My Post Op Diet Seems Less Strict Than Most Others

I had surgery March 21, just over a week ago. I was only on Clear liquids till I left the hospital Friday, once I was home I was allowed to switch to puréed food already. Was any one else allowed to start purees so soon? Also had no special per op diet got to eat regular food up untill 8pm the night before surgery.

I was sleeved the same day as you were and my doc wants me to do clear liquids and protein shakes until April 19th (Basically 4 weeks out)

That really is crazy the difference, I'm allowed to so to solid foods at 5weeks.

No consistency in the medical community at all re: pre and post-op diets. It keeps everybody confused, that's for sure.

I was allowed to eat regular food until midnight. I came to the hospital on the 14th and they were serving me regular meals. I had surgery on the 15th and then I went home on the 16th. I could eat puréed food if I wanted to. In the hospital they also served me puréed food (day after surgery) but I was just trying to focus on fluids. I also didn't have a preop diet. I had surgery at a Center of Excellence so I'm not worried. Also if you look up the Cornell Diet for VSG I think it's similar.

Kaiser Fremont had me on full liquids (that means yogurt, cottage cheese, strained creamed Soups, Protein drink with soy milk or regular milk, plus clear fluids like broth, Jello, and Popsicles) from the day after surgery till my two week post-op.

Then it was cooked veggies/fruits and soft meats (except beef) till my week 6 appt. After that, I was cleared for beef, raw veggies, and raw fruits.

Yep, the eating plans are all over the place. My pre-op was vegetarian, very low fat for two weeks, then full liquids for five weeks post op. I've had no problems though, so I'm okay with it.

I too had no preop diet. I am going in in the morning for surgery, and they said clear fluids one week and then full fluids one week. We'll see.

Amanda 3.0- Who is your surgeon? That pre op sounds way better then what I am facing. I wouldn't be so worried if I was able to pick and choose my protein powder but I am forced to spend $250 on 2 weeks of what he sells. Have not tried it yet

I have an Atkins like pre-op diet for one week prior to surgery. Then I have clear liquids for 7 days and then pureed liquids for the next 7 and then mushies for the following seven. I am glad you aske this question because I have been wondering the same thing about all of the variations.

First week preop, I will be on clear liquids. Second week, full liquids, and third week, pureed food. Then I will move to mushies and finally start adding solid food as tolerated.

Hmmmm... is Dr. Kim your surgeon? I think I heard that about him regarding the Protein Powder.

My surgeon is Dr. Cribbins of Plano, and it has been a great experience. My surgery was at Presbyterian Plano, which was a great hospital experience. Very hotel-like and accommodating for my husband, who stayed with me the whole time. I highly recommend!

I see you are in Granbury. My family and I love to visit the Brazos Drive-In when we can! We were out there just last month.

Your signature in your post, about being in pictures: That is my goal too. I can totally relate!

I was full liquid for a couple of days post op then puréed adding solid foods each day and cleared for anything except carbonation and alcohol at 5 weeks.

My surgeons office sells food too. They have a medical weight loss program in his office. I freaked out because I thought I would have to spent a lot $$$ on food. I only purchased a little bit and I stuck to 2 Protein shakes (Atkins, Pure Protein) a day and lean meat and veggies for dinner for my two week pre-op.

This clear liquid post op is running me ragged because I have at least 3 more weeks of Jello, broth, SF popsicles and Water (usually with the drink packets) to go! I just want to eat something!!

only preop for me was the day before clear liquids when doing bowel prep.

Post-op Protein shakes and water 2 weeks

Week 3 Thinned out mashed potatoes, soups, etc

Week 4-5 can add ground beef, dark meat chicken, fish

3 months raw veggies, raw fish

Yes. Dr. Kim is my surgeon... I am in my 6 month supervised diet phase and would consider changing surgeons just based on the pre op diet thing. There are very few protein powders I can stand and he is adamant that you use optifast or bari-essentials. I would MUCH rather eat lots of fruits and veggies! I would enjoy it way more and it would probly NOT cost me $200 for the 2 weeks!! I may call them on Monday. THANKS!!!!
