Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm actually from so-cal, but my husband is stationed here at fort lewis, so I had my sleeve done on the 26th at Madigan with Dr. Kjorstad. Surgery went pretty well, I'm just dealing with some post op nausea still. Ugh.. Anyways hope everyone is doing well!!

I just had my sleeve done at Madigan. How did you feel about your experience at Madigan?

My start weight was 280 lbs and am down a few not sure how many. I have a scale issue so I have to limit myself to bi weekly weigh ins. My husband is also having the surgery. He has many health issues and this will be life changing for him. We are really excited. Would love to hear about your experience PNWJoyce.

I had my surgery at Puget Sound Surgical Center with Dr. Crouthamel. The staff there has been phenomenal and Dr. Crouthamel has been extremely communicative both pre-post surgery. I am so glad I did this. I am self-pay and my cost was approximately $16k.

My surgeon is Dr. Michaelson at Northwest Weight Loss in Everett, as well. I'm planning to do the deed in late spring/early summer at this point, although I'm wrapping up most of the pre-surgery requirements this month. Just need to deal with the financial side of it.

How long did you have to stay post surgery, if you don't mind my asking? And do you attend the support group meetings? I'm thinking about starting to attend, but haven't quite made my mind up to do so.

Hi,

I am still messing around with this subject. I have almost given up.

I still haven't been able to have surgery.

The bad economy hit us hard and our insurance will not pay, ( Its the ROTTEN "R" Insurance) so I haven't been able to have surgery.

I just recently seen an ad for Franciscan Hospital in Federal Way. I thought I seen their price listed for the sleeve and it was great. But when I went back to find it

It was gone.

Has anyone went there for surgery and how it went would be nice to hear about.

Thank you

Searching...........Still Searching :)

Hi,

I went to two differant seminars and submitted my insurance information.

I contacted one of the surgery centers an additional time to see if there was anything I could do and if they would help me with my insurance problem. I even contacted my insurance broker and she submitted additional information to the surgery center for me. It almost started a war!

The surgery center insulted my broker. My broker said it was her responsibility to submit information on my behalf as it would have been an errors of ommission if she hadn't. The surgery center representive was mad the broker that she did that.

I understand it does cost the Doctors office money and time to mess around with insurances when they are certain in the long run they won't pay.

But I wouldn't go to that clinic now due to the viciousness that occurred. It was crazy!

I called the insurance commissioners office twice to find out how to get covered. The first time I was told that I would need the doctor to submitt a request for me and if I was denied then I would need to protest it.

Their isn't a doctor that is going to do that.

The second time I was told that the insurance company I have wouldn't cover it and very few insurance companies in our state would. The company would have to be self insured. Also, Federal employees were covered in this state.

I think it depends on the state you are in and what the state requires the insurance companies to cover.

I don't know I am lost when it comes to the insurance coverage. Also I am frustrated with all the run around.

If anyone could tell me what to do about it I would appreciate it.

Being over weight is unhealthy and one would think the insurance company would save money if they helped their clients with their weight problems.

I have been lead to believe that the insurance company wasn't going to pay as they think that the consumer isn't going to stay with them that long so they can't recoup there money back.

I have tryed to find another insurance company that we could go to and purchase insurance that would cover WLS but I haven't been able to find that out. We pay out over $ 800.00 per month in premiums and their is three of us in our group.

I could go on and on as I am really disappointed in our coverage. I just have to keep learning so I may understand how to over come the insurance obstacle.

I don't have the money at this time to pay for it myself. If something went wrong I would really be in trouble as my insurance company won't cover that either.

So my hope at this time is a better economy!

Sincerily,

Searching

I had mine with Dr. McMahon at Swedish in Seattle. I couldn't be happier with the experience and the outcome so far.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
