Will I be a "slow" loser?

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for a sleeve on 1/27 ... just 3 weeks away. I've heard so many amazing weight loss stories and I am very psyched.

But then, I start reading about people who plateau after just a few weeks - going weeks without losing anything. I said my goal was 10 pounds per month, but now I'm afraid I won't make that. :)

My head knows it's all about losing weight and getting healthier, but my heart wants to be THIN. Any advice for someone freaking herself out? PLEASE?!?!?!?!?

you know we all have bad neighborhoods in our head and hearts and we get stuck there from time to time and the whys and what if starts to haunts. i'm 4 moths out and i still every now and then doubt my sleeve (even at 84 pounds down lol) and it because my heart and head is not in synce and then "patience and time" comes along (i'm trying to learn this myself) and it all comes togather you are going to do great! this board helps as well really nice ladies on here just think in a couple weeks you are going to be sleeve and then before you know the end of summer comes and all the endless possibilites. we will do it! good luck sweetie!

xoxo,

nikki

I am worried too, my surgery is a week away. I keep hearing about the people with the lower BMI's lose less, which makes sense. What is a lower BMI? I thought our BMI's all had to be pretty high for this surgery.

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement ryansgirl.

JeepChick - I don't know your height, but our weight numbers look almost identical. Good luck with your surgery. We'll have to keep check on our progress together.

My BMI was 44, not really low, but not as high as some.

I lost 50 lbs since 19 october.

I have not had a stall at all. As soon as I even think I might be having a stall, I up my excersize. Even going for a 30 minute walk after dinner helps!

But really, dont worry, you WILL lose. And, sure, we want to lose fast, but really, as long as you lose, and keep losing, be happy!

You just to have to remember that most everyone hits a stall. But, they don't last forever, and you will be able to lose weight.

None of us got fat overnight, none of us will get thin over night. This is an endurance race and definitely not a sprint.

I have to remind myself that the BMI chart is not the end all, be all to calculate my success. My starting BMI was 47, and today it's 27. Technically, I'm still overweight by the charts. But, I'm at goal, and my surgeon set my goal weight with many factors in mind.

Such as because I had been fat for so many years, my bone are more dense than naturally thin person my height. I'm technically a "big boned" female. He used these tools to measure certain joints, and I had a bone scan in the past that was evaluated by a radiologist.

So, remember that you may hit a stall, but the pounds will melt off as long as you follow the program, drink plenty of fluids, work out to build muscle and burn fat.

I am scheduled for surgery 1/26, the same week as you, and I know what you mean. I think I'm still not convinced that I am going to lose weight from the surgery. I think our brains are so conditioned to believe we will never lose all the weight, it sounds too good to be true. "I'll believe it when I see it" is what my brain is telling me...I think if I lose the weight I won't recognize my own body!

mb20mom - I was required to have a physchology visit prior to my surgery. I told her while I heard all the information about not being hungry and having to remind myself to eat, but just couldn't quite believe it. She just smiled and said "you'll see soon enough what I mean". (Yes, she has WLS 9 years ago & is down 140 pounds and maintaining. WOW!)

While, I want it to come off fast (who doesn't really want that) ... I think I will be fine with slow and steady. But reading about 4+week plateaus with the sleeve is very depressing. I guess it really is "I'll believe it when I see it".

Here comes momma Erykah, honey you have all your life to lose your weight, you'll have your sleeve and won't be able to stuff food into your tummy anymore, you're going to have to lose weight. . . so remember you'll

lose and then your weight needs time to catch up and your body needs a break, you know sorta like you do. . . you work all week, then weekend comes and you need that break. . . don't stress out over stalls. . . stalls are just weekends for your body to take a break from it all. . . . stalls are good. . . you're going to do good. . . Rome wasn't built in a day either :drool5:

I was sort of reluctant to really tell anyone at work. Of course all my close friends and family knew about my decision to get the sleeve. I was mainly reluctant because I was afraid I too might fail at this - just like I failed at WW, Jenny Craig, The Zone, Ediets - I could go on and on! I am only ONE week out, and I know I will have issues, stalls, etc..., but at this initial stage what I can say is my reality now is NOT that I think I won't lose, but that will lose too much. Really. Today was the first day I moved to full liquids, and I could not eat more than 1/2 cup of Soup. That's it. I know the sleeve is just a tool, and if I pigged out on icecream.... I could sabbotage it. But this is the first time in a LONG time, I think I might actually be successful. I might not be on a diet in 2011. It will change the way you eat, without question.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
