LapBand Before Having Kids/Pregnancy

I'm 26, and getting banded July 26th. I went and visited my ObGyn for a check up and she was not very welcoming to the news about my LapBand decision. She doesn't agree since I haven't had kids yet. Anyone out there who LapBand before having children?

Also, how was the pregnancy with the LapBand? Any complications? Pain? Etc.

My doctor made me really nervous today about my decision and I wanted to get other peoples opinions!

Thank you!

I have 2 kids, an 11 yr old & 2 yr old boys. I was banded 5/28/13. I plan on trieing to get pregnant next fall, approx 18 mos post surgery. My dr said that though they would like me to wait 2 yrs, I should be fine. The biggest concern is getting maximum weight loss before getting pregnant

I am 24 and getting the LapBand. No kids. But I plan on having them! As pinky punk said they want you to wait at least 2 years. I am sure there are complications with the lapband and pregnancy but I KNOW there are complications with being obese and pregnant.

Sorry not getting - I HAVE a lapband :)

I had my band a year after my daughter was born and Thats was my concern too as well cause I was considering the sleeve at the time and my doctor said the band would be better considering my age and wanting more babies my obgyn too didn't want for me to have the band either suggested some medication with a healthy diet most doctors Dont want you to have the band Im not exactly sure why but Thats the second doctor telling me that my band doctor did say I wouldn't have any problems with my band but I have heard that once u unfill from Ur band completely that it isn't as tight as before not sure how true that is hope this helps god bless ;-)

i was banded back in january of 2011. just had my first in june of 2013. he was eight pounds six ounces, 20 inches long. i had half of the restriction removed so i could eat more for nutrition for the baby and so i didn't get stuck. the only complication i had was gestational diabetes and that wasn't associated with the band at all. i had the band so i'd lose weight and have a healthy pregnancy and baby, which i did. it was my fertility doctor who told me to get the surgery so reduce the risks of miscarriage.

I got my band in Jan 2011 and am currently 24w pregnant with my first. Surgeon asked me to wait at least 18 months before trying to get pregnant, which I did. Have had no fluid removed so still somewhere between 6-7cc's in the band. I've noticed my appetite has diminished these past few weeks, almost like it was when I first got the band, so I suspect my growing belly might be affecting things a bit. Otherwise my only concern/complain is that my port is beginning to protrude horribly and feels like it's trying to flip when I lie down, though this was a problem before I got pregnant due to weight loss. I've only gained about 5lbs, and my OB is well aware of the band and has no problems or concerns about it. ETA: Oh, and I'll be 32 next month.

My doc said no prob with the band... Don't even need to unfi it unless you have a lot of morning sickness....

I had my baby two months ago and I have had the band for 9 years this year...I did have to have an unfill due to not being able to eat anything at all. My doctor was very supportive with me and knew I had the band..I did however gain a lot of weight with pregnancy and am now trying to start the motativation of getting that off again being that we want a second child. My band doctor keeps telling me that I should only gain 15lbs while pregnant and that was hard to due with the appetite I had. The band doesn't effect your pregnancy if it wasn't for the weightloss with the band I wouldn't have my miracle baby now!

yeah i was told 15 lbs only as well. i gained 30ish :/

I'm in luck my surgeon (lapband)has a twin bro who is ob gyn so the twin will delivery my baby.. I'm happy about that... I got unfil when I found out I was prego only because I was in green zone and was rarely eating... I wanted to make sure my baby gets enough food... I feel better about it as well... I was fainting fatigue and morning sickness so I def had to get unfil.. Of corse I didn't know I was prego I though I was just hot because its summer... I'm happy about it sorry if rambling baby about to knock me out lol... No comp as of now.. No weight gain either with unfil yet

I'm 29, banded almost a year and a half ago. I'm down 90lbs. We don't have any kids yet, but are planning to. My OB/GYN thought it was the best thing ever when she found out. That's part of the reason I got banded--to have a healthier pregnancy and be active with future kids. The doc said most of the time she forgets her patients have a band until she feels the port! She said most people do not need an unfill unless they are vomiting or having trouble eating enough calories. She said you only need 300 extra calories a day for a healthy baby.

Thank you all for your responses. It is much more reassuring I'm doing the right thing after hearing your stories. I just know my ObGyn looked at me like I was crazy when I told her. She thinks at 26 and a BMI of 32...that I should continue to try to lose weight without having the LapBand, especially since I have no kids yet. It is very comforting reading all your successes with the band and pregnancy.

Thank you!

This is why its very hard to ask a specialty doctor their opinion on something that isn't in their field. While your ob/gyne does specialize in fertility/pregnancy/child birth etc they do not have much more then a simple idea of a different type of surgery/specialty like WLS. To be completely honest (and this could be the hormones talking LOL) but I really don't think it was your gynes place to give you her personal opinion, especially if she has not seen what success people can have with a WLS (or babies born with moms who had WLS). I am on band baby #2 and my ob/gyne was THRILLED when I walked into her office a few years ago, much thinner, and exclaimed I was pregnant again. (I had two children prior to my WLS as well). When I went to see her 7 months ago she said that I still looked fantastic (asked me how things were going) and was very happy to see that I was happy to be having another baby. She assures me every month I'm doing a great job on handling my weight/blood pressure, etc and is always very positive. I have only gained about 14lbs this time (I say only because I gained 52lbs with my last, and lost all but 15lbs) but she assures me that I got the weight off once and she knows I'll do it again. A lot of times your surgeon will want you to wait 18-24 months because that's usually the time frame it takes to get the weight off and maintain. A healthy mama will make beautiful healthy babies. Do what feels right for you, and congrats on taking this exciting step!
