Different Kind Of Full

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that since I was sleeved, I don't get the same full feeling when I eat. Instead of feeling full in my stomach like I did pre-sleeve, I know get the full feeling more in my chest.

Does anyone else feel the same?

Yes, all the way up to my throat. I'm hoping with time, this will change. I have Gerd so it could be for that reason.

That's how it feels now. You'll get used to how it feels one bite before total fullness. It took me a while to realize I should be eating until I wasn't feeling hunger, not until I felt full--it's a subtle difference, but it makes a serious difference in how I feel after eating.

It's part of the "new normal" that is life with the sleeve. :-)

I don't think I ever felt "full" before the sleeve, so I didn't have to adjust to feeling a new full. I had to adjust to feeling full at all. Oh, I got that OMG feeling when I'd eat Tgiving or Christmas dinner before, but now I know I cannot aim for that. Like MeginNoLA, I look for the absence of hunger rather than full. I still eyeball or measure my food (depends on if I'm out or at home when I eat) to figure out what I should eat. Once I've eaten my portion, not matter what is still on the plate, then I'm done. If I get to where I can feel the food, I've eaten too much.

It's kind of hard to gage when to stop eating when I'm "not hungry" because I am NEVER hungry. I eat because I have to so I just make sure I have only 4 oz at a time.

Yes this is typical. I get that feeling too. Mine has changed over time though, it's not that crazy hurt in my esophagus feeling anymore. I actually feel real full again, just super fast. It took a lot to get me there pre sleeve! I think it was around one year out I began to notice my "full" was like my old full.

That is the best approach so early out, measuring your portions. Your nerve endings have been cut and you will be a bit numb in your stomach. It would be hard to tell if you are over stuffing your sleeve and that can be a bit dangerous. Keep doing it, your doing a great job.

Thank you so much! Good thing it doesn't hurt in my chest, I can just feel it. No issues, I was just curious to see if I was the only one.

I just had the most substantial food I've had so far- made myself some egg salad with two eggs, a little yogurt and mustard. it went down totally fine and I was thinking to myself that I might finish it but all of a sudden something clicked and I knew that was the last bite! I'm about two tablespoons shy of finishing so it probably was 1/3 cup.

I've talked to my counselor about this. I liked to eat before bc of the feeling I got after eating. (i didn't realize this until after my surgery when that feeling was gone) It's hard for me to explain, but it was a nice calming, warm, soothing feeling that told me I was full. I'm sure it was a hormone/chemical release that took place and now it's gone. I've not had that feeling in over a year. Sometimes it bothers me. My counselor told me I needed to find something that will give me that feeling. (replace it) I don't know that I will. I definitely was using food for self-medication. I still find myself trying to find something that gives me that feeling again food-wise. It's lessened over time, but not completely gone yet. I hope that it will go away completely.

I feel that throaty full as well. And the old hunger feeling, like the hunger pangs now happen when I am digesting my food. At first I thought it was hunger because that's what hungry used to feel like. But, I figured out that its just digesting food. Its weird tho because it makes you think its time to eat...but you can't because you will be SICK!

tnttransplant, I can relate to what you said. I was the same way. I used to enjoy the full feeling too and still crave it. The feeling is lessening and I expect it to go away one day.....

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
