paid $5,000 for my daughters VSG surgery package.

Thanks everyone....It just seems so overwhelming. I get good and bad reviews regarding all the doctors in Mexico and so it is hard to make a decision.

I'm with u. Alma is so awesome. I've even talked to Samuel and I haven't even settled on a date yet but I had some questions for him. It was actually pretty funny. I can tell he has a sense of humor and he was so helpful. My fiancé and I had our "sit-down", and decided on Dr Garcia. It was between him and mexicosurgerysolutions, which offers you so much more, but it just wasn't in our budget. I'd stalked this forum for months before I'd joined and also did my research and am using Garcia.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
