Okay, that was actually meant to be a smiley face...LOL :D

Lisalisa,

I don't think I've seen the 150s since I was 16, that's awesome ;) Glad to hear you haven't had a lot of nausea. How did you do while you were in the hospital?

Haha. Cute. The SSF kaiser staff are amazing. They tookcare of me so well. First few hours I had morphine for pain. Told them no more. Made me so nauseous. I used a pillow to press on my tummy when I walked. Not gonna lie, first day I hated. Just pain and coming out of the anesthesia. Other then that, once past that day, it wasn't as bad. No regrets.

When did the thread move? I kept looking for it in General Sleeve Surgery Discussion but I had to look up someone's profile and find the thread from there... Now I know where to find it again!

I use to have a hard time finding he thread too but now I just go the search bar and type in Kaiser Richmond. Then I scroll threw the couple of pages until I find Kaiser Richmond/Kaiser South San Francisco Sleeve Brothers and Sisters!

Hi Lisa,

I have been following you from day one. You are someone who was close to my weight so I've watched your progress. You are doing great. Keep up the good work. I pray that I am just as successful as you.

Hi Lee,

I have been watching your progress for over 2009.....I recognize you from the lap band talk. I have been on this journey since April 2009. I was strongly considering the band because back when I first started Kaiser wasnt offering the sleeve to everyone. But through my struggles since 2009 I have seen the hard time people were having with band. Reading the posting on lap band talk and also talking to people who had this procedure changed my mind. THANK GOD FOR MY STRUGGLES because I would have been banded by now. Lee, you are such a inspiration. Your hours of dedication working out has paid off and you are sooooooooooooooo close to goal that you can taste it.:P Stay encouraged and when I am sleeved I hope to be just like u.:D

Congratulations and good luck to all of you with upcoming surgery dates. I bet you'll agree with us post-ops that it's the best thing we ever did for ourselves. My only regret is that my doctor took so long to recommend it to me!

I've met some great people on my journey who I think will be life long friends. Find people who live close to you and establish mini-support groups if you can so that you'll have that voice of reason should you ever start to get off track. I keep in the forefront of my mind that 1 in 3 people gain their weight back so I build in all the support that I can get. Along with my Kaiser support groups, I go to other support groups as well. I also have WLS friends who I walk with, take yoga with and also pilates. Along with all of this I go to Weight Watchers once a week and have promised myself that I will always continue. While I have weighed at home everyday since surgery on February 17th, 2010, I know that if I ever got off track I might want to go into denial and not weigh myself. Going to WW makes sure that I can't do that. I've enlisted a very close friend to go with me so that it's another buddy system that I've built into my life.

Good luck team!! :)

Thanks babysista. Makes me feel good. I was depressed because I wasn't losing pounds. Moral: take your measurements before surgery. You will be thrilled when the scale doesn't move that the inches will.

OK everyone with surgery coming up.... How long did you get off work? Dr Alami is giving me 3 1/2 weeks off work. My boss loved to hear that, but it makes me super nervous. It just doesn't sound like enough time. I thought 6 weeks was pretty standard and know people who took 8 weeks. 17 days till surgery for me!

Babysista- I feel the same way as you... I'm glad Dr Fisher refused to do my surgery for so long, I might have been stuck with a band! Of course, I'm also glad I switched to SSF because Dr Alami rocks!

Hi Sing,

3 weeks seems to be standard, but a few people I've talked with have taken much less time. My friend took 3 weeks then went back to work part time for one more week. She was mostly tired and having issues with stomach acid so she needed some additional time. Another friend only took a week, which I thought was incredibly short, but she was completely fine afterwards. I'm hopeful that I won't need to take the full three weeks, but we shall see :) I have my surgery this coming Monday and will post back how I'm feeling...I hope to be home by Wednesday :) You'll have to post back about your surgery as well. I would love to hear about it! We are definitely in this boat together :) Good luck!!

Thanks! I'll be thinking about you Monday!

I'm having my gallbladder out at the same time, so I thought it might get me a little more time off work, but no such luck!

Time off work. Here's what my process looked like.

These are consecutive days during the first few weeks. Take into account that I work a desk job.

Wednesday - Surgery

Thursday - Go Home

Sunday - walk on treadmill for 20 minutes, drink 64 oz fluids

Monday - last day off work

Tuesday - Friday - Work from home for 4 hours a day. I was tired during that week.

Monday - Tuesday - Work six hour in the office. So ready when it was time to go home!

Wednesday - Friday - Work eight hours in the office.

I wanted to be in bed by 8pm each of those days. I'm not a napper so I'd get up early and be awake until bedtime.

Lee, you hardly took any time off at all. That's great, and I hope I won't need as much time either. I really don't want to suck up all my sick leave if I don't have to. Thanks for your summary, it's helpful :D

It's different for all of us. I have a good friend who was tired for what seemed like forever. Thankfully she didn't have to go into a job for work so could really honor her process. We each have our own path. The main thing that I learned in the early days was not to compare myself to other people. Everyone lost so much faster than I did and it drove me nuts when I thought I should be just like them. We all have so many factors: Where we started from, age (I'm 60), physical condition when starting (I was already a walker), male or female (I'm female). Men shed those pounds so much faster than us women!!

Just know that you'll eventually get exactly where you want to go.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
