African American Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I've been lurking and lurking.. Well I want to know. I was all up for RNY until I went to the seminar, I switched to the sleeve and I'm thinking that's the best decision no rerouting of intestines less complications etc. But he never mentioned GERD!! I do not have any acid reflux whatsoever, but I don't want to deal with that it's making me want to back out altogether. But I've never wanted something this bad in my life I'm 26 years old, I want to enjoy the rest of my twenties slimmer I've been fat my whole entire life.. I'm tired! Does every experience gerd with the sleeve? I'm not getting and don't want rny ...

I was sleeved on 6/1/17 & other than the gas monster after surgery I have been pain free with zero indigestion. I was truly afraid pre surgery but now I'm 6 weeks out and I feel like a million bucks[emoji6]

Hello everyone , I am AA women living in Midwest . I'm having my sergury at NW w Dr Nagle.
I met with the ANP today and found out the process takes 6 months and I will only loss 60% of my weight which is 60lbs .Yup ????I was hoping for at least 80 -100 lbs she said with diet and exercise I can lose more weight.
I'm 54yrs old weigh 260 lbs I have Hypothyroidism , Back pain. But to go though all of this and only get down to 200lbs , I don't know , it's seems like it's not worth it. I m not going to give up. So am going to try and lose a little weight before my sergury , I have 5 month so hopefully I can lose 10-15lbs . lbs. I am very unhappy with my body I carry most of weight in my breast , stomach and arms .
I wont be discourage .
Take care .

Hello All! Im new this site. Im a 62 yr old AA california women. My surgery is scheduled for Nov. 1, 2017. My current weight is 211. My goal weight is to get no smaller than 160-150 range, otherwise I would look sickly. I noticed this site has been around since 2011 with over 450 comments. Due time Im not able to read most of the comments. However, im happy to read the issues we face as an AA culture that others may not have dell with! I too am not looking forward to loosing my hair. Its long but is thin & i wear it mostlr natural. I have to tame the gray hair around my edges by using a little relaxer but otherwise im natural. I guess that comes with old age![emoji4] I have 1 daughter who was sleeved 2 months ago & she said her hair is getting thicker! But she has worn her hair short & natural since b4 her surgery. But my younger Sister had her sleeve done 8 months ago & has experienced lost hair. Its just now starting to grow back but she has come to love the short hair look! Im not sure if I or my husband ( of 43 yrs) would want me to wear my hair short after surgery! [emoji53]
Im looking forward to reading more experiences on this AA site hopefully some from Cali as well! Bye, Bye for now![emoji113]

@niseys4

Everyone obsesses over the Hair loss but it is really such a small part of this. The weight loss opens so many doors and you feel so much better, the hair does not matter.

So glad i found this discussion forum. After the 3 month process, I received insurance approval yesterday. Waiting to get my surgery date. Excited and nervous but looking forward to continuing the journey toward a healthier (and smaller) me. [emoji4]

I love wearing wigs. It has opened a whole new world to me. I keep my hair braided and I can workout be active whatever. And then when I am dressed I wear wigs. I have several and it makes like easy and getting dressed fun. I'm not sure I will ever stop wearing them.

I don't know if there's a more current thread for AA sleevers/bypassers but I figured I'd say hello.

I am Day 3 of my pre-op diet. Surgery Day May 15th. I grew up on specific types of food so i'm looking for support and even more bariatric friendly versions of AA Soul Food.

Hey all!

I just found this thread. Thanks for starting it.

I had gastric bypass surgery on April 8th.

I loved reading through and hearing about everyone's success.

I am just at the start of my journey but things have been going well.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
