Drinking While Eating

Recommended Posts

I would have to agree on the 15/30 rule\ 15 minutes wait once you have drank 30 minute wait once you have eaten When I break the rules the misery ensues: SLIME! ACID REFLUX!, VOMITING! NOT PLEASANT AT ALL

Well, I must be the odd one out here.

I have always drank Water w/ all my meals, My Dr. said it was fine as long as I got in my Protein. (I would get full faster, which was not a bad thing in my opinion) but I did get in all my daily required pritein. Sever months ago, this same question came up, so when I went to my DR. for my next check up, I asked again because I wanted to be sure I wasent doing something wrong. He still said it was fine do drink w/ meals as long as i was getting in the pritein.

so, as far as i'm concerned, it worked for me, i made goal in 6 months 10 days, lost 70 lbs doing it this way.

But, please do as your Dr. instructed, every Dr. has a different style and opinion on what is best for us.

I drink when I eat. I do drink less, but I like taking small sips when eating.

If I am eating at a restaurant, I order Water because I don't drink enough to bother ordering an entire drink. I don't get sick (and never have).

What I don't get when talking about this is how Protein shakes fit in. If drinking makes the food go through fast, and we don't feel full than how do we feel full when we drink an all liquid meal? If this were true, we wouldn't feel full after drinking Protein Shakes.

You don't really want the food to slide - it will possibly build bad habits later when your stomach can hold a bit more. It also rushes the food through your stomach so it doesn't have enough time to absorb all of the nutrients or keep that full feeling longer. My doctor said no liquids 30 min before and after, my nurse told me no liquids 15 min before and 30 min after and a liberal NUT I spoke to said liquids up to 5 min before is okay, but still no liquids 30 min after. Personally, I've experimented with all of them. From my experience, no liquids 15 min before and 30 min after seems best - for fullness, meal satisfaction and social ease. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's a habit worth building into your routine.

Part of the no drinking thing is you are washing the nutrients down faster and they arent getting absorbed into your body. It is a hard rule to get used to but worth it We can only eat a little bit of food it is worth it to just not drink so your body is soaking up all it needs. Dont want to get malnutrition.

I don't think it's so much about nutrients sliding through...is it?? Dont the nutrients get absorbed in the intestines?

I think it's more about the liquids letting foods slide thru faster, so you don't feel full long enough??

Alot of nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. The reason for not drinking fluids with the meal is so that the food isn't flushed down to the small intestine where your stomach isn't giving a full signal, therefore, we eat more. That could add to increased weight gain or no weight loss at all. ;)

My doc says no drinking 30 minutes before, during the 30 minutes you are eating, and none 30 minutes after. When I was first sleeved it made it kinda hard to get enough liquids in. Now that I am 6 months out I can drink quite a lot, and I do. Iced tea all day long!

I too was told 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after. I understand the reason but it is very hard for me to get used to also. I want a drink right after I am done eating! But I don't! Will it always be like that or will that change several months out?

You cannot drink until at least 30 min - 1 hour after eating a solid meal. It's just the way it is and it is for life. This is definitely something your surgeon or program should have gone over with you.

EDIT: I just saw what doctor you went to.....so yeah. Sorry.

Please don't speak in absolutes as if this is for everyone. As noted, there are some of us that have been quite successful and do drink with our meals and have not had any issues. Speaking for myself, sipping small drinks is all I can manage, but I DO drink before, during and after and do not have issues. I also have not experienced any stretching of my stomach because I am taking very small bites, and chewing well.

My surgeon didn't have any issues with drinking with meals as long as I was getting in my Protein first, small bites and chewing well.

Here are some facts:

You no longer have a normal stomach. It has been elongated into a sleeve that ends in a small pouch. It changes how your body needs you to treat it and food.

There are alot of sleevers that are not doing what the should, but doing what they can or "this works for me" - and yet it probably isn't working as well as they think it is. You can do alot of damage and not realize it for quite awhile.

One of the basic rules for not drinking before or after is that Water is pushed forward and created more gastric fluxuations and ripples when introduced with food. You can push undigested food out of your stomach into your intestines before it is ready. It was not such an issue when you had a full stomach and had a place for the food to digest as the Water and liquids created by digestion passed.

You probabaly can have a small amount of water - sipped in small amounts and anticipated with small bites - but only if the sip is incorporated into the bite, to moisten your bite as you chew it.

no one can give a definite answer to this question because no one is observing exactly what is going on with each individual person. There are volumous textbooks dedicated to the function of the digestive system, and our doctors are not that type of specialist, they are surgeons so their approvals of things are often slipsided and sometimes misinformed.

One thing I plan on doing as I go into eating again is sticking to the mantra "protien first" and incorporating papaya extract into my meal for the evening. It has compounds that are very good for digestion - I give it to my flemish giant rabbits, too!

If this is directed at my post, then post some published studies that state drinking while eating causes damage to the stomach, stretching, etc. Your post comes across as rather high and mighty without anything to back it up. As I said, my surgeon doesn't believe drinking sips with eating causes any problems and he has been around a long time doing this.

Inless you get an Xray who really knows what it is doing to your new little tummy, if it has stretched or not? How do you know FOR SURE if you are getting all the Vitamins and nutrients we need from the little bit of food we eat inless you get blood work and all your levels are good? Just because it works for someone doesnt mean you should be doing it. It just seems 9 out of 10 docs are saying DONT DRINK, so im not going to chance it, its such a small thing its not worth it.

My surgeon instructed the 30/30 rule for life. He said it was to keep my sleeve from stretching. I'm 10 weeks out and thus far, it's working. I'm sure that later I may be a bit more free about this. But for now, it's working. Blessings2u--BJ

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
