Attention ! Australian Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Welcome home and I hope you enjoy getting back into a routine. Our food is better in Australia and the portion sizes aren't usually as big than the US.

Thanks Kelli :) You look amazing by the way..congratulations

Scotty, stick with it, you will be back to normal fod before you know it, tho I know it is hard to take being on such a restricted diet. Just remember not to push it too far, your body is healing.

Welcome Deb. Good luck for your surgery...we are all here to help, and between the lot of us, we have seen alot of what happens with this surgery...good, bad and indifferent.

I noticed a question about whether the gurgling goes away...i still get the gurgling sounds occasionally, often i can put it down to drinking too close to eatting but sometimes they start up on their own for no apparent reason, they can be so embarassing.

Puppyphat, wish i could say something to help, but i have not been able to throw up since the surgery, i dry reach and have som bile sometimes but actually throwing up. You are right to ask for help even demand it, tho at 3 months the stomach should be healed. Keep talking to your surgeon..i hope everything will sort itself out.

Lost 1.7kg since Thursday last week. Really struggling with not only nutrition' date=' but Water as well. Had to go to hospital last night as I couldn't stop dry retching, hadn't kept any fluids down since Monday and was very dehydrated. I really don't think the drs understood the urgency to make me stop vomiting. I know I'm nearly 3 months out, but surely that stress on the sleeve isn't good. I called the surgeon yesterday, before it got that bad and asked about pain killers. He said I could take what I like so long as it wasn't anti inflamitory. I still have some Endone left from surgery and am considering taking that.

Has anybody had this before, pre or post sleeve? No1 can tell me how long it will last. The drs keep saying I could have symptoms for up to 6 months. I'm 66.1kg now, in 6 months, I'll be close to 25kg.[/quote']

I feel really sorry for you. Is this all part of the glandular fever or have you picked up a stomach bug - there are a lot going around at my husbands work. Did they put you on a drip? Maybe that is something you need - a friend of mine was put on a drip because she was dehydrated and suffering from exhaustion - maybe you need to put your foot down and demand it but I am sure you are getting medical advise. Thinking of you.

Yeah, all part of the glandular fever. Really wanted a drip but was just too tired to fight. Ended up going home after the Maxalon shot as at least that helped with the nausea.

My new little niece in Melbourne who is only 4 months old has been in hospital for the past 2 weeks with an unexpected heart condition. She is being operated on tomorrow morning. Puts everything into perspective. We will be glad when the operation is over and she starts putting on weight again. She's almost back to her birth weight. Poor little darling.

Sending prayers kelli. My daughter was in intensive care for a week when she was 6 weeks old with whooping cough. No surgery required, but I had her baptized there and then because no one could tell me if she was going to be ok. She is now a very bright and active 6 year old who is none the worse for it. Very very scary at the time, but I hope your niece gets the treatment she needs, recovers and goes on being a happy, healthy little girl very quickly.

I am sure she has LOTS of angels watching over her and I am sure she will be gurgling and cooing like every other 4 month old very soon.

My thoughts are with you today.

Sending lots of healing energy to you and your niece and to all of your family.

Hi all,

I have had a better week this week. I have been able to eat a little more and drinking is no longer a problem. I am getting to know a little better what it is that my stomach is trying to tell me and I am trying hard to listen although the signals still get crossed a little. I am going on to soft foods from Monday (yay) and am really looking forward to it. I am hoping to get back to work in another week so being on soft/normal foods by that point will make it a lot easier.

I am finding that I am getting a little energy back which is great as I've been quite worried about that. I have actually been getting out pretty much every day this week to do something which I've appreciated.

I've lost another two kilo's since last week which is good and means that the weight loss is finally slowing down a little. I have now lost a little over 34 kg in total. I am pretty happy about the amount of weight lost and can't believe that I will be in the 120's for Christmas. I can't remember how long it has been since I was in that range but it's at least 5 years. If not longer. So that is the exciting part.

With the food, I guess I am still struggling a bit in terms of quantity but figure that given where I've been, it's not too bad.

I don't seem to struggle with Cereal or potato etc. I feel better when I eat more Protein rich foods and am concentrating on that as much as I can. I guess the lesson I am learning is to CHEW and CHEW and CHEW - I don't think I really chewed my food before. So that has been a learning curve too. So many of them :)

I am going out to afternoon tea with family tomorrow and am hoping to try a little soft fruit. A grape or cherry (ok, maybe a few)...my dietician seemed okay with trying things telling me to just back off if it doesn't sit well. It will be good to try something fresh though and not pureed :)

Hoping this finds all of you well! Cheers, Lila

Thank you everyone for your well wishes. Unfortunately after waiting outside theatre for 2 hours early this morning the surgery was postponed. There had been a car accident emergency and another child needed the ICU my niece was supposed to be in post op. They are now back on the ward waiting again. It won't happen now until at least Monday. Poor little angle. We just want the problem fixed so she can start to put on weight and recover.

It was a very scary month that she was sick for and I felt like everybody thought that it was my fault because she hadn't been vaccinated, but she was only 6 weeks and the vaccine wasn't due until 8 weeks. But she is completely fine now. No one would every know about it except when at school they asked her what church she was baptized in and she said the children's hospital. They sat her down and explained that baptism happens in a church, she retorted that she was baptized in a hospital when she was 6 weeks old, and nothing more was ever said about it.

Every day I feel like I must have hit the hump, and tomorrow I will start to feel better, but each day I just feel more and more tired and sore. Have now lost 3.3kg since last Thursday when the symptoms started. Any other time, 3kgs in a week would be AMAZING but I'm not doing it the right way. I'm sleeping 16hrs plus a day and haven't eaten all week. I'm doing my best to get in 500ml of Fluid each day. Spoke to my NUT and she said forget about nutrition, go back to healing. Make sure I get the liquids, then when I feel better, don't be afraid of carbs because even though I'm not doing anything, my body is working like crazy fighting this thing. Just eat anything I can tolerate, if that's 7/11 slurpies then that's fine.

Hi all, just wanted to say I have my date for July 5th 2013! Quite excited!

I'll be on 6 week pre-op Optifast with optional salad/optibars, then two-three days nil by mouth post op, after barium swallow i can try Clear Liquids a week, liquids two weeks, puréed/soft two weeks, solids after that! Plus it's no smoking at least 8 weeks pre-op.

Rather strict but I'm confident it can be achieved with willpower and family support.

The stress of final semester uni is getting me very down but when it's over I hope to have a good holidays and start a fresh 2013!

Hi all! Beth

Your NUT is spot on. Get some Vitamin Water which is flavoured and dont worry too much about food, rest if your body is telling you that you need it. Sending you healing vibes.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
